Wednesday Oct 3, 2012 Hello Everyone, Let's begin with our Leadership Award Recipients for the month of September - For those not familiar with our student recognition program, here is how it goes. Students are guided in their behaviour by three pillars: Safety, Respect, & Responsibility. We all have posters in our rooms that explain what these look like at school. Each week, there is a focus for the week on three areas and students are reminded during morning announcements about the focus for the week. Each month, teachers select 3 students from their class (one for each pillar) and one student who has demonstrated exceptional leadership throughout the month. Students may be selected for meeting class goals or expectations or for meeting some personal goals that they have been working on. We then celebrate these accomplishments at an assembly and invite parents to join us if they are able. The students' photos are hung in the front hall and the names of recipients go home in the newsletter. We are trying to get away from the traditional newsletter so we will post the names in the Wednesday Envelope instead. Here are September's recipients listed in the following order: Mrs Mininni Kind, Mrs Reid Morning Kind, Mrs Reid Afternoon K, Mrs Simpson, Mrs Sandig, Mrs Davy, Mrs Murphy, Ms Ludlow, Mrs. Del Villano, Mrs. Clubb-Miculis/Mrs Mininni. (I believe I have already exceeded my exclamation point quota for this email)

Speaking of email, a paper notice was sent home tonight asking about email. It has come to my attention that there are some who are not receiving emails from the school and should be. It may also be that you

are getting email but would like to add another email to our distribution (say Aunt or grandpa). Please fill

out the form only if there is a change. If you are reading this and are happy with the delivery, please ignore the communication.

Our QSP Magazine Fundraiser is off to an excellent start and we want to continue the momentum. Our

organizers have extended the deadline until Friday Oct 12. You can bring in orders any time up until that time. This fundraiser supports enrichment activities for our students such as the Q-Mack presentation or

Scientists in the School.

Attached you will find a package of articles from the Board and a draft of School Council Minutes from the

September 26th meeting.

2. School Report: A. Principal’s Report: Mike Bartalos EQAO – The school’s results are in and Lorne Park Grade 3s did a great job on the Provincial Assessment last spring. In Reading, 87% of students achieved Level 3 or 4 (66% in the Board). In Writing, 94% of students achieved Level 3 or 4 (76% in the Board). In Mathematics, 87% of students achieved Level 3 or 4 (67% in the Board). Comparing to past years is not a great measure given that the students are all

different and the number of students at Lorne Park means that there can be large fluctuations from year to year. Having said that, we did go up in Writing and stayed the same in Math and Reading. There was some interesting attitudinal data around math that we looked at as well. School Success Planning – Teachers spent time on the PD days looking at various forms of data available to us including EQAO, CCAT and Report Card data. It is interesting to note the alignment in our report card data with our EQAO results. We are planning some school wide goals in both the Teaching and Learning area and School Climate area. In T & L, we will continue our focus on writing and especially boys and writing. Our bigger focus in Teaching in and Learning will shift a bit to Mathematics. Teachers began with some Professional Development last Spring and continued in the same vein on September 14. Our School Climate committee began laying out their plans for the year as well and will be focusing on Bullying Prevention. Our kickoff was an outstanding assembly with Q-Mack and J-Box and we thank you for sponsoring that. We also re-committed to the Power of One pledge that we all signed last year and is hanging in the hall. We are required to conduct a Climate survey every 2 years, so we will do so I will continue to communicate about all things school success as it is our raison d’etre. Re-Organization – Thank you for your patience and understanding at this difficult time of year. We ended up moving 28 students in grades 1 through 5 in order to better balance our classes and to meet the Ministry Primary Class Size requirements. Students seem to be adjusting well and credit goes to you as their parents for speaking to them positively about the changes. Thanks also to their teachers who are sensitive to the difficulty of adjusting to new people and expectations and took the time to welcome them with open arms. Leading the Way – We are looking forward to another great day with a variety of activities for students that connect with the community. Anniversary and Stream of Dreams – Stream of Dreams is the “fish on the fence” program you may have seen at other schools. We have committed to this program in April and we will need to begin the process of finding funding, materials and volunteers. It is quite volunteer intensive but I think it would help to involve a different group of volunteers than the traditional. Immunization – This is an annual process conducted by Peel Public Health to make sure that all school children have their immunizations and records up to date. First reminder letters were mailed yesterday by Peel Health and families have until early January 2013 to get things in order. The school has a very limited role in the process other than acting as a delivery vehicle for communication home. All inquiries should be made to Peel Public Health 905 799-7700 Consultation Process – As required by the Ministry of Education, before a principal or vice-principal is placed at a school, the school council will be consulted to determine the qualities they would like to see in the leader. The Peel Board will consult with school councils on an ongoing basis to make sure we are prepared if there is a principal or vice-principal change at a school. Superintendents of education and the local trustee will hold ongoing consultations with councils to determine the qualities the council would like to see in a principal. The consultations will be used to develop and maintain lists of qualities councils would like to see in their principals and vice-principals. Every school will have its own list. It is important for you to know that these consultations will happen at every school across the system on an ongoing, cyclical basis, regardless of whether there is a planned change in leadership at that location. I will inform you ahead of time when a consultation is happening at our school. Open House – We are looking forward to seeing those who can join us for our open house tomorrow from 2:25 – 3:30. If you are able, join us for recess outside at 2:25. No need to sign in at the office. B. Teacher’s Report: No Teacher’s Report 3. Chair Report: Jill Rawlin

Friday Oct 5, 2012

Hello Everyone,

A small Friday message today. Thank you to all who contributed to Leading the Way on Thursday! We

took a huge trunkful of food over to the Compass today and Mrs Scott and Mrs Nobbs stuffed their cars

to the top with donations to the Open Door (clothing and school supplies etc). Both places were extremely grateful for the support and expressed a greater need than ever. We had many who helped

out with various groups as they explored their connection to the community and we are grateful for the support.

The gentleman from the Compass who spoke to the students was very inspirational and as such we have

decided to continue to support them on a regular basis. Mrs. Davy's group met with me at recess and we

made some plans to collect specific items on a weekly basis. Look for more information soon as plans are developed but know that we will likely target a particular food item each week and track and record how

much we bring in as a school.

Our QSP magazine fundraiser has been extended until Friday Oct 12. Thanks for your support!!

Our Courtesy Riders have received their bus passes and may begin riding the bus on Tuesday. Info was sent home today with each student who applied to be a Courtesy Rider.

Enjoy a lovely Thanksgiving weekend with loved ones - we have so much for which to be thankful.

Wednesday October 10

Hello Everyone,

A small envelope today. We sent home a sticker to remind everyone that our final push for the QSP fundraiser is happening this week. Send in those last orders by Friday.

We also sent home a paper copy of a request that went home last week for which we got a small

response. All Star Reading is a very important reading program for those students who need a boost to strengthen their skills. Without regular (one hour per week) volunteers, the program cannot survive.

Please consider lending a hand to a very rewarding volunteer opportunity. Thanks.

As I mentioned last week, we will begin collecting for the Compass Food Bank on a weekly basis starting

Monday. Next week's desperately needed item is: Nut Free School Snacks Beginning next week, please bring these in and place them in the bin by the Lost and Found. Thank you for your support!

We are in need of a volunteer to do Kiss and Ride on Tuesday mornings from 8:45 to 9:00. It requires just 15 minutes of your time, helping kids get out of their cars safely when parents drop them off in the

morning. It is a fun and rewarding job to do, but very important and the parents and school staff really appreciate it. If you would like to help us out, please contact Jill Rawlin at [email protected].

Friday October 12

Attached you will find a newsletter from fundraising co-chairs Leslie Gould and Andrea Nobbs.

It gives you a good overview of how the school benefits from their fine efforts. It also gives you a heads up of upcoming initiatives such as the Craft Show and the Penny Drive.

Volunteer Information Night - Wednesday October 24th @ 6:30 in the Library.

We will share information about some of the things that you might choose to get involved in. Some of the

opportunities are at school during school hours, some are at the school in the evening or weekend and some might be things that can be done at home.

You will also get a chance to meet members of School Council and learn about how to use an Epipen. It

is important for all volunteers who work with children to be aware of some of the school's emergency procedures especially for children with severe allergies. Please respond to this email if you will be able to

join us. There will be reminders in future envelopes and you can responde then as well.

Please keep sending in those Milk Bags and Sheridan Nurseries receipts!

As mentioned before, we will begin collecting on a regular basis for the Compass Food Bank. Next

week's food item is Nut Free Healthy School Snacks - Students will tally, record and display

Page 6: Leadership Award Recipients for the month of Septemberschools.peelschools.org/1257/Documents/Oct. 2012 School-Home E… · Mrs. Del Villano, Mrs. Clubb-Miculis/Mrs Mininni. Leadership

the number of items we collect each week and, here is one of those opportunities we mentioned above -

we will need parents to help deliver the collected items on a regular basis.

And finally, as per Lorne Park tradition we will have our annual halloween parade after lunch on Oct 31.

Please plan to join us if you can. Look for more information to come soon.

Wednesday October 17

Hello Everyone:

Welcome to mid-October and the weather challenges that this brings. It is important that students have both indoor and outdoor shoes as the field can be somewhat messy at this time of year. A wise person

once said, "there is no bad weather, just bad clothing." Please know that students spend an hour a day outside and need to be prepared for this. We even head out in the drizzle to get fresh air. My drizzle test

is my glasses. If they are covered in 30 seconds or less, we stay in. Hopefully, we continue to get outside

this fall but please send yours prepared to be outside.

As you know, the Gifts 'n' Things Craft Show and Sale is taking place on

Saturday, November 17th. As part of the Silent Auction this year, we would like to

create Themed Gift Baskets with donations from each class. Be sure to check your child's backpack today or tomorrow for a flyer with further details. As always, we appreciate your help in all our

fundraising efforts.

Our annual Halloween Parade will take place on (ironically enough) Wednesday, October

31st @ about 1:15. Parents are welcome to enjoy the parade on the back hardtop. We will wind our way

through the school to show each other our costumes and then head outside through the back gym doors and around the back of the school. If the weather is poor, parents can enjoy the parade by lining the

walls of the gym and we will march, slither, limp, crawl, or fly past you there.

Morning Kindergartens will have their own time to parade in the school but may also join our afternoon parade if they wish to bring their parents or guardians. Don't forget your cameras!

Please remember a couple of things to help make the parade fun and safe for all. Try to keep the fake weaponry to a minimum (the temptation is very great to use it inappropriately!). Masks are not as safe as

makeup. Let's keep the gore to a minimum and save the best for the evening. We have very young ones

who may not understand some of what they are seeing. Thank you very much!

That might help you see the connection between your milk bags and the end result. I just watched a video online on how to cut a milk bag to make

it into one long strip for crocheting... Wow!

Volunteer Night - Please join us to learn more about Volunteering at LPPS on

Wednesday, October 24 at 6:30 in the gym. We will share information about some of the

things that you might choose to get involved in. Some of the opportunities are at school during school

hours, some are at the school in the evening or weekend and some might be things that can be done at

is important for all volunteers who work with children to be aware of some of the school's emergency procedures especially for children with severe allergies. Please respond to this email if you will be able to

join us Once again in the ironic department, we are looking for volunteers to offer childcare services on that

evening - do you know a high school students who might be interested in earning a couple of hours

toward their 40 hour obligation? Please let me know.

Our Compass Food Drive continues to be a success! This week we are collecting Nut Free Healthy School Snacks. We have brought in about 45 items to date. Every bit helps. Next week our

focus will be tuna and other tinned fish.

Thank you, as always for your support!

Friday October 19

Hello Everyone,

We continue to support many worthwhile causes as we teach our children the importance of helping

others. Please continue to support our endeavours in any way that you are able. More importantly, talk with your children about the various causes that we support and why it is important to help others.

As mentioned before, we will begin collecting on a regular basis for the Compass Food Bank. Next week's

food item is Tuna or other canned fish - This week we collected a total of 51 food items (thank

you very much!) and we hope to beat that next week!

Please keep sending in those Milk Bags. Hopefully the link below will work this time to learn more

about the milk bags. http://recyclemilkbags.pbworks.com/w/page/26969816/HomePage

Hello Grade 5 parents,

The link below will help you learn more about regional programs that are available to students in Peel. A

few of these programs begin in grade 6, some in grade 7 and others in grade 9. This will give an overview of the possibilities that you might consider for your children when they leave LPPS.

Wednesday October 24

Hello Everyone,

I got a chance to spend some "quality time" in classrooms this week. I was in Mrs. Simpson's grade 1

class where were building up our 'stamina' to read on our own for longer and longer periods of time.

Page 9: Leadership Award Recipients for the month of Septemberschools.peelschools.org/1257/Documents/Oct. 2012 School-Home E… · Mrs. Del Villano, Mrs. Clubb-Miculis/Mrs Mininni. Leadership

Many very engaged readers. I spent time watching students investigate pumpkins in Mrs. Murphy's class

with a parent volunteer working with each investigative group. Much excitement predicting sizes and quantities and whether or not it would float. I also got a preview of some Spooky Nursery rhymes

created and performed by the students in 5CM under Mrs. Clubb-Miculis. We are so fortunate to have such talented teachers at LPPS!

Mrs. Buckingham wanted you to know that we had some surplus money for the Foster Child left from

the end of last year thanks to your Spirit Day generosity. We used the $270 to stock a pharmacy for a

village and water for a family as part of the Gifts of Hope from Plan International Canada.

Attached is a detailed reminder to send in items for each class' Theme Basket for the Silent Auction at the Gifts & Things Craft Show and Sale. Don't forget to join us at the show on Saturday, November 17.

will be canned fruit if you happen to be shopping. Big thanks to Kayla, Sherri, Olivia and Taylor for helping out this week.

A smallish envelope tonight. I spent some time in Mrs DelVillano's class today. Students were writing

paragraphs about each other. One would present a few facts about themselves and the rest would write

a paragraph about what had been said. Then they would read back what they had written. Incredible learning and complete engagement. Of course, I got to take a turn as well and I heard what Kayla and

Igor had written about me and they were bang on and written with style and flair. A wonderful exercise!

Attached you will find an updated calendar that you might want to print. We apologize for

leaving off some key items - Gifts and Things Craft Show and Sale on November 17,

Michael Reist - a speaker for parents on Nov 28 (details to follow) and a list of food items for the Compass each week.

Thank you for all the wonderful food donations this week. We collected about 150 cans of tuna for the Compass! Next week we are focussed on Canned Fruit.

A reminder that you can continue to send in receipts from Sheridan Nurseries to the office as we will

get a credit for the school. Please keep them coming until the end of the year.

Pennies continue to flow in and we will give you an update next week as we strive to reach $500 as a

school to support providing Fresh Water for those without.

Put your hand up if you are tired and ready for the weekend. Have a great one! (you can put your hand down now)

Given the lovely weather we are experiencing, we thought it prudent to remind you our inclement

weather procedures as a school board. The following message came from the Board's communication department:

The board is closely monitoring weather conditions in Peel Region. Decisions related to inclement weather are typically made in the morning by 6:30 a.m.

Any school/bus cancellations or closures will be posted to www.peelschools.org, school websites (as

applicable), the board's Facebook account and Twitter (@PeelSchools). We aim to have information

posted by 6:45 a.m. This is the same process we follow in the winter months.

On a completely different note, just a reminder that tomorrow is picture retake day and class photo day. Your child will need to let their teacher know that they would like to have a retake done. A note to that

effect should be sent in. Thank you.

Finally, we will be collecting donations for UNICEF from students and at the KissnRide in the morning.

Please don't fret if you do not recognize any of "creatures" collecting. We actually do work at or for the school ;)

Happy Halloween Everyone!

This happens to be one of my favourite days of the year. It gives us license to open the vault of creativity

and be who (or what) we want to be. Enjoy the freedom!

I heard Matt Galloway on CBC this morning talking about sugar and the candy that comes with Halloween. The doctor he spoke to suggested that a great way to control the consumption of candy at

this time of year is to let kids choose what they will eat so that they have some of the control but the quantity can be controlled by the parents. For example, you might say that they can choose 2 treats for

after dinner and one to put in your lunch. This way the child feels like they have some control. This is

also a chance to remind everyone that treats that come to school should be nut-free.

Thank you for all who came to the parade this year. That was the biggest turnout since I have been here. Next year we hope to have better weather so that we can pose for class photos outside. And thank you

for your generous donations to UNICEF as we raised $156.40!

Gifts & Things Craft Show and Sale Please join us at the show on Saturday, November 17 from 10 - 4.

LPPS: Together 'We Create Change'! By taking part in Free the Children's largest penny drive, we hope to raise enough money as a school to provide 20 people with permanent access to clean water! (Goal: $500)

you happen to be shopping. Big thanks to Mia, Marley, Dawson and Maya for helping out this week.

We are still looking for volunteers to help out with the Book Fair on Thursday November 15. Any

time that you can help between 4 and 7:30 would be appreciated. Interview information will come home

this Friday.
