This has led to children suffering from diminutive growth due to water-borne diseases. In addition to deaths and economic loss, women and girls, on whom the burden of obtaining water falls, have to trek long distances and spend hours of their time fetching water – time that could be better spent with the family or on economic activities. Distressed by the suffering caused by water- borne diseases and the associated economic loss, Ashok Gadgil (Gadgil), an Indian born physicist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, sought to find a solution to the problem. And he came up with the innovative and breakthrough UV Waterworks (UVW) technology. According to some analysts, the installation of the community-centered Elephant Pumps improved the socio-economic life of the people in the rural villages in Africa. The pumps contributed to community development and created a positive impact on the livelihood of villagers in terms of gender equality, health, and time-savings. They felt that the pumps were innovative, cost effective, and could be maintained by the rural communities without any outside assistance. AbstractThis case study is about Pump Aid, anorganization that developed and installed alow-cost pump called the Elephant Pump totackle the problem of water scarcity in Africancountries. with the help of ultraviolet light. The resultwas safe and clean drinking water thatexceeded the World Health Organization’s(WHO) water standards and was sold to BoPconsumers. In 1996, Gadgil licensed the UVWtechnology to WHI, set up by Ghana-bornentrepreneur and Johnson & Johnson veteranTralance Addy (Addy).As the CEO of WHI, Addy played a crucialrole in refining the business model. WHI helpedarrange loans for communities to finance theinstallations of its water systems and thebeneficiaries had to pay a nominal user fee toavail of the service.The company also offered a franchise modelto entrepreneurs where they received a returnon investment within 12 to 18 months. Theproceeds were enough to cover the expenseof the UVW system, cost of installations, andmaintenance of the equipment. WHI wassuccessful in attracting commercial financingfor setting up its water systems.As of mid-2009, more than 600WaterHealthCenters (WHCs) had beeninstalled in many countries including India,the Philippines, and Ghana, providing safewater to more than one million people aroundthe world. WHI’s aim was to take the UVWtechnology and its water system to needycommunities throughout the world byestablishing a global presence. While expertsappreciated WHI’s efforts to provide potablesupply of water to underprivilegedcommunities in developing countries and feltthe business model was sustainable, theypointed out that certain aspects of its watersystems and business model needed to bechanged to make it more relevant to the targetsegment. Obtaining the capital to help morecommunities finance these water systems,so as to ultimately achieve significant scalerelative to the magnitude of the problem, wasanother challenge.

The award recognized Rosa'sefforts at providing rural families living in Brazilwith access to electricity.About 25 million people lacked access toelectricity in Brazil, most of them residing inrural areas as of late 2006. The adverse impactof lack of electricity resulted in high costs ofcultivation, lower farm yields, highexpenditure on non-renewable and hazardousenergy sources, and poor living conditions.Rosa founded a private organisation, Sistemasde Technologia Adequada Agroeletro (STA)in 1992 and worked towards his mission ofrural electrification. He decided to use solarenergy to provide electricity to rural familiesthrough STA.Rosa combined solar energy poweredelectrical fences with managed grazingtechnique that improved yields of cattlefarmers. He formed a non-profit organization,Instituto Para O Desenvolvimento De EnergiasAlternativas E Da Auto Sustentabilidade(IDEAAS), in 1997, for extending the benefitsof solar energy to low-income families.Rosa started two projects - the sun shines forall (TSSFA) and Quiron. TSSFA catered tothose families which could afford solar energyat market rates and Quiron catered to low-income families that could not afford solarenergy at market rates.Rosa developed solar home systems, aproduct that was leased at affordable rents toseveral rural families. Through Quiron, hedeveloped self-sustainable business modelsthat were to be adopted by low-incomefamilies to improve their income levels sothat they could afford solar energy at marketrates.Rosa faced challenge of scaling up hisbusiness to cover the whole of Brazil andexpand to other developing countries. Brazilgovernment's efforts to extend electricity gridto rural areas also posed a threat to Rosa'sbusiness model as his customers mightdiscontinue using his products once they wereprovided with access to grid. Consistent cashflows for minimum of four years were requiredfor his projects to breakeven.

AbstractThis case is about Vivek Kundra (Kundra)who was appointed as the first ever FederalCIO of the US in March 2009. Before thisassignment, Kundra had had a less than two-year reign as the CTO at District of Columbia(DC), but during this time, he had ushered ina new era of experimentation bydemocratizing data and providing an open,participatory government wherein citizenscould access government data and hold thegovernment accountable for its operations.The case discusses how Kundra overcamecertain challenges and fostered innovation inthe DC government. He incorporatedtechnology in all of the government's operationsin order to develop a user friendly e-government infrastructure and to providepublic safety and educational and economicgrowth opportunities for the citizens,businesses, and visitors in the district. Hedemocratized the government data to makethe operations of the government transparentto the public. He introduced several informationtechnology (IT) initiatives in the district so thatcitizens could access government serviceseasily. In doing so he made good use ofemerging media such as social media andother consumer technologies. Costs and timeframes for introducing services weredrastically reduced through the use of opensource technology and user-generatedapplications. For instance, in 2008, underKundra's leadership, a contest called "Appsfor Democracy" was introduced whereinsoftware developers used the open datatechnology to create useful applications forthe citizens of the district. He also put in placea stock market-like model for evaluating ITprojects that attracted the attention of analysts.Kundra's initiatives received recognition fromseveral quarters - both he and his office wona number of prestigious awards.
