This project involved designing a multicultural community center in the 19 arrondismont of Paris, France. The concept behind my design was to create a combined outdoor cinema/indoor black-box theater. Through the use of a simplified floor plan, and by using areas of visual connection between the two arts, a program developed which allows for a relationship between both forms of theater.

The site given for the project was located in an urban environment in the 19th arrondismont of Paris. The site at its highest point is +7 meters above grade, having been built up artificially and bordered by retaining walls. The site is also bordered by the petit centure, a rarely used train line that circles the city of Paris. Tunnels along the petit centure provide access to the site, however in their present state they are currently boarded up and u n u s e d .

In my design, I made access to the building possible by a staircase that begins at the vaults on grade (which I opened up to make usable). The staircase rises 7+ meters, and opens up to the entrance of the building. Also accessible from the vaults is ramp access to an elevator, which takes patrons from grade to the entrance. Pedestrian access is availiable from atop the petit centur, with patrons being able to walk directly onto the site.

The initial massing idea for the theater was to have a triangular geometry form the interior space, contrasted by the rectangular form of the privacy walls bounding the entrance.

In the final iteration of this project, the geometry of the theater was simplified to reflect the idea of having a “pure” black-box theater.

This project required the development of a programmatic scheme and building design for the YWCA of Charleston. In teams of two, we were to meet with the client and create a building that would accommodate their growing needs within the Charleston community. In the design presented, overlapping spaces and multiple levels create a program that works to engage social interaction from the street and into the building.

These diagrams show the connection available between street and building. Through the use of outside space and multiple levels, a relationship between the community and building is able to be established.

The interior program was formed after establishing that the organization needed program spaces that could be used for a variety of activities, essentially becoming multi-flex spaces. The YWCA also wanted one large space that they could use as a banquet hall, in addition to renting out the space when not in use.

This project was a design for an outdoor marketplace located in downtown Greenville. As Greenville is an emerging and lively city in terms of art and local culture, I wanted to design a structure that would be able to showcase local art and exhibits. The design was inspired by analyzing the positive/void relationship of the preexisting parking garage structure on the site, and working to incorporate that same relationship into my design as well.
