Les Enfants terriblesThe Terrible ChildrenFRA | 1949 | 105 mins | dir. Jean-Pierre Melville, with Nicole Stéphane, Edouard Dermithe, Renée Cosima | cert. 12 | in French with EN subs

Essence and myth lie in the heart of this story of a brother and young sister who retreat into their imaginery world of games and illusions never to be caught by reality. Melville has managed to maintain the poisonous and timeless charm of Cocteau’s novel.

Le DoulosFRA | 1962 | 108 mins | dir. Jean-Pierre Melville, with Jean-Paul Belmondo, Serge Reggiani, Michel Piccoli | cert. 12 | in French with EN subs | restored print

Appropriately, in a film devoted to the principle of duplicity, Melville teases the spectator by reproducing the police station from Mamoulian’s City Streets, while his Paris features American lamp-posts, call-boxes and subway entrances.
