Tribute to Jeanne Moreau

Les AmantsThe LoversFRA | 1958 | 90 mins | dir. Louis Malle, with Jeanne Moreau, Jean-Marc Bory, Alain Cuny cert. 15 | in French with EN subs

Jeanne Moreau plays a chic, high-society wife with money, a daughter, smart friends and a casual lover. Then one night, she makes passionate love with a young student she has only known for a few hours, and drops everything for a new life. A controversial study of bourgeois emptiness and sexual yearnings.

Sun 12 Nov 2pm

Followed by a discussion with Nick Walker (Rochester Kino Cinema Club)

La NotteFRA/ITA | 1960 | 122 mins | dir. Michelangelo Antonioni, with Marcello Mastroianni, Jeanne Moreau, Monica Vitti | cert. 12 | in French with EN subs

The second film in Antonioni’s ‘trilogy’, La Notte can be seen as his cool riposte to Fellini’s exuberant portrait of the decadent, idle rich in La Dolce Vita. Moving from a hectic Milan afternoon through an all-night debauch to a tentative dawn, the story centres on a successful novelist (Marcello Mastroianni), who is losing his desire to write, and his disaffected wife (Jeanne Moreau), who is losing her desire to desire. Winner of the Golden Bear at the 1961 Berlin International Film Festival.

Wed 22 Nov 6.30pmSun 26 Nov 4.10pm

Jules et JimJules and JimFRA | 1961 | 105 mins | dir. François Truffaut, with Jeanne Moreau, Oskar Werner, Henri Serre, Marie Dubois | cert. PG | in French with EN subs

Perhaps Truffaut’s most celebrated film, cited by Scorsese as a stylistic influence on Goodfellas, this offered Jeanne Moreau one of her most memorable roles as Catherine, a free spirit who captivates two close male friends in the early years of the 20th century. All three become involved in a triangular relationship that will change their lives forever.

Sun 26 Nov 2pm

Season continues in December

La Baie des AngesBay of AngelsFRA | 1963 | 90 mins | dir. Jacques Demy, with Jeanne Moreau, Claude Mann | cert. PGin French with EN subs

Demy’s second feature has a ravishing Jeanne Moreau, ash-blonde for the occasion and dressed all in white, as a compulsive gambler. Mainly shot inside the casinos in Nice and Monte-Carlo, it is conceived as a dazzling symphony in black and white.
