In Albert, the “Somme 1916” museum displayslife in the trenches at the time of the offensive on 1 July1916. Some fifteen alcoves and show-cases are set outalong a 230-metre underground passage which was usedas an air-raid shelter during the Second World War. L a Somme a été profondément touchée parles combats de la Première Guerre mon-diale : l’invasion d’août et la «course à la
mer» de septembre 1914, la bataille de la Sommede juillet à novembre 1916 et les batailles dePicardie de mars à septembre 1918.
Aujourd’hui, cette page mouvementée de l’histoi-re se découvre en suivant le Circuit du Souvenir,jalonné de mémoriaux souvent très impression-nants, de vestiges des combats et de cimetières. Les sites les plus importants vous sont présentés dans ce document maisl’Est du département fourmille de nombreux autres témoignages de cetteépoque.
The Somme sufferedseverely in the battles ofthe First World War : theinvasion and the “race tothe sea” in September1914, the Battle of theSomme in July-November1916 and the battles ofPicardy from March untilSeptember 1918. Today, this dramatic period of history can beexplored by following theCircuit of Remembrance,with its frequently veryimpressive memorials, tra-ces of battles and its ceme-teries.
The following descriptions present themost important sites of the Great War,but the eastern area of the departmentis full of other reminders of the period.

In Péronne, the Historial of the Great War is thecentral reference museum for the First World War. It offersa better understanding of the causes, consequences andevents of the war, daily life in the front line and behindthe lines - all the cultural, social and political features ofthis overwhelming war which shaped the twentieth cen-tury (+ 33 (0)3 22 83 14 18). A Froissy, le «P’tit train de laHaute-Somme», chemin de fer àvoie étroite, emprunte la ligne qui ser-vait à l’approvisionnement du front en1916. A Froissy, au départ, le Muséedes chemins de fer militaires etindustriels présente de nombreuxvéhicules utilisés pour alimenter lestranchées de la Bataille de la Somme etraconte l’histoire des petits trains à voieétroite de 1880 à nos jours (03 22 4455 40).Une promenade à bord du «p’tit train»est aussi l’occasion de découvrir lespaysages de la vallée de la Haute-Somme entre Froissy et Dompierre.
At Froissy, the “P’tit train de laHaute-Somme”, narrow gauge railway,runs on the line which carried supplies upto the front line in 1916. At Froissy, thedeparture point, the Museum of militaryand industrial railways displays a largenumber of vehicles used to provision thetrenches in the Battle of the Somme, anddescribes the use of small narrow-gaugerailways from 1880 until the present day(+ 33 (0)3 22 44 55 40).A trip on the “P’tit train” is also anopportunity to explore the landscape ofthe Valley of the Haute-Somme betweenFroissy and Dompierre.

Vestiges et mémoriaux jalonnentce vaste site : le monument à la 29e division, àlaquelle appartenait le Régiment de Terre-Neuve, lemonument à la 51e division des Highlands, la buttedu Caribou, insigne du Royal NewfoundlandRegiment, “l’Arbre du danger”… Un centre d’inter-prétation complète la visite : reconstitution d’un inté-rieur terre-neuvien, panneaux et bureau d’informa-tion, visites guidées en français et en anglais (03 2276 70 86).
At Beaumont-Hamel, the Newfoundland memo-rial offers a realistic and moving view of these battles inits remarkably well-preserved trenches system. This vastsite is full of surviving traces and memorials : the monu-ment to the 29th Division (to which the NewfoundlandRegiment belonged), the 51st Highland Division monument,the mound with the Royal Newfoundland Regiment’semblem figure of the Caribou, the “Danger Tree”, andothers. An Information Centre completes the visit (recons-truction of a Newfoundland interior, information panels,guided visits in French and English + 33 (0)3 22 76 70 86).

At Villers-Bretonneux, on 25 April 1918, theAustralians halted the German army. The NationalAustralian Memorial (the site each year of the comme-moration of Anzac day on the Saturday closest to25 April), the Franco-Australian museum (+ 33 (0)3 2296 80 79) and Adelaide cemetery are proof of thestrength of the links and mutual recognition betweenAustralia and France.In the small nearby village of Le Hamel, the Australiancorps memorial park has a memorial, traces of trenchesand a way-marked itinerary with information boards(information : Corbie Bocage 3 Vallées tourist office + 33(0)3 22 96 95 76).

A Thiepval, le Mémorial franco-britan-nique, à l’architecture impressionnante (45 mètres dehaut), est visible à des kilomètres à la ronde. Il portesur ses piliers l’inscription de 73 367 noms de soldatsmorts au front et qui n’ont pas de sépulturesconnues. Un centre d’accueil et d’interprétationouvrira ses portes en 2004. Il offrira différents services(bureau d’informations, visites guidées, boutique, etc)et surtout un vaste espace d’exposition qui fourniraaux visiteurs les clés nécessaires à la compréhensionde l’histoire de Thiepval au cours de la PremièreGuerre mondiale.A deux pas, la Tour d’Ulster est la réplique d’unetour située près de Belfast dans le camp d’entraîne-ment de la 36e division qui, le 1er juillet 1916, fut priseentre les tirs allemands et ceux de l’artillerie britan-nique (centre d’accueil : 03 22 74 81 11).

Its pillars bear the carved names of 73,367 men, the “Missing of the Somme” who died in thebattles of the Somme and who have no known grave. Thenew visitor centre, set to open in 2004. will offer a num-ber of different services, including an information desk,guided tours, a shop etc.; pride of place will go to a largeexhibition area which will provide visitors with the neces-sary keys to understanding the history of Thiepval duringthe First World War. Close by, the Ulster Tower is thereplica of a tower near the city of Belfast in the trainingcamp of the 36th Division. On 1 July 1916 the Division wascaught between artillery fire from the German and theBritish guns (visitor centre + 33 (0)3 22 74 81 11).

The village ofPozières remembers thefirst attacking engage-ment of the Australiantroops (memorials to the1st and 2nd AustralianDivisions). Remains of ablockhouse known as“Gibraltar” are still visi-ble. Pozières is also thesite of the Tanks monu-ment, with four small-scale model tanks at itscorners.

A La Boisselle,le «Lochnagar cra-ter», impressionnanttrou de mine, de100 mètres de diamètreet de 30 mètres de pro-fondeur, est un vestigede la série d’explosionsqui se déroula le1er juillet 1916. Ici, elleeut lieu à 7h28 mar-quant ainsi le déclen-chement de la Bataillede la Somme par lesBritanniques.
La Boisselle hasthe Lochnagar Crater,an impressive mine hole100 metres across and 30metres deep, the remai-ning mark of the series ofexplosions on 1 July 1916.Here, at 7.28 am, it mar-ked the launching of theBattle of the Somme bythe British troops.
In La Boisselleliegt der “LochnagarCrater”, ein beeindruc-kender Bombentrichtervon 100 MeternDurchmesser und30 Metern Tiefe. Er ist einÜberrest derExplosionsserie vom1. Juli 1916, die hier um7 Uhr 28 begann und denBeginn der Somme-Schlacht durch die Britenmarkierte.
