“Annotated Bibliography”
Picture Books:
Criteria for Excellence: When I look for picture books, I like them to have
really great pictures. The pictures should go along with the storyline of the
book because pictures are how children start to read. The pictures should be
fairly detailed or should at least get children to want to pick up the book and
read it.

Halloween and Chester (the cat) is trying to scare Howie (the puppy). Throughout
the story all the animals start to get scared. A witch comes in their house and talks

Furlough 1
ingredients to the witches’ brew so they try to escape, only to run into more
monsters, who turns out to be their owners.

other animals that gradually get larger continue to climb inside. Then a bear gets
in and sneezes which causes the animals to fall out.
-Noteworthy Traits: The pictures in this book are amazing. Jan Brett makes
wonderful illustrations. Throughout the book, the animals and the mitten are the
main focus of the pictures, however, in the borders of the pictures you can see the
boy looking for his mitten in the woods.
Poetry Books:
Criteria for Excellence: When I am looking for poetry books, I like to find
ones that children will enjoy. I think that they should be funny, catchy, and
there should be a variety of types of poems within the book. Poem books are
not ones children typically pick up and read themselves; people normally
read poems to children. That is why I think the poems should be interesting
for the children; they should to be hooked while they are hearing it.

relatable to children.
Nonfiction Books:
Criteria for Excellence: When I am picking nonfiction books, I try to find
ones with good pictures. Although nonfiction books are not normally used for
pictures, I think they add to whatever subject the book is about. Nonfiction
books should be a way to teach things without having to use a textbook.
Since children are reading these books for information on something, the
books should provided the information in an interesting way instead of just
facts on a page.

enough for students to understand. This would be a great book for a replacement

Children Novels:
Criteria for Excellence: When I am picking novels for children, I try to find
ones that the children can relate to in some way. I also try to find books that
are totally new or different to the children so they can learn and escape to a
