Community safety comes first: During the last eight months, two security measures have been put in place to enhance safety in Chinatown and members of the Liverpool Chinese Community. They are the upgrade of the Chinatown CCTV system and door alarms offered by the Merseyside Police. See Yep Chinese Association has been the key organisation to lead these two measures. In 2000 Liverpool Chinatown was the first Chinatown in the UK to install CCTV and use volunteers to manage the system. Over the years, the system has helped the Police to combat crime in the Nelson Street area. The system requires daily administration and this role has been carried out by two members of the LCBA. In 2009, See Yep Chinese Association (UK) led a CCTV system renovation project aiming to further enhance safety in Chinatown area. This project is funded by the Lord Mayor of Liverpool’s Charity Fund and the surplus from 2009 Chinese New Year celebrations; supported by all other long established Chinese associations and implemented by LCBA. The renovation work was completed last month and the system is now in full operation. Special thanks to 2008-2009 Liverpool Lord Mayor Councillor Steve Rotheram for his support to the project and donation from the Lord Mayor of Liverpool’s Charity Fund.

Since last October, Sergeant Amanda Hamilton from Merseyside Police has been working closely with the Chinese Community via See Yep Chinese Association (UK) to tackle burglary and robbery. One of the agreed solutions to address these problems is to enhance home security while residents are at home. Apart from offering crime prevention advice, investigation and support to victims, the Police also offered free door alarms to members of the Community. These door alarms work on the basis of static electricity. Hang them on the inside of the door and if someone touches the outside handle, the alarm is activated. The alarms were issued and distributed to members of the Community by See Yep Chinese Association and other Chinese organisations. Sergeant Amanda Hamilton and Constable Kevin Byrne are the Community key contacts, they can be contacted at St Anne Street Police Station on 0151 777 4016. Safety of the Community relies on co-operation between individuals, organisations, businesses and the police; it can only be achieved with your help.

Another year of success: Liverpool Chinese Community celebrates the Year of the Tiger The Liverpool Chinese Community celebrated the Year of the Tiger with thousands of people in Chinatown area on Sunday, 21st February 2010. The celebrations also marked the 10th anniversary of Liverpool’s twinning with Shanghai, less than three months before heading to the World Expo 2010. The 2010 Liverpool Chinatown Chinese New Year celebrations co-ordinating committee would like to thank everyone who helped the organisation of the events and your participation in the activities.
