MUSICAL NOTES

A warm welcome to the instrumentalists joining us this morning. Since 1990,Chatham Baroque has been delighting critics and audiences in Pittsburgh and across the country with their spirited performances of seventeenth- andeighteenth-century music. They have been Calvary’s ensemble-in-residence for ten years. And trumpeters Charles Lirette and Rick Murrell have adorned festive occasions here for many years, as well.

Dieterich Buxtehude (1637-1707) seems to have delighted in the particular combination of sounds represented by Chatham Baroque, for he composed awealth of sonatas specifically for violin, viola da gamba, and continuo. One ofhis only published volumes of music was a collection of sonatas for just theseforces, from which today’s Prelude comes. The piece is built as a set of 31 variations over a repeating bassline. The violin takes the lead initially, giving waybriefly to the gamba, and then sharing with it in elegant interplay between highand low solo lines.

The Offertory music pairs two choruses from the oratorios of Handel. “Let allthe angels of God” is one of the less-frequently-heard moments from Messiah,a brief but jubilant exhortation to the heavenly chorus adore the risen andascended Christ. The similarly joyous “Let their celestial concerts all unite” isanother appeal to the angelic host to adoration. It forms the conclusion ofSamson, an oratorio which Handel began composing in 1741, finishing Act One just days after completing his work on Messiah. (While much is oftenmade of the breakneck speed at which Handel composed Messiah, in a span of just over three weeks, Samson, a work of similarly imposing proportions, took him only a fortnight longer!)

The two angel-themed pieces at Communion are by the English composerRichard Dering (c. 1580-1630). Despite sharing a composer, they are rather different in their scoring: Factum est silentium is for six-voice choir, while Duo seraphim is set for only two voices. Dering, as a Roman Catholic, exiledhimself from Anglican England for most of his adult life, but returned in 1625 asorganist of the Catholic chapel of Queen Henrietta Maria, the wife of Charles I.

Next Sunday (October 6) at 5 p.m., the Choir sings Evensong, with music chiefly by Charles Wood. Evensong is the choral form of the daily office liturgyfor evening, with a rich tradition of musical elaboration across all the centuriessince the rite was created in the first English-language Book of Common Prayerin 1549. The service fuses word, prayer, and song in a uniquely Anglican way. A brief organ recital by Alan Lewis follows the service, and a reception ensues. Please join us!

The Neighborhood Youth Outreach ProgramNYOP, founded by St. Stephen’s, Wilkinsburg, has been a beacon of light for youth inWilkinsburg for nearly 20 years. We have provided a safe place for young people to be,an opportunity to learn about Christ’s love, and experiences that help the young peoplegrow in maturity and inner strength. In particular, we do that by giving the children theopportunity to explore the creative and performing arts. In addition to homework helpand a nutritious snack, the children participate in dance, music, singing, poetry writing, art projects, and film-making. We have an ongoing partnership with the CarnegieMuseum of Art and, this year, have a new partnership with the Neighborhood Academy.

As you probably are aware, we rely for most of our funding on the generosity of thediocese, diocesan churches and individual donors. This year we are a participating organization in the Pittsburgh Foundation’s Pittsburgh Gives Day of Giving on October 3, 2013. This is a tremendous opportunity for us to have any donations givento be matched at some level by the Pittsburgh philanthropic community. To donate, go to www.pittsburghgives.org

A Holy Ground

Action:

Keep Our

Crosswalk Safe

TODAY!Immediately following the 11 a.m. service

Parishioners and neighbors struggle to get across the street at Shady at Alder Street. Drivers do not seem to notice that there is a crosswalk, parkedcars make it hard to see pedestrians, some drivers are speeding, and the traf-fic flow is high. Calvary members and some of our neighbors are workingwith city officials to find solutions for making the crossing safer. The Calvary Episcopal Church Pennsylvania Interfaith Impact Network (PIIN) Team has reached out to Sacred Heart School and the DePaul Institute, and engaged Dan Gilman, Chief of Staff for City Council Representative Bill Peduto, to get action taken.

This is an effort to reach out beyond the doors of Calvary. As the formerArchbishop of Canterbury, William Temple once famously said, “The Churchis the only society that exists for the benefit of those who are not its mem-bers.” We all benefit, and multiply the grace of God, when we reach out inthese practical ways to our neighbors.

At the close of the 11 a.m. service on Sunday, September 29, the Feast of St. Michael and All Angels, our patronal festival, we will move to the lawn infront of the church for a Holy Ground Action: Keep Our Crosswalk Safe. Please join with our city officials and neighbors to recognize what has beenaccomplished, and commit to continued efforts.

The Feast of St. Michael and All AngelsSeptember 29, 2013

THE COLLECT OF THE DAY

Everlasting God, you have ordained and constituted in a wonderful orderthe ministries of angels and mortals: Mercifully grant that, as your holyangels always serve and worship you in heaven, so by your appointmentthey may help and defend us here on earth; through Jesus Christ ourLord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

A Reading from the Book of Genesis [28:10-17]

Jacob left Beer-sheba and went toward Haran. He came to a certain placeand stayed there for the night, because the sun had set. Taking one of thestones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place. And he dreamed that there was a ladder set up on the earth, the top of itreaching to heaven; and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. And the Lord stood beside him and said, “I am theLord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land onwhich you lie I will give to you and to your offspring; and your offspringshall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the westand to the east and to the north and to the south; and all the families ofthe earth shall be blessed in you and in your offspring. Know that I amwith you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back tothis land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promisedyou.” Then Jacob woke from his sleep and said, “Surely the Lord is inthis place – and I did not know it!” And he was afraid, and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God,and this is the gate of heaven.”

Psalm 103:19-22

19 The Lord has set his throne in heaven, *and his kingship has dominion over all.

20 Bless the Lord, you angels of his,you mighty ones who do his bidding, *and hearken to the voice of his word.

21 Bless the Lord, all you his hosts, *you ministers of his who do his will.

22 Bless the Lord, all you works of his,in all places of his dominion; *bless the Lord, O my soul.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

A Reading from the Revelation to John [12:7-12]

War broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels fought against the dragon. The dragon and his angels fought back, but they were defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. The great dragonwas thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the Devil andSatan, the deceiver of the whole world – he was thrown down to theearth, and his angels were thrown down with him. Then I heard a loudvoice in heaven, proclaiming, “Now have come the salvation and thepower and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Messiah, forthe accuser of our comrades has been thrown down, who accuses them dayand night before our God. But they have conquered him by the blood ofthe Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they did not cling tolife even in the face of death. Rejoice then, you heavens and those whodwell in them! But woe to the earth and the sea, for the devil has comedown to you with great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!”

Response before the Gospel: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

When Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, he said of him, “Here istruly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!” Nathanael asked him,“Where did you get to know me?” Jesus answered, “I saw you under thefig tree before Philip called you.” Nathanael replied, “Rabbi, you are theSon of God! You are the King of Israel!” Jesus answered, “Do you believebecause I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greaterthings than these.” And he said to him, “Very truly, I tell you, you willsee heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending uponthe Son of Man.”
