I can’t believe that it has already been two years since I wrote my first Presidents’ letter for the JCC programguide. Time has passed by quickly so apparently it is true that “time flies when you are having fun” as itdid during my tenure as JCC Board President. In this whirlwind, it’s really heartwarming to see that weactually completed the major goals laid out back in our strategic plan in 2010.

Highlights of what we set out to do and have accomplished:

Goal: Expanding secular programming to reach greater audiences.Accomplished: We, for the first time, now offer a wide range of general interest classes ranging from technology classes, dance, gardening and genealogy. We are excited to continue to expand class optionsand watch this program grow

Goal: Expanding Jewish programming to reach greater audiences.Accomplished: One years after the integration of Agency for Jewish Education, programs including Florence Melton Adult Mini-School, Distinguished Speaker Series, Coronado Lecture Series, NorthCounty Lecture Series, Teacher Development Program, Partners in Prevention, JServe, Yom Limmud: San Diego’s Community Day of Learning and March of the Living are thriving at their new home.

Goal: Expanding Outreach Programs in North CountyAccomplished: With the amazing support of the Leichtag Foundation, we have made huge strides inNorth County. We now offer significant programs in a wide variety of areas including Shalom Baby, Jewish Education, Film Festival, Performing Arts Series and Book Fair. In fact, this November, for thefirst time ever, Book Fair will have a permanent North County location at Temple Solel.

Goal: Continue the financial strength of our institution.Accomplished: We have just ended our fiscal year with a balanced budget for the 9th straight yearand our reserves have reached their highest level.

Goal: Making the JCC the best place to work for our staffAccomplished: We selected the firm Peter Baron Stark to conduct an employee satisfaction survey assessinghow we are doing and how we can improve. In recognition of our overall exceptionally favorable responserate and high scores (compared to hundreds of other organizations around the country), the JCC/CJCwas awarded a Workplace Excellence Award. But beyond this significant honor, we now are examiningthe limited areas of recommended improvement and are implementing new policies to get even better.

Goal: Maintain the JCC as a state of the art facility and create a gathering place for people to socialize and enjoy.Accomplished: Through the generosity of many, we raised over $769,000 on a new capital campaignwhich has allowed us to make this goal a reality. We are thrilled to have opened up The Bean, a 1,000square foot gathering space in front of the facility designed to relax, schmooze, enjoy coffee or smoothiesor catch a game on flat screen TVs. We also recently completed major improvements to the David &Dorothea Garfield Theatre thanks to a very generous legacy gift from Sheila and Hughes Potiker aswell as significant upgrades to the Jacobs Family Gymnasium, Albert A. Hutler Tennis Center andthe overall facility.

I feel privileged to have helped lead us through these accomplishments, but clearly they are not the resultof any one person, but rather the product of many individuals pulling together for common goals. We areso lucky to have incredibly dedicated lay leaders, staff and volunteers that make the JCC a very special place.

Finally, I want to pass the baton to Larry Katz as he will soon begin his period as Board President. Larry,a past volunteer of the year, has been on the JCC Executive Board for more than a decade. He is superblydedicated, analytical, enthusiastic and an overall great guy. He will surely do a wonderful job over thenext two years. Although I’m saying goodbye as JCC President, I look forward to continuing to be veryinvolved with the JCC and CJC as I will remain on their respective executive boards and look forward tocontinuing all the great work to help us take the “J” to new heights.

partners in preventionPartners and Prevention is a program whichpromotes self-acceptance, self-worth, spiritualvalues and family harmony through a Jewishlens as a way to prevent substance abuse andaddiction. Partners differs from other programsin that it does not focus on drug-education butrather the underlying stressors and pressuresthat lead today’s youth toward risky behaviors. Itfocuses on teaching the tools to cope with thechallenges of life in a healthy way. ThePrevention staff is a multi-disciplinary team ofJewish educators, mental health professionals,recovering addicts, and recovering parents.

Together, they take the students throughinteractive exercises designed to encouragehonest discussion about life’s pressures and therelentless pursuit of perfection, which hasbecome a cultural standard. The curriculum isflexible based on the organizations needs andusually includes a young person from BeitT’shuvah (the only Jewish rehab facility in thecountry) sharing their story of struggle andrecovery. starfish (ages 3–5)The American Red Cross infant and preschool aquaticsprograms are designed to give children the necessaryskills for water adjustment. Children will learn floats,breathing techniques, and assisted stroke and kick skills.

advanced starfish (ages 3–5)This class is designed for children who have perfectedbasic swimming skills in Starfish but are not at theage to move into Guppies. Children will perfect theirbasic skills while being introduced to new techniques.

guppies (ages 6+)This class is for swimmers with no previous swimmingexperience. Swimmers will learn the basic skills likebobbing, floating, gliding, and kicking. This class willalso cover basic pool rules and safety.

tadpoles (ages 6+)Swimmers will refine the basic skills they’ve learned in Guppies and be introduced to backstroke and sidebreathing. Swimmers will also learn water entry, retrievingobjects from 3 feet of water, and more safety skills.

dolphins (ages 6+)Swimmers should already be able to complete twofull laps of front crawl unassisted and one lap of

back crawl unassisted. Swimmers will be introducedto elementary backstroke, treading water, and dives.

eels (ages 6+)Swimmers should already be able to complete threefull laps of front crawl unassisted with good sidebreathing and two full laps of backstroke unassisted.Swimmers will refine elementary backstroke and beintroduced to sidestroke and breaststroke.

swordfish (ages 6+)Swimmers should already be able to swim four laps of front crawl unassisted, and three laps of backstrokeunassisted. Swimmers will refine front crawl, backstroke,sidestroke, and elementary backstroke.

shark (ages 6+)Swimmers must have passed the requirement for Sword-fish. This class is designed for swimmers who have refined front crawl, backstroke, elementary backstroke,breaststroke, and sidestroke. Swimmers will completebutterfly and work on conditioning and endurance.

Swim lessons are scheduled on a monthly basis.Registered participants have the same time slot forthe whole month.Payment for swim lessons must be made by 5:00 P.M.on the day the reservation is taken. If payment is notreceived by 5:00 P.M., Aquatics Management has theright to fill the spot with another swim student.All JCC corporate members must come in with a mem-bership packet completely filled out and a copy of theircorporate badge on the day of registration. Each swimlesson session will be allowed one makeup. All make-ups will be scheduled on Sundays between 10:30 A.M.–2:30P.M. Make-ups will be made with the same instructoron the Sunday if possible, however it is not guaran-teed and the make-up may be with a substitute in-structor. Once a make-up is scheduled and confirmed,there will be no rescheduling of the make-up lesson. There are no refunds. Class transfers will be at thediscretion of the Aquatics Management. In the case ofa class cancellation by the aquatics facility, AquaticsManagement will issue refund for that specific class.Swim sessions MUST be cancelled 48 hours prior tothe beginning of the swim session. If swim session iscancelled less then 48 hours, there will be a cancellationfee of $30. Barracuda novice swim team (ages 6-12 years)The Barracuda swim team is a year-round swimmingprogram.
