To the members, friends and supporters of GlobeMed !at Lawrence University: !!To think a year has gone by already…it seems like we were just in the process of starting the chapter of GlobeMed at Lawrence and wondering whether or not anyone would even want to join or be passionate about our cause. Little did we know that we would grow to a chapter of about 30 members and raise over $6,750. All of our success would not have been possible without the love and generosity of our families, friends, and supporters. !

!!This was a very trying year; however, every obstacle presented a great learning experience that was fundamental to our success. Although our GROW trip took an unexpected turn and in the end we were repartnered with a different organization, we were able to spend this year working in the indigenous communities of Ecuador with some of the most amazing people we have ever met. We hope that FUNPRONID will be able to get the support they need from their government in order to get up and running and hopefully be reunited with our GlobeMed family once they are more established.!

!!We are very optimistic about the future of GlobeMed at Lawrence University and our new partnership with the Health Development Initiative in Kigali, Rwanda. ONE BILLION PEOPLE ACROSS THE WORLD LACK ACCESS TO HEALTH CARE SYSTEMS*. EACH DAY, MORE THAN 36,000 PEOPLE DIE PREVENTABLE DEATHS. WITHOUT ADDRESSING POVERTY AND POOR HEALTH, WE CANNOT BREAK THIS CYCLE OF SUFFERING. UNIVERSITY STUDENTS HAVE THE PASSION AND ENERGY TO HELP TACKLE THIS CHALLENGE. GLOBEMED AIMS TO MEET THIS CHALLENGE BY ENGAGING AND TRAINING STUDENTS TO WORK WITH GRASSROOTS ORGANIZATIONS ACROSS THE WORLD TO IMPROVE THE HEALTH OF THE IMPOVERISHED. ABOUT US GlobeMed at Lawrence University

GlobeMed at Lawrence University was founded in 2010 by a group of passionate individuals driven to improve the health of the impoverished around the world. They were partnered with a small, volunteer-run organization in Licto, Ecuador called FUNPRONID in the summer of 2010 and by September, they grew to 30 passionate members. !!Through their hard work and dedication, they were able to raise over $6,750 to fund backpacks, shoes and schools supplies for 184 indigenous children in Licto, Ecuador. Four of the members went on the chapter’s first influential GROW trip during the summer of 2011, spending three weeks in Ecuador with their partner organization FUNPRONID. !!Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances the partnership was unable to continue. The quartet left Ecuador with heavy hearts but with fond memories and hope for a successful future with their new partner, the Health Development Initiative (HDI) in Rwanda.!

[About Fundación Promoción de los Niños Indígenas Discapacitados] FOUNDED IN 2005

FUNPRONID was started as a combined effort between 7 community volunteers with the help of the sponsorship of an Italian missionary in 2005. The organization was designed to impact 28 native communities by enacting projects such as educational scholarships, the construction of bathrooms in communities, and the distribution of medication and food. Their mission is to strengthen their community by protecting the community's rights to education, health, and food, especially for those who are elderly and/or disabled.!

POPULATION: 7,499

Ecuador before the Incan rule was full of many diverse indigenous cultures. The country was relatively peaceful until the arrival of the Incas about 1450 A.D. and was thrown into even more turmoil when the Spanish invaded around 1520 A.D. The next 300 years were characterized by numerous struggles for independence from Spain, and in May of 1830, a group of Quito notables drew up the first constitution for the State of Ecuador. Much of the 20th century was dominated by war with Peru and economic crises. Ecuador was returned to democratic rule in 1979; however, to this day there is much corruption in the Ecuadorian government.!!

FUNPRONID

GlobeMed at Lawrence University

[Why education?]!The adults in these communities are mainly small-scale farmers and do not have enough money to send their children to school. Frequently, parents leave their children behind to find work in the city, and the children are left t fend for themselves. These kids are often harassed, neglected, and even kidnapped and forced to beg on the streets for money. FUNPRONID found that if the children receive scholarships towards their schooling, their parents feel less pressured to move to the city to earn extra money and stay home with their children. As a result, the children receive an education and have their parents around as a source of support and protection.!

GlobeMed at Lawrence University aims to raise $5,000 to fund educational supplies and uniforms

that will allow 120 indigenous children to attend school in Licto, Ecuador.!

!During the 2010-2011 school year, GlobeMed at Lawrence

University funded backpacks, shoes and school supplies for 184 indigenous children in Licto, Ecuador. This project will lift some of

the economic stress from the children's parents who, living in poverty, carry a heavy burden and do not have much to spare. In addition, we funded new windows to replace those that had been

broken in the FUNPRONID building as well as the connection of a waterline that would supply the building with running water.!

AGI Alternative Giving Fair!

We had a booth at Lawrence's annual AGI Alternative Giving fair where people could buy scholarships for the indigenous children in Ecuador.!

Half-Time Competitions & Ecuadorian Bracelet Sales!

For most of our home basketball games and hockey matches, we held half-time competitions and sold bracelets from Ecuador to raise money for FUNPRONID!

Individual Giving Letter Writing Campaign!

We sent letters asking for donations to over 300 of our chapter's friends and family members explaining GlobeMed, our project, and our goal for the year.!

Since 2010, GlobeMed at Lawrence University has raised a total of over $6500 to support FUNPRONID's educational and medical initiatives in Licto, Ecuador.!

Strip Down for Soldarity May 15th 2011 Strip Down for Solidarity was a 5K run/walk in which participants could wear clothes that they wanted to donate to Goodwill to the event and strip them off in exchange for a race t-shirt. Although the weather was FREEZING and it was very windy, about 35-40 people came to support our cause and the event raised about $285 dollars. Although it was not our most successful fundraiser, it was a lot of fun and really cemented GlobeMed's name on our campus.!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE YEAR

GLOBALHEALTHU

The importance of globalhealthU in our chapter grew throughout the school year. It started as just something extra that we did at each meeting, but soon became one of the most enjoyable parts. !!Through ghU, members were able to learn more about others' ideas on important issues. ghU made it possible for people to talk about important issues other than what pertained directly to our partner. This made it so people learned more about global health and the importance of being open to others' ideas, and not focusing on just one issue. !!Finally, It was a way to facilitate further discussion within the chapter because it warmed people up to share ideas on other business during each meeting.!!On April 25th, we hosted Hotel Rwanda: Lessons Learned, as part of a collaborative effort between 10 different campus organizations, GlobeMed was able to help bring Paul Rusesabagina to Lawrence in order to share his story and message. About 2-3 people from each of the organizations were able to meet Paul before the speech and ask him questions one-on-one. Over 600 people attended his speech where he shared his experiences during the Rwandan genocide and discussed what we can learn from the event. !

students to develop a critical understanding of issues in global health and apply this knowledge! to their work with communities

At Lawrence, many of the members were incoming freshmen who were not yet familiar with many students on campus, so our conversations were initially more timid. Our community building started out as get-to-know-you games and some volunteer trips, but as relationships were formed, it really improved. Our staff retreat was a huge success and we started having weekly dinners where we would watch episodes of “Off the Map”. By the end of the year, our members became more friends than acquaintances, which made our globalhealthU discussions more interesting and our campaigns more successful.!

for me. Cliche as it may be, I mean it will all sincerity when I say I will never be the same person again. This

trip did exactly what the name says: it helped me to grow. To grow as a member of GlobeMed, to grow as a

friend, to grow as a college student. Most importantly, to grow as a person. I was faced with realities completely out of my comfort zone, to the point where I look back

and sometimes wonder how I got through it. The memories I made with the things I experienced and the

WORLD DAY OF SOCIAL JUSTICE

GLOBEMED AT LAWRENCE UNIVERSITY joined 31 other GlobeMed chapters across the nation in a network-wide commemoration of the 3rd Annual World Day of Social Justice on February 20, 2011, by asking students, professors, and community members on campus an open-ended, thought provoking question relating to social justice. !!OUR QUESTIONS: "Everyone deserves the right !to __?" and "What is global health?"!!BEHIND THE SCENES: We were curious to see how the rest of our campus would respond to questions about global health. By February, we had been exposed to these questions and felt like we had a firm grasp on our individual responses, but we wanted to gain an outside perspective on this difficult concept. !!MORE WDSJ ACTION -----------------------------------!!!Global Giving: It was a communal dinner put on the Friday before WDSJ with the help of the Co-op house on the Lawrence campus. We made a dinner open to the entire campus at the Co-op house and used the Devil's Advocate Q&A session questions to spark conversation about relevant global health/human rights/ social justice issues.!!!!!
