The Laurens-Marathon Board of Education met on Monday night, November 14. During the discussion section of the agenda, the board reviewed a 5-year financial plan. As a board, they set a target of maintaining an unspent balance of 15% for the next five years. Enrollment, state supplemental aid, and the rate expenditures grow have a direct impact on the budget. Enrollment decreased by 25 students this fall. State supplemental aid has not been set, but I would predict a low SSA rate. The board had a good discussion on the pros and cons of expanding the partial day sharing agreement with PAC. The board was unified with the concept of moving forward to whole grade share with PAC in grades 9-12 beginning with the 2017-18 school year. I have been directed to work with the administration from PAC to draft a possible sharing contract. The board currently does not have any plans to move toward reorganization. Volunteers Needed

Charger Pride

Holiday Gift Shop Charger Pride is having a Holiday Gift Shop for the students at Laurens-Marathon this year. The Holiday Gift shop is a special event for the students. Charger Pride and volunteers set up a “gift-store” in the school. Students can purchase gifts for

family and friends in a safe, friendly and comfortable environment. Students learn the importance of saving money and can plan their purchases in a positive

learning environment. All gifts are “kid priced” as low as $.50. The gifts will be placed in gift bags at the shop and sent home with the students.

Shop dates are December 1st, 2nd, 5th, 6th, and 7th. We need volunteers to staff the shop on those dates from 11:45 am to 3:30 pm. Even if you can only do one day

for an hour, any help would be appreciated. You will be helping the students shop, checking them out, and bagging/wrapping the gifts.

Please contact Allison Price with any questions or if you are able to volunteer your time at the shop.

Happy Thanksgiving! I love this holiday that reminds us of all that we have to be thankful for! One of the things I am thankful for is a long family weekend. The Library will be closed Thursday, Friday & Saturday, so stock up now to assure you have enough reading materials! New fiction at the library lately include: When All the Girls Have Gone by Jayne Ann Krentz, I'll Take You There by Wally Lamb, Wangs vs the World by Jade Chang, Bookshop on the Corner by Jenny Colgan, Guineveres by Sarah Domet, The Whole Towns Talking by Fannie Flagg, Faithful by Alice Hoffman and Fractured by Catherine McKenzie. The Class of ’64 donated large print volumes of W, X & Y in Sue Grafton’s alphabet series in memory of classmate Wes Etheridge. Finding Dory is our newest DVD. Attention TumbleBooks kids e-book users! There has been a bit of a change. You still follow the link on the Library’s webpage. But now they may ask for your library card number the first time you use a device. Here’s your hint: it’s a “p” followed by 4 digits. If you don’t remember it, call the library (Or maybe just try making one up….I didn’t try that, but I now wish I had!) Our November Book Club choice is The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba. This is the true story of an African teenager who built a windmill from scraps to create electricity for his home and his village, improving life for himself and his neighbors. He did all this after reading books in his local library! I got an early start on my book and have to say, I am totally enjoying it! We will meet November 28 to discuss this book.

• Tell Me a Yarn every Monday 5-7 p.m. • Card Making 4th Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

• Take it Tuesday 1st Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. • Book Club is 4th Monday at 7 p.m.

Meet the New Laurens Pool

The Laurens Pool Committee has rolled out a new reduced cost and affordable pool project for the Laurens Community. The pool cost has been reduced by over one million dollars. This very thoughtful project has been developed by the hardworking Pool Committee over the past 6-7 months and includes the following features:

The failing 61-year old bathhouse will be replaced. The existing bathhouse is located only six feet from the back of the pool wall and does not offer efficient space for renovation or deck space. The new bathhouse will be located as shown in the above site plan, resulting in a very efficient layout.

The 61-year old swimming pool, although structural stable, suffers from severe leakage and does not have proper swimming lanes. This pool vessel will be renovated with a small extension creating the correct swimming lanes, an addition of a ADA staircase, new perimeter gutter and all new deck. To leak proof the pool vessel, a heavy duty PVC liner will be installed, eliminating the bi-annual pool painting.

The failed pool piping will be replaced and new recirculation equipment will be installed.

The renovated pool will still have diving, proper swim lanes and play area. With this new layout multiple activities can occur in the pool vessel at the same time.

The total cost for the project is $1.94m and will result in many years of service to the community.

Your financial help is much needed to bring this project into reality.

Services Held for Lois E. KneedlerLois was born on June 28, 1926 at home on the family farm in Palo Alto County, Iowa; the third child and second daughter of Martin and Virginia Dahlberg. She attended elementary school in a one room schoolhouse built on a corner section of land donated by her father and went on to attend and graduate from Laurens High School, Laurens, IA in 1943. During those years, she played clarinet and marched in the band; developing a life–long love of marching bands and their music. Lois briefly attended Morningside College before returning to Laurens to work. After WWII, she moved to Des Moines where she resided for the rest of her life. She raised two children on her own after a brief marriage and, despite the obstacles of the time, purchased her own home where she resided until moving into Assisted Living in 2012. In September, 1971, she married Larry Kneedler who preceded her in death in February, 2015. In 1988, Lois retired after more than 32 years as a cashier for the Polk County Treasurer's Office-Motor Vehicle Division. After retirement, she would frequently say that she didn't know how she had found time to work. She enjoyed traveling and being with her sisters,

Eleanor, Helen and Dorothy, and her daughter and grandchildren in Texas. She doted on her family, enjoyed being known as 'Nana' to her grandchildren and 'Super Nana' to

her great-grandchildren. She worked to stay in contact with extended family scattered across the continent and diligently researched and documented the family genealogy through accessing libraries and dusty records long before the advent of the internet. She also loved crafts and working on

the various projects and ministries of her beloved church, Sheridan Park United Methodist Church in East Des Moines, where she served in various leadership and membership positions. Lois was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Larry Kneedler, her brother and wife, Ernest & Donna Dahlberg, sister and husband, Eleanor & Thomas

Shepperdson, sister and husband, Helen & Loren Hudson. She is survived by her daughter and husband, Sandra & Thomas Masters of Midland Park, NJ and son and wife, Ronald & Margaret Dahlberg of Des Moines; three grandchildren and grandchildren-in-laws, Kristine (& Kevin) Thompson of Pearl River, NY, Andrew (& Jennifer) Masters of Laredo, TX. and Kasey (& Nathan) Geary of Elizabethtown, KY, and three great-grandsons, Ethan Thompson of Pearl River, NY and Jacob & Caleb Masters of Laredo, TX in addition to several nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to Sheridan Park United Methodist Church, 4100 East Sheridan Avenue, Des Moines, IA 50317.
