Democrats to Caucus in LaurensOne of Iowa's famous Presidential caucuses will occur at the Laurens-Marathon school at 7 pm on Monday, Feb 3, 2020. People who live in the Swan Lake precinct (who vote at the Laurens City Hall) are eligible to attend. The caucus selects leadership for the Democratic party in Pocahontas County by choosing one man and one woman from each precinct to form a county-wide central committee. It will also begin the process of choosing a President of the United States by naming delegates to a county convention in March. Presidential candidates who have more support at the caucus will win more of the delegates. The Laurens caucus will be called to order by Amber Evans, but anyone can then run for the office of caucus chair. Caucus voters may also offer platform planks for the party to adopt and will be able to help Iowa candidates get on the ballot by signing their nomination petitions. The caucus will last about an hour. Voters who are not already Democrats may change their registration on the night of the caucus. Anyone old enough to vote next November may participate. Children are welcome. Persons

needing a ride should call 845-4496. The location of any Iowa caucus can be found at https://iowademocrats.org/2020-caucuses/

At the Library with Glenda MulderJanuary 15, 2020

I’ve read a number of articles recently, detailing the importance of art in our lives. The researchers all seem to agree that the act of creating something can reduce stress and anxiety and improve your mood. The last study I read even said it doesn’t matter if you are good at it, how it turns out, or even if you finish it! This is confirmation to me that we are doing something good for ourselves and our library patrons with our card making class and Take it Tuesday. Contact the library if you’d like to participate in either of these! New novels include: Westering Women by Sandra Dallas, Long Bright River by Liz Moore, You Were There Too by Colleen Oakley, A Country Guesthouse by Robyn Carr, Big Lies in a Small Town by Diane Chamberlain, How Quickly She Disappears by Raymond Fleischmann, The Better Liar by Tanen Jones, Lost by James Patterson and All The Ways We Said Goodbye by Beatriz Williams. January Book Club Choice is This Is How It Always Is by Laurie Frankel. This Reese Witherspoon Book Club pick should make for a spirited discussion! The novel has been described like this, “a novel about revelations, transformations, fairy tales, and family. And it’s about the ways this is how it always is: Change is always hard and miraculous and hard again, parenting is always a leap into the unknown with crossed fingers and full hearts, children grow but not always according to plan. And families with secrets don’t get to keep them forever.” You’ve got plenty of time to read this, we don’t meet until January 27!

Writing Your Retirement Paycheck- PocahontasHow can I be sure my retirement funds will last my lifetime? This important question will be addressed in an Iowa State University Extension and Outreach workshop January 16 and 23, 2020 from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm at Pocahontas County Extension Office, 305 N Main Street, Pocahontas, IA 50574. Writing Your Retirement Paycheck is designed to provide information needed by those approaching retirement within the next ten years. The workshop outlines key factors to consider prior to retirement and describes two strategies for structuring your retirement income. “For most of us,” says Carol Ehlers, Human Sciences Specialist in family finance, “our paychecks have been determined by someone else all our lives. But in retirement, many of us are responsible to write our own paychecks. How will we know how big it should be?” According to Ehlers, who will lead the workshop, topics include: inflation, health costs, Social Security, required minimum distributions, annuities, and more. “Individuals need to make their own decisions about retirement,” says Ehlers “but clear and non-commercial information is a necessary ingredient for decision-making.” Ehlers points out that even those who work with a trusted financial professional must ultimately make the decisions themselves. A financial professional can suggest or recommend products and strategies, but it is the consumer who decides and then lives with the results of the decisions. A fee of $35 for the Writing Your Retirement Paycheck workshop will help to off-set direct expenses and to support the Human Sciences County Extension Program. The Poison in a Pothos PlantAs most pet owners know, there are certain types of plants that should be kept out of reach or removed from the home once a pet is introduced. Cats and dogs have a tendency to explore and get themselves into trouble, so it is our job to keep potential poisons out of their path. One distinction I was recently asked about is a good one to point out here: Why are some things called venomous and others considered poisonous? This is a great question with a simple answer - if it bites you and you die it is venomous, if you bite it and you die it is poisonous. For example, Rattlesnakes are venomous while many mushrooms are poisonous. With that distinction in mind, there are many houseplants that can poison the furriest family member. There are too many plants to name them all here, so a more extensive list can be found on the Animal Poison Control Center website where they outline which plants are harmful and why. One family of plants will be the focus here: Araceae or Alum family. This grouping of plants includes Pathos (Devil's Ivy), Dieffenbachia (Dumbcane), Philodendron, Schefflera (Umbrella Plant),and Chinese Evergreen. Most of these are grown for their colorful leaves and are very common across the state. The concern comes from a crystal-like structure found in cells throughout these plants called a Raphide, which is formed from calcium oxides. These microscopic raphides are very needle-like so when an animal bites into a leaf, they are deployed to attack. When raphides do come into contact with exposed flesh, they prick the skin and release a toxin. The target area is the mouth and throat of any predator interested in eating it, but there may also be a reaction if the sap comes into contact with any other exposed skin. Signs of a reaction after biting or eating any of these plants include swelling in the mouth and throat, numbness, stinging, burning, and a lack of speaking ability. There is good news after all this! Most pets will not be able to eat enough of these plants to be fatal, but that does not mean they will not try. Moving the offensive plants to off-limits rooms or outside may be enough to protect pets. Of course, the only completely effective way to protect your pet is to dispose of these plants entirely, especially if a pet has a determination to chew on plants. Other common houseplants that pose a threat to the well-being of both pets and children include Jade plant, all types of true lilies, Amaryllis, and Geraniums. These plants contain chemical compounds that target the gastro-intestinal track rather than structures that puncture. Whether you are a new pet or new plant owner, a bit of research before-hand will help avoid potential disasters in the future! Farm and Agribusiness Succession Workshop January 20 in PocahontasIowa State University Extension and Outreach will host a Farm and Agribusiness Succession workshop on Monday, Jan. 29 from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the ISU Extension and Outreach office located in Pocahontas. The workshop is open to farmers and agribusinesses interested in successful succession and transition of their farm or business. “We see a reoccurring need in the Northwest Iowa agriculture community for education on successful succession, whether that be in farming or other agribusiness,” said Gary Wright, Farm and Agribusiness Management Specialist for ISU Extension and Outreach. “Transition and succession are difficult topics to broach with family members; but it is even more difficult if plans are not set in place and communicated before the need for them arises.” Key presentations include:

• “Succession/Transition,” presented by Gary Wright,Farm and Agribusiness Management Specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach;

• “Beginning Farmer Loan and Tax Credit Programs,”presented by Steve Ferguson, Ag Development Program Specialist with the Iowa Finance Authority;

• “Farm Succession Planning Consideration,” presentedby Kitt Tovar, Legal Consultant with the Center for Agricultural Law and Taxation;

• “Farm Succession Ideas for a Successful andHarmonious Transition,” presented by David Baker, Director of the ISU Extension Beginning Farmer Center. “Attendees will leave with a better understanding of farm and agribusiness succession, some ideas for what will work for their own enterprise and contact information for people who can help set their ideas into motion,” Wright says. Registration is $40 per person, which covers all materials, presentations and an evening meal. Individuals can register by Jan 16 by contacting the Pocahontas County Office at 712-335-3103 or [email protected].

Regional Soil Fertility Workshops Planned at Humboldt County Extension and OutreachISU Extension and Outreach Pocahontas and Humboldt Counties will host soil fertility workshop for producers to gain valuable fertility management knowledge and learn more about soil testing The cost of managing soil fertility in Iowa continues to change, with increased fertilizer input costs and a rising demand for nutrients from higher-yielding crops. To help producers understand the changes, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is hosting four regional workshops in January and February called “Soil Testing Interpretations and Recommendations: Maximizing Return on Investment.” The workshops will lead farmers through the basics of soil testing, analytical tests, calculating crop nutrient removal, understanding return on investment from fertilizer applications, how crop response correlates to soil test levels and what is known about crop response to micronutrients. “This workshop provides producers the skills to best allocate

fertilizer input dollars on their farms,” said Paul Kassel, field agronomist with ISU Extension and Outreach. Angie Rieck-Hinz, field agronomist with ISU Extension and Outreach, said producers are already thinking about the 2020 growing season soil fertilizer decisions. She said the workshops are designed to help farmers understand their current soil nutrient situation, the amount their crops are using in a growing season, and what needs to be added. Details and locations: Registration is limited and is required by contacting the specific workshop location a producer wishes to attend. Fees can be paid the day of the workshop. Registration for each event includes publications, copies of presentation and lunch. Additional workshops will be scheduled across Iowa through winter.
