Management, 2012. 4.2 TOYOTA SOUTH AFRICA MOTORS – SHE DEPARTMENT
PERIOD : January 2008 to April 2011 POSITION HELD : Environmental Manager, Waste and Systems
RESPONSIBILITIES
Waste management was the major part of my job. Toyota practices extensive
waste sorting and recycling on site. Current recycling rates are close to 80%. I managed this as well as managing the correct disposal of hazardous waste. This involved chairing and coordinating the Toyota Waste Working Group across all the Toyota plants in Durban. Management of the waste contractors was also my responsibility.
Toyota is very diligent in recording waste figures per plant and setting reduction targets, and to this end I was responsible for the development and implementation of an electronic waste tracking system to improve our accuracy. We were also involved in projects to minimize waste by reducing packaging waste and finding alternative uses for our sludge wastes which had been delisted.
Manager of the Waste Water Treatment Plant. Due to staff shortages I managed the WWTP for a period of 18 months. This involved managing both the contractors on site and the maintenance manager to ensure that the water quality leaving the plant was up to Metro specs.
ISO 14001 and Toyota EMS implementation, maintenance, training and auditing. This was another major focus area. I was the EMS manager in charge of 6 Toyota plants working with the Environmental Champions in ISO 14001 implementation and maintenance. This involved all aspects of the system and a great deal of internal auditing as well as auditing with external auditors.
Legal Compliance and Significant Environmental Aspects Management
A key part of my function was to ensure legal compliance of significant environmental aspects for the plants that I managed. Each operation deemed environmentally significant had to have legally compliant operational controls in

place. This involved a significant amount of on the job training in Environmental Engineering and working with contractors on projects.
Liaison with external organizations, in particular the Isipingo/Mbokodweni
Catchment Management Forum (CMF), and Prospecton Business Forum. I saw the CMF as an important part of my job.
Sustainability Reporting and Environmental Communications I co-ordinated the production of the 2008 and 2010 Toyota Sustainability report. To view a copy of the reports go to: http://www.toyota.co.za . I have studied the field of Sustainability report writing and this I snow one of my areas of specialization.
Liaison with authorities. I was involved with obtaining waste water discharge
permits, a scheduled trade permit, a waste license in terms of the new Waste Act (NEMWA) and registration as a tyre producer in terms of the Waste Tyre Regulations. Liaison with authorities is always an important part of the function of an Environmental Manager.
4.3 ANGLO PLATINUM – REGIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL DEPARTMENT – RUSTENBURG PERIOD : 2001 – 2005 POSITION HELD : Environmental Manager: Systems, Waste and
Projects RESPONSIBILITIES Develop and co-ordinate the implementation of an integrated waste management
system across the company’s Rustenburg region. This became the major part of my job. A serious problem existed at the company with regard to a massive buildup of solid
waste at many of the Business Units and particularly at the shafts. My task was to develop a regional waste management system that would take care
of the backlog as well as ensuring that in the future the system would run smoothly and be fully legally compliant.
This involved analyzing the problem together with senior company executives, researching possible alternatives, workshopping the alternatives with managers across the region, removing waste contractors and replacing them with new contractors. The system was formalized with detailed Site Specific Waste Management Plans and regular audits of these plans.
The system covered all aspects of solid waste management including the development and management of waste sorting and recycling areas, central salvage yard management, landfill site management and permitting, hazardous waste and medical waste.
A Waste Information System was also researched and developed.
Permit the Anglo Platinum Landfill site This involved the rehabilitation of the landfill site including the management and reorganization of the existing waste pickers on the site. It also involved organizing several stakeholders meetings and liaising with the authorities towards the permitting of the site.

Develop and co-ordinate the implementation of an Environmental Management
System which could be certified to ISO 14001 across the Business Units of the company’s Rustenburg region.
o This involved workshopping and discussions with senior, middle and junior management at all business units, co-ordinating the employment of Environmental Coordinators at the Business Units who would champion the implementation of the EMS, working with consultants and being part of the implementation of an electronic database that managed the EMS across the company.
