in drei Regionalprojekten in unterschiedlichen Modellregionen
untersucht. In der Region „Hochsauerlandkreis“ wird die Wir-
kung von BKS auf Baumwachstum und Bodeneigenschaften
sowie Nährstoffauswaschung auf Windwurfflächen und unter
Weihnachtsbaumkulturen untersucht.
Figure 3: The pH of the soil (± standard deviation) in fall 2011.

background and aims
The joint research project “Laterra“ focused on the potential
applications of biochar substrates in three model regions. In
the Hochsauerlandkreis region, we investigated the impact of
biochar substrates on tree growth, soil characteristics and nu-
trient leaching in windfall areas and in Christmas tree cultures.
We addressed the optimal supply of young trees and the po-
tential use of biochar substrates as a controlled-release fertili-
zer instead of conventional fertilization strategies.
approach
A field experiment was set up comprising experimental plots
with different biochar substrates (BKS) containing different lev-
els of biochar (15 or 30 %) in a windfall area and a Christmas
tree plantation (Figures 1 and 2), with samples taken in spring
and fall. We investigated the influence of biochar substrates
on various soil properties and the growth of the trees. A lysi-
meter study was also conducted, and leachate samples were
analyzed to measure the leaching of nutrients.
Figure 4: NO3 leachate in lysimeter plots.
results
In the experimental plots with acidic soils, the biochar subs-
trate variants led to a significant increase in soil pH (Figure 3).
BKS15 showed the greatest effect, increasing the pH by al-
most one unit. The lysimeter study showed that BKS15 also
reduced nitrate leaching slightly, whereas BKS30 reduced
leaching by 50 % (Figure 4). The spring of 2012 featured severe
late frosts, and we observed better frost resistance in trees
growing on windfall plots supplemented with biochar subs-
trates plots, significantly reducing tree losses (Figure 5).
Figure 5: Frost damage as a percentage of total trees (beech) lost in
windfall plots.
conclusion
We observed the positive impact of biochar substrates on soil
properties and tree growth, especially the reduction in nitrate
leaching. However, it is not yet possible to draw conclusions
about the long-term effect of biochar substrates since the
duration of the investigation is still too short.
