Number flash cards 11 to 20A ball or bean bag

* Using the flash cards, drill numbers 11 through 20. When you reach 16, pronounce the number slowly and loudly. Ask if anyone heard what two numbers are being said. (Answer: 10 and 6) Continue in this way through 19. Remember that the letter "v" in "veinte" is pronounced like a soft "b" .

* Practice counting from 11 to 20 using a ball or beanbag. The teacher begins by saying "once" then tosses the beanbag or ball to a student, who says "doce". Be sure that the ball or beanbag is returned to the teacher each time to keep things under control. As students become more proficient, start the counting with a number other than 11. Then start with 1 and count all the way to 20.* Count by twos, using a ball or beanbag after students become more proficient.* Show or draw pictures containing up to 20 familiar items, such as fruits. Ask questions such as, "¿Cuántas ciruelas hay?"

* Show Vocabulary - Numbers 11-20. Ask students to repeat after the speaker. Tell them to listen very closely to the numbers 16 to 19 for something interesting about the way these numbers are formed.

POST-VIEWING ACTIVITIES

PRE-VIEWING ACTIVITIES* Start counting to "diez" asking the class to join in. When you reach number 11, use the flash cards, and continue counting to 20.

ONLINE EXERCISES

GRAMMAR NOTE* Note the spelling of numbers 16 to 19. The "z" changes to a "c" in the word "diez".

* Unit 2 - More practice - Game "a".

Note. Write the jingle in large letters on a flip chart for students to learn.

ADDITIONAL SUGGESTIONS* Practice numbers each day for a few minutes. Try to integrate them into math lessons for reinforcement. This can be integrated into a calendar activity in which a different student each day leads the class in counting until you reach the current day of the month.

* Do math problems on the board, which involve numbers 1 to 20.

* Jump Rope Game. Obtain a long jump rope. While two students are swinging it, a third person "runs in" and begins to jump as the class recites: "Zapatito blanco, zapatito azul," "Little white shoe, little blue shoe Dime, ¿cuántos años tienes tú?" Tell me, tell me. How old are you?"

The jumper calls out a number, "quince" for example, indicating how many times he/she can jump without missing. The class counts to "quince" while the person jumps, then "runs out." If the person misses, he or she is out. If no jump rope is available, students could do jumping jacks for the number of years. If it is hot, or if the classroom is too small, just use the two pointer fingers on each hand to simulate jumping.

POST-VIEWING ACTIVITIES (ctd)

* Number Guessing Game. Select a range of numbers, say from 8 to 20. Write all of these numbers on the board. Ask a student to secretly think of a number in that range. Have him or her write it on a piece of paper and give it to you. The class then tries to guess the number by saying, for example, "¿Es trece?" The student replies, "No, no es trece." or "Sí, es trece." The game continues until the correct number is guessed. It helps to have another student standing by to cross out or erase the numbers that have been guessed. You can also use the symbols > for "more than" ("más de") and < for "less than" ("menos de") when responding to the incorrect number answer. For example, "No, es menos de quince. No, es más de diez."* Use Activity Sheets 11a, 11b, 11c, 11d, 11e, 11f and 11g.

Student A: "Hola, ¿cómo te llamas?" Student A: "¿Cuántos años tienes?

My name is…How old are you?I'm … years old.

* Make a student ID card or passport. Have students bring in a photograph of themselves to glue on a piece of paper. Under the picture, they may write the following sentences: "Me llamo_________." "Tengo ... años."Display these in the classroom on a bulletin board.* Play a name introduction game: This game involves bouncing (dribbling) a basketball in place and saying a chant that follows the alphabet as follows:

* The first student starts with letter A and has to fill in the blanks with appropriate words starting with that letter (while bouncing the ball); Example: "Hola, me llamo (Anna) Mi hermano se llama (Adán)"

* The ball then gets passed to next student, who repeats the chant, only substituting words beginning with B, and so on.

* The teacher can model the above mini-dialogues using hand puppets. Put students in pairs for individual practice.
