The Fifth Annual Pensacola Invitational Math Competition
The Fifth Annual Pensacola Invitational Math Competition, sponsored by the Pensacola Post of the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME), was held on Saturday, April 12, 2014. Ten schools from across the region brought a total of 200 middle school students to com-pete in the competition. Superintendent of Escambia County Schools Malcolm Thomas and Mr. Wes Hamill from SAME attended to help pass out awards to the winners at the end of the day.
There are three levels for competition participants: Math I (6th grade), Math II (7th grade) and Algebra I (8th grade) Competitors take a challenging individual 50 minute test and also participate as a team working against the clock against other teams participating at the same level. Three types of awards are given: 1) Individual Awards are based on performance on the individual test only. 2) Team Awards are based on combining the score of the team round with the scores of the individual tests of the members of that team. 3) Sweepstakes Awards are overall school awards. Our students did an outstanding job at the competition. 8th Grade team took 1st place overall at the Algebra I level. Team members: Kareem Bataineh, Riley Laggan, Cara Kizilbash, and Dina Razek 7th Grade formed two teams and did an excellent job under pressure in the team round. Team 1: Parker Beverly, Wally Odom, Gabe Sarazin, Lisa Tripathy Team 2: Nicole Daley, Katie Fitzgerald, Vanessa Welch 6th Grade formed two teams to compete in the Math I category. Team 1 took 2nd place overall at the Math I level, based on both their team and individual scores. Team members: Luke Beiswenger, Luca Benny, Katherine McCrackin, Nicholas Skoufis Team 2 placed first in the team round, scoring 96 points, higher than any other school competing in the Math I team round. Points for the team round are based on both speed and accuracy. Team members: Alex Atherton, Sami Humeda, Mehul Kapur, Yasmine Kha-bou Creative Learning Academy took home 2nd place in the overall Sweepstakes Award. This award was an average of our partici-pating students. We could not have taken the Sweepstakes without the hard work and contribution of all of our students! Awards were also given for the top 10 individual competitors at each level. Algebra I : Kareem Bataineh – 2nd place Dina Razek – 5th place Riley Laggan – 8th place Math II:: Gabe Sarazin – honorable mention Math I: Luke Beiswenger – 6th place Mehul Kabur – 7th place Nicholis Skoufis – honorable mention Alex Atherton – honorable mention
Congratulations to all!
