2015
DIARY As we come to the close of yet another term at Longfield Academy and 2015 draws to an end, it is always a good time to look back at all the wonderful things that we have achieved and celebrated at Longfield. It is also a time to look forward to the new year and the challenges it brings. We hope you enjoy the newsletter that shares our achievements. We would like to thank students, staff, parents and governors for the ongoing support of the Academy in being a great place to learn. On a daily basis we are seeing students achieving and making progress in their learning. With new GCSEs and subject guidance, our staff have embraced the challenge of change and ensured that learning remains exciting, vibrant and enjoyable at Longfield Academy. We have held several information evenings this term to ensure that all parents and carers are aware of the changes being made in education and we will continue to keep you in-formed. Our high standards of uniform remain, and we are pleased that parents and students have embraced and supported our drive to have the smartest students in Dartford! We know that over the holidays it is often a time to replace uniform and shoes, so we would ask you check the website for uniform guidance. As always, trainers are not acceptable footwear and so please do ensure that appropriate shoes are purchased. At Longfield Academy we continue to work closely with our neighbours and members of the local community. Through our discussions with residents of The Chase, it is apparent that a considerable number of parents are using the area as a pick up and drop off point for their children. Whilst we would always encourage parents in arranging alternative off-site collection, The Chase is a privately owned development and so we ask that parents and children do not meet there. Dartford Borough Council have arranged for a safety vehicle to visit the local area to ensure that all parents are aware of the arrangements. They will be using camera technology to assist with encouraging compliance to these rules. And finally, it is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our former student, Amy Kemp. For those of us that knew Amy, her bright and positive outlook was a source of inspiration to us all. She sadly lost her her fight against cancer and we pass our condolences to her family.

The Student Leadership team consists of students in Year 12 & 13 who have all been allocated roles to improve Academy life for all students. Roles such as Head Boy and Head Girl along with Deputies, Student Council Leaders, Sports Leaders and a Social Committee Leader, all meet on a regular basis to discuss issues and generate ideas to make everyone's time here more enjoyable. We have already made the decision to run clubs at lunch time as well as producing a timetable for the younger students to have outside games on the MUGA. We are all currently working to implement a new and improved Student Council with some members of the team producing a presentation for the college assemblies, advertising the Student Council to encourage younger students to get involved and work alongside the two Student Council Leaders. We have a list of exciting things that we wish to achieve this academic year. We are currently working hard towards these to ensure that students have the every opportunity to go above and beyond at Longfield Academy.

Accelerated Reader (AR) is a reading programme for our Key Stage 3 students.
The books have a level which is appropriate for a student's reading age and ability and includes both vocabulary as well as comprehension. Once a book has been read, the student then takes a quiz on their book. The outcome of the score will determine how many book levels a student goes up (or down).
When a student achieves 90% or above on an AR quiz they will receive a prize and a positive credit.
A Star Reader is a student who has achieved 100% in all of the AR quizzes that they have completed.
Students are also recognised for the number of words they have read. Words are only counted in books where the students pass the quiz.

The AS Applied Science students celebrated World Radiology Day on 10 November, by visiting Fawkham Manor hospital.
The hospital has a comprehensive imaging department and the staff were on standby to explain the different machines and techniques used in diagnoses. Not only did they listen to explanations of the MRI scanner, a DEXA bone density scan, and X rays but were also able to try out the moving examination table in Fluoroscopy. Some of the students were scanned using the ultrasound. This was followed by a talk by the clinical lead consultant radiologist.
Following this informative visit the students are now able to use all the information given within their coursework.
The event was very enjoyable and informative.

Traditionally the Day of the Dead is celebrated in Mexico and other Latin American countries on 1st November each year. It was recently featured in Spectre, as James Bond pursues a villain during the festival in Mexico.
Our Year 9 students studied festivals and celebrations in Term 1.
During the October half term, they were asked to produce a piece of work to show their understanding of the Dia de los Muertos. Students could choose to create a sculpture or a painting, prepare some food or design a poster.
We received many great entries and it was hard for teachers to vote for their favourite one.
We do, however, have three winners:
1st prize Poppy Bridle
2nd prize Kayleigh Mills
3rd prize Lily Goodwin
Students were given a voucher to buy a hot drink and cake in the Helix.
A new competition will be offered to Year 7 and 8 students in the Spring term.

Arts
On the 12th November both the A2 Business Double Award students, Performing Arts
students, and the Professional Cookery students came together in order to host an event in
honour of the Mayor’s Charity meal. This proved to be a success with us raising £745 in
total going as donations towards the Lollypop Fund for Darenth Valley Hospital (Mayor’s
selected charity). Not only did we host an event out of goodwill, but we also learnt how to
prepare a successful 5* evening dining event which will benefit the Telescope Bistro in
future events that will follow.

All students are required to bring and wear the appropriate kit to each and every lesson whether they are participating or not. Any student who fails to bring kit will be loaned an alternative for that lesson, where one is available. This must be returned at the end of the lesson and a sanction given in line with the school's PE behaviour management policy.
Students who are injured or unable to participate physically in a lesson must bring a note excusing them from the lesson in addition to bringing and wearing their kit. Any injury that requires a student to be excused for a period of time greater than 2 weeks must be covered by a Doctor's/Hospital note. Please be aware that in the interest of student welfare and Government guidelines students excused for any reason must also change into school PE kit. Students excused from practical participation in a lesson will still accompany the lesson and be the responsibility of the teacher leading the lesson. Each student will be provided with an educational task related to the activity being taught which will assist the development of his or her organisation, observation, evaluation and leadership skills, whilst not being practically active. In light of this policy it is strongly recommended that students wear a tracksuit in the lesson, particularly when excused from practical involvement. Changing into PE kit will prevent students from having to spend the remainder of the day in potentially dripping wet or muddy clothing and footwear. Failure of students excused from lessons to bring their kit to lessons will result in a sanction in line with the school's PE behaviour management policy. A detention will be given. Exceptions to this policy will only apply to those students who are physically unable to change due to the nature of their injury. Such severe injuries must be accompanied by a Doctor's/Hospital note on headed paper.

This is the second year that we have been offering a Cheerleading club at Longfield

expert coaching from the head coaches of ICE Cheerleading Academy. In February the
team will be competing at their first competition run by Legacy Cheer and Dance at the
Copper Box Arena, London. GOOD LUCK GIRLS.

Dartford and Gravesham District Cross Country
On Thursday 5th November, 14 students from Longfield Academy travelled to the
Leigh Acadmey to take part in the Dartford and Gravesham District Cross Country
event. The top 8 finishers from each race would automatically qualify for the Kent
School Championship. All students put in a great effort on this cold, wet and very
windy day. Congratulations to all students who were selected to represent the
District Cross Country Swanley Park Friday 27th November
Mrs Davies and Mr Powell took 11 students to Swanley park to take part in our
second District Cross Country event. Once again all students, who took part, ran
well. Special congratulations goes to Bethany Panton and Calista Boulton who came

Frost Fest 2015 took place on December 2nd at Longfield Academy. Featuring frosty-themed activities during the daytime and an art exhibition and music and drama performances during the evening, Frost Fest celebrated the work of the many talented actors, musicians and visual artists that study at Longfield Academy. Students from all year groups exhibited and performed, many for the first time in front of an audience, and we even had a visit from Frosty The Snowman to welcome our audience into the theatre! Many thanks and congratulations to all students who took part, and to the family, friends and staff that supported them.

The Longfield Academy pantomime this year proposed an evening of bold, cheerful and traditional panto routines. The bright, hand-crafted set design was put together by a team of dedicated artists to create the classic woodland scenes of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. Renditions of ‘Footloose’ and ‘I Want It All’ refreshed the music tastes of the whole family, from tiny tots to glamorous grannies, with the routines choreographed by Matisse student Amy Reynolds.
The troublesome-duo of Bogwort and Stinkwort, played by Conor Donovan and Tom Salter, entertained all ages with their brilliant, bold stage presence and excellent ad-libbing. Extra comic touches were added by a classic pantomime Dame, played by Luke Walden, whose eccentric makeup added to his hysterical and witty jokes.
The live band, made up of teachers and students, kept the audience’s feet tapping away throughout the pantomime. With a touch of fairy-magic, a giant bear and a sweet romance between Megan Panton’s Snow White and Samuel Head’s Prince Frederick that was almost ruined by Mille Knapp’s Evil Stepmother and her poisoned apple, this pantomime was definitely one to remember with its melodramatic, but riotously funny cast and steady stream of classic gags.
