Pag. 1

Preface

Scope of the document This manual is a guide for the users and maintenance personnel of the Safetybox Laser Marking System.

The machine has been designed to allow laser marking operations within a secure volume bounded by

the cabinet of the machine and by a movable door. Within the security area, a vertical axis allows the

laser head to focus appropriately on the workpieces to be processed.

The machine, designed to be positioned on a work plane of height appropriate to the needs of the

operator, consists of the following three groups:

1. Frame structure with manually operated door with interlock and window with reflected and / or

scattered laser radiation protection glass

2. Z axis for vertical positioning of the laser head

3. Datalogic laser marking head group with a Class 4 laser and barcode readers with double Class

2 laser pointer (optional).

The manual for the laser marking system, with instructions for use and maintenance, is enclosed.

This manual contains a description of the machine and its functions, the description of the commands

2 Description and characteristics

General description This manual is a guide for the users and maintenance personnel of the Safetybox Laser Marking System.

3. Datalogic laser marking head group with Class 4 laser and barcode readers with double Class 2

laser pointer (optional).

The machine is available in six versions identified by the code in the “Model” field of the CE plate (see

the figure on the preceding page):

Interlocked movable door The machine is completely closed by its bodywork, except for access to the work surface of the parts to

be processed. After positioning the workpiece, the operating volume of the laser marking head is closed

by means of the movable door (shown open in the figure below and closed in the figure on the previous

page).

The Safetybox Laser Marking System can be equipped with a manual or motorized movable door (see

the details on its operation in section “Machine operation” on page 25 and in section “Motorized door”

on page 21).

Arex / Vlase The movable door is fitted with a safety switch connected to the control circuit of the laser head.

Figure 9 – Interlocked movable door open (Arex)

The circuit relative to the safety door disables the Class 4 laser of the marking head thanks to the double

and redundant connection to the internal “enable” signals. When the door is open, it is not possible to

start the marking process because the marking head’s laser is disabled.

The 4-pin interlock connector located on the back of the machine is connected to the emergency

pushbutton and implements a double and redundant safety interlock that complies with the EN60825-1

standard.

Note. The above is valid under normal operating conditions, i.e. with ESCL. PORTA key switch in

position "0". For special setup operations that require open door operation, see section “Excluding the

safety door" on page 27.

Page 22: Laser Marking System - Delta Visione · 2018-04-06 · scattered laser radiation protection glass 2. Z axis for vertical positioning of the laser head 3. Datalogic laser marking head

Pag. 20

Uniq The movable door is fitted with a safety switch connected to the control circuit of the laser head.

Figure 10 – Interlocked movable door open (Uniq)

The circuit relative to the safety door disables the Class 4 laser of the marking head when the door is

open: the ENABLE signal is not active and the safety shutter covering the laser emission hole is closed.

If the door is opened during the marking process, the 4-pin interlock connector located on the back of

the machine and connected to the safety switch of the movable door implements a double and redundant

safety interlock that complies with the EN60825-1 standard.

When the movable door is open, the marking process cannot be started because the Class 4 laser of the

marking head is covered by the shutter and marking is disabled.

Note. The above is valid under normal operating conditions, i.e. with ESCL. PORTA key switch in

position "0". For special setup operations that require open door operation, see section “Excluding the

safety door" on page 27.

Pag. 21

Motorized door The opening / closing of the motorized door is controlled by the operating conditions of the machine.

Pressing the START button closes the door and, when the door is closed, starts the marking process

(after the phases described in "Machine operation” on page 25).

At the end of the marking process, the mobile door opens automatically to allow the workpiece to be

removed.

Note: The force applied by the engine when moving the door is such that there is no risk of crushing or

pinching if the operator should interpose a hand or finger while closing. Also during the opening phase,

a pressure on the handle immediately interrupts the movement and the door remains in the position

reached.

If the door does not close due to the presence of an obstacle, marking occurs in simulation mode (laser

off) because the ENABLE signal is not active. The operator can stop the simulated marking by pressing

the STOP button and repeat the procedure after removing the obstacle.

The safety door is connected to the motor controlling its movement by means of a coupling mechanism

that is usually engaged.

To disable automatic operation

Figure 11 – Door engaged to motor

1. Open the safety door completely.

2. Loosen the knob shown in the figure.

3. Move the coupling mechanism in the direction of the arrow.

4. Tight the knob to fix the position.

Figure 12 – Door unhooked from motor

To re-enable automatic operation

1. Open the safety door completely.

2. Loosen the knob shown in Figure 11.

3. Move the coupling mechanism to re-engage the door.

4. Tight the knob to fix the position.

In case of malfunction of the motorized door

1. Press the emergency pushbutton.

2. Raise the emergency pushbutton.

3. The generation of the emergency resets the entire machine, including the mechanism of the

motorized door.

4. Proceed with restoring the emergency condition (see “Emergency Recovery” on page 52).

Door motor protection

The door motor is protected against overloads by a mechanism of its control unit that automatically

stops the motor if something interferes with the movement (for example an arm inadvertently resting on

the handle).

Machine operation

Arex / Vlase During the normal operating cycle of the machine (i.e. considering the connection, laser ignition and

general configuration procedures as well as the focusing procedure, described in more detail in the laser

source manual and later in this manual as already executed), to begin marking on one piece you must

proceed as follows:

1. If not done before, press the main switch located on the back of the machine (Figure 5).

2. Press the RIPRISTINO (“Restore”, “7” in Figure 6) push-button.

3. Wait for the laser marking head’s control system boot: the status LED of the control panel (“1”

in Figure 6) and the LED bar located on the marking head (see “1” in Figure 3) blink in green.

4. When boot has been completed, the status LED’s become steady green.

5. Rotate the key-operated KEY switch (“4” in Figure 6) to bring it in position “1”.

6. The status LED of the control panel and the LED bar located on the marking head blink in

orange for around twenty seconds while the laser warms up. At the end of the warm up phase,

they become steady on (orange).

7. Rotate the ENABLE selector (“3” in Figure 6) to bring it in position “1”.

8. Place the piece on the work plane.

9. Manually close the movable door (Figure 8) in case of manually operated door.

10. If the movable door has been manually closed, the status LED of the control panel and the LED

bar located on the marking head become steady red to indicate that the laser is ready to mark.

The red lamp located on the machine top turns on.

Note. In case of repeated markings, the ENABLE selector must be left in position “1”: the safety system

of the machine is based on the open/close condition of the movable door. When the door is open, the

condition of the internal “enable” signals disables the laser.

11. Press the START pushbutton (“5” in Figure 6) to restart marking (this pushbutton only works

when the machine is in automatic mode). With the motorized movable door, pressing the

START pushbutton closes the door.

This enables the laser and generates the changes in the signals indicated in step 10. above for a

manually operated door.

12. The red lamp of the led tower light flashes and the red lamp of the STOP pushbutton (“6” in

Figure 6) turns on to notify that the laser is working (marking in progress).

13. The lamp of the STOP pushbutton stays on until the end of the marking.

14. At the end of the marking, the lamp of the led tower light and the red lamp of the STOP

pushbutton switch off and the movable door opens (versions with motorized door).

15. It is now possible to open the movable door (versions with manually operated door).

16. The red lamp located on the machine top switches off to indicate that the laser is disabled.

17. The operator can retrieve the processed piece and load the new piece.

Note. Opening the movable door and/or pressing the emergency button (“10” in Figure 6) immediately

interrupt the marking process. If the movable door is opened, the laser is disabled because the internal

enable signals fall. If the emergency button is pressed, the laser is switched off by the interlock circuit

(in compliance with the requirements of the 60825-1 standard) and the warm-up procedure must be

repeated.

After pressing the emergency button, the response time from laser full emission to zero emission

is ≤ 5 ms.

Uniq During the normal operating cycle of the machine (i.e. considering the connection, laser ignition and

general configuration procedures as well as the focusing procedure, described in more detail in the laser

source manual and later in this manual as already executed), to begin marking on one piece you must

proceed as follows:

1. Check the emergency mushroom push button.

2. Press the RIPRISTINO (“Restore”, “3” in Figure 7) push-button.

3. Place the piece on the work plane (as shown in Figure 10).

4. Manually close the movable door (Figure 8) in case of manually operated door.

5. If not done before, bring the ENABLE selector (Figure 7) in position “1” to enable the laser

beam. The red lamp turns on in case of manually operated movable door.

Note. In case of repeated markings, the ENABLE selector must be left in position “1”: the safety system

of the machine is based on the congruity of the states of the movable door and of the shutter covering

the laser beam emission slit. The movable door can only be opened if the shutter physically prevents the

laser beam propagation.

6. Press the START pushbutton (“1” in Figure 7) to start marking. With the motorized movable

door, pressing the START pushbutton closes the door.

This enables the laser and generates the changes in the signals indicated in step 5. above for a

manually operated door.

7. The red lamp on the machine top starts blinking to notify that the laser is working (marking in

progress).

8. The red lamp of the STOP pushbutton (Figure 7) turns on too.

9. The red lamp will keep blinking and the lamp of the STOP pushbutton will stay on until the end

of the marking.

10. At marking completion, the red lamp will stop blinking and will be steady on and the lamp of

the STOP pushbutton will switch off and the movable door will open (versions with motorized

door).

11. It is now possible to open the movable door (versions with manually operated door).

12. The red lamp located on the machine top switches off to indicate that the shutter is covering the

laser beam.

13. The operator can retrieve the processed piece and load the new piece.

Note. Opening the movable door and/or pressing the emergency button (Figure 7) immediately interrupt

the marking process.

After pressing the emergency button, the response time from laser full emission to zero emission is ≤ 5

ms.

Note. Using the machine as indicated above and with the safety measures integrated in the machine

itself, allow to operate in Class 1.

Pag. 27

Marking safety Using the machine in the way described above and with the door closed during the marking process

allows operating in CLASS 1.

W A R N I N G Since the Arex / Vlase marking heads do not have an internal shutter covering the laser emission slit when the movable door is open (as required by the EN 60825-1 standard), nor opening the movable door switches off the laser beam through the interlock connector (as required alternatively by the EN 60825-1 standard), remains a residual risk during the loading and unloading operations of the workpiece.

The operator must therefore use the PPE (Personal protective equipment) required for operating a Class 4 laser, as described below.

Excluding the safety door The machine features a key-operated selector identified as ESCL. PORTA (see “8” in Figure 6 on page

16 and “6” in Figure 7 on page 17).

This selector has a normal operation position when set to “0”: in this position, it is possible to remove

the key in order to prevent uncontrolled changes in the operational mode.

In order to perform some marking setup procedures otherwise not possible, the selector can be rotated

in position “1” to temporarily exclude the safety checks based on the position of the movable door.

W A R N I N G Using the machine excluding the door corresponds to operating a Class 4 laser device.

W A R N I N G In order to operate in this way, the customer must adopt all the operational procedures and protection systems that altogether ensure the same level of safety for the operator guaranteed by the movable door.

W A R N I N G When operating with the safety door open, the operator MUST NOT, for any reason, put his hands or head under the laser head during the marking process.

Page 30: Laser Marking System - Delta Visione · 2018-04-06 · scattered laser radiation protection glass 2. Z axis for vertical positioning of the laser head 3. Datalogic laser marking head

DV-Safetybox – Use and maintenance manual

Pag. 28

Personal protective equipment 1. The operator must strictly use glasses with certified laser anti-radiation filters.

2. The operator must use appropriate protective clothing against the risk of fire caused by reflected

and/or scattered laser beams.

3. The operator must use protective gloves against laser radiation (burns, injuries).

4. All persons present near the machine must be equipped with the same individual protective

equipment as in points 1 and 2. or they must be moved away from the machine (see the next

paragraph).

Positioning the machine 1. When operating with the movable door open, it is absolutely necessary to prevent the reflected

or scattered laser beam from reaching people or things with the risk of personal injury and the

risk of triggering fires of clothing and inflammable objects / substances.

2. The machine must therefore be placed in a closed room exclusively dedicated for these

operations or in a cubicle made up of shields against reflected and / or scattered laser beams.

3. The room or the space enclosed by protective screens must be equipped with all the hazard

warning signs for laser radiation.

4. Entrance to the room or cubicle must be authorized by the responsible laser technician (after the

individual protective devices mentioned in the preceding paragraph have been adopted).

Operation with door exclusion The operation of the machine, after all the safety measures listed above have been taken, is

The operation of the machine, after having adopted all the safety measures listed above, is quite

similar to that described in the previous paragraph, excluding the opening and closing of the movable

door (using the START button is optional as all machine operations can be controlled using control

software commands).

1. Place the piece on the work plane.

2. The operational mode can be selected using the ENABLE selector:

a. With ENABLE in position “0” only the aiming laser beam is enabled (Class 2) – the

red lamp is off.

b. With ENABLE in position “1” the Class 4 marking laser is enabled. The red lamp of

the tower light is steady on (UNIQ only).

3. Perform the marking setup operations and/or the focusing operations using the marking control

software.

4. The red lamp of the STOP pushbutton (Figure 6) lights up during the stages in which the Class

4 laser is operational. The red lamp (UNIQ only) and the button lamp remain off if you are

searching for the correct focus using only the Class 2 aiming laser (ENABLE in position “0”).

5. During the marking stages (with ENABLE in position “1” and red lamp on machine top

flashing) never introduce hands or objects on the laser beam trajectory or inside the work space

of the machine.

6. At the end of the marking, the STOP button lamp and the red lamp on machine top will turn off

(the red lamp on the machine will stay lit (UNIQ only) if ENABLE is in position "1") and you

can remove the processed part and check the result of the test.

Pag. 29

W A R N I N G The emergency button of the front control panel is operational and, if pressed, it is possible to turn off the laser (via a safety interlock circuit complying with the EN60825-1 standard) and stop any movement of the machine.

The full to zero laser emission response time is ≤ 5ms.

4 Residual risks

The risk analysis performed according to Attachment I of the 2006 / 42 CE Directive has detected the

following residual risks:

• RISK OF ELECTRICAL NATURE due to the presence of live elements inside the enclosure

of the electrical equipment (control box and engine box). Before connecting to the mains, make

sure that maintenance work is not carried out on the marking station.

• RISK OF CUTTING AND/OR CRUSHING: this risk is present during the parts load/unload

operations. The operator must therefore wear adequate personal protection equipment and avoid

interposing the hands between part and bench.

• NOISE: the machine has been designed in such a way as to reduce to a minimum the sound

emissions during the marking process.

According to the indications of § u) of EHSR 1.7.4.2. of Annex I of Directive 2006/42/CE, the

noise emission of the machine is lower than 70dB(A).

• LASER: During normal operation and with the movable door closed, the laser system is in

CLASS 1 and there is no risk to the operator. Refer to "Excluding the safety door" on page 27

for procedures and warnings for use with the ESCL. PORTA key-operated selector in position

"1" and the notes in the "Marking safety" section on page 27 for details on the residual risks

related to laser sources.

Residual risks of the Safetybox 9 XY DV Marking System

EHSR TITLE Notes

1.1.2 Principles of safety integration The machine has been designed for automatic use with manual loading / unloading of the part. Maintenance operations must be carried out with the machine switched off. For special marking set up operations that require operating with the safety door open, the customer must put in place all the alternative safety measures described in the instruction manual.

The machine is equipped with an intake duct that must be connected to an external suction system prior to its commissioning.

1.3.1 Risk of loss of stability The machine has been designed to be placed on a work surface of adequate height, stability and capacity. When these conditions are met, the machine has a stability that prevents its overturning or falling.

1.4.2.2 Interlocking movable guards During normal use, the interlocked movable cover prevents access to the work area and protect from useful, reflected and scattered laser radiations. The interlocked movable door has a safety window with a special anti-radiation glass (3.2 mm acrylic, optic class 1) whose certified security levels are listed on the label on the bottom right corner of the window and in the instruction manual.

The interlocked movable door can be excluded via a key-operated selector (whose key can be removed when in position 0, i.e. with safety measures enabled). It is possible to exclude the interlocked door for special marking setup operations that are not otherwise feasible: in this case the customer must implement all the alternative safety measures described in the instruction manual.

1.5.12 Laser radiation During normal use, all useful, reflected and scattered laser radiations cannot reach the operator or any other person near the machine.

During the special marking setup operations that require operating the machine with the safety door open, the notes of the previous points 1.1.2 – 1.4.2.2 – 1.5.12 are valid.
