Established the Institute of theBrothers of the Christian Schools in 1680 in response to the needsof his time, invitations to assistwith teaching the children ofthe poor and working class,and giving up his wealth tolive in solidarity with thosewith whom he served.

De La Salle wrotenumerous texts onmatters of spirituality,education, and teachertraining: includingMeditations for the Time of Retreat, The Conduct ofSchools, The Rules of ChristianDecorum and Civility, and Methodof Interior Prayer.

The contemporary expression of the Catholic Lasallian Heritageand Mission includes approximately 960,000 students, 4,000

Christian Brothers, and 89,000 Lay Partners in 80 countries.
