Minutes of the August 23, 2016 meeting of Las Arañas at Raymond Sanchez Community Center

The meeting was called to order at 9:30 a.m. by President, Chris Allen. Welcome Program Speaker: Joan Ruane on New Zealand 2015 New Members/Visitors: New Members were Rene Pelner, a knitter who wants to learn how to spin and Kristen Lundberg a weaver who joined in April but is attending her first meeting.. Visitor was Aric Chepito a pueblo weaver for 23 years from Zuni. Approval of Minutes: Minutes of the July 28, 2016 meeting published in the August 2016 newsletter were approved. Treasurer’s Report (Tina Martin): As of 8/23/2016 the Guild has: General funds - $17,768.51, Dyebook - $4,759.90, Jodie Aves Scholarship - $5,781.50, and Mary Colton Scholarship - $635.00 for a total of $28,944.91. Tina said we’re doing well as we’re on budget and ‘in the black’. The Guild received a thank you letter from Handweavers Guild of America for the donation of $50.00. Sheep to Shawl (Ruth Ronan/Becky Arnold): . Sign-up sheets are laid out on the tables in the next room, and there are still empty slots. There are enough people now for the move of equipment from storage to the fairgrounds. Parking passes at the Barber’s Col-lege across from Gate 6 are available today at break, and a short description of the rules as well as hints for access was provided. Sandy reminded everyone working Creative Arts to call the manager at the dairy barn to check-in if you have parked in General Parking and not gone by the dairy barn first. Ruth said the phone number is in and working. Sandy reiterated the 2 step admission process of exchanging passes for a ticket if you enter through the general parking gate. Those volunteering at the dairy barn are to sign-in when they arrive for each shift and should wear either their Las Arañas badge or a ‘stick-on’ name tag, Workshops & Programs: The Joanne Tallarovic workshop on Profile Drafting will be rescheduled for early October while the workshop on Fiber Prep, Blending remains at the end of October. Fiber Arts Fiesta (Sandy Gale) The dates are May 19-21, 2017. The call for entries can now be found on the Fiber Arts Council website. Deadline for entries is March 1, 2017. There is prize money associated with the entries. Las Arañas commitment is $1,150 which is due December 31, 2016. Anyone (or any group) who wants to sponsor a prize should contact Sandy prior to that time. Don’t forget to start providing the small donations for the charity table in the basket which will be at each meeting until May. Besides show entries, the Fiber Arts Council will also be looking for proposals for classes of 2-3 hours each in the near future. Outreach (Diane Witt): Diane provided a summary of what the Guild has supported this summer. There is a request for spinners at Casa San Ysidro October 15 & 16 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. during the Corrales Fall Harvest Festival, and there are still a few openings for spinners at the Rail Yards Market 9:30 to 2:30 on October 9th and 23rd. Camille Segretto Project (Maura Stone): Maura reminded people that there is a box in the library for donations as well as fiber that can be used to knit scarves or shawls which should not be wool due to potential allergies. Historian: (Mary Moore): Mary looked at 1972 and 1992. In 1972 there were 55 mem-bers, In 1992 there were 95. Dues in 1972 were $4.00 versus $18.00 in 1992, and the Guild assets were $100 versus $13,000. in 1972 meetings were generally held in members’ homes with workshops provided by members while in 1992 it was at the Albuquerque Garden Center with workshops by often nationally known outsiders at an average cost of $30.00 per day. General note, meetings were in members’ homes into the late ‘80’s, and when they switched to outside venues, the cost was by separate contribution rather than from the Guild budget. Study Groups: Most of the reports will appear elsewhere in the newsletter. Tapestry Group next meeting is Wednesday, October 5th at the Open Space Visitors Center from 3-4:30 p.m. They are also working with Judy Larson to arrange a non-show time viewing of the current exhibit at the Albuquerque Little Theater. Announcements: On September 3rd & 4th, there will be a Heart of New Mexico Fiber Gathering as a benefit at Wildlife West Nature Park and Animal Rescue in Edgewood. Spin-zilla is the first full week in October. Continued on page 3 —>

Kelly Stewart & Kenny Nix have moved their Gallery/Studio—Sacramento Mountain Weavers—to the east mountains located in Cedar Crest on HWY 14 “The Turquoise Trail” between Sandia Artisans gallery and Moonlight Realty. They write: we are excited about our move, and about going back to our mountain roots! We are still doing what we do, a working weaving studio, along with representing other fine New Mexico artists in our Gallery. There is a lot happening in our guild as well as the fiber community to keep us very busy and involved. It can be hard to think about an event 9 months in the future but planning ahead is what will produce a great event. If you have never submitted an entry to Fiber Arts Fiesta, maybe this should be the year for you to take that next step. The Call for Entry requirements are posted at www.fiberartsfiesta.org. Look them over. There are lots of categories so you can pick the best fit for you. The deadline for submis-sion is March 1, 2017. That is only 6 months away. For those who do enter there is the possi-bility of a ribbon or even a cash award. Our guild is committed to $1,150 in award monies. Of course we would love to have sponsors for these awards so that it doesn’t have to come out of our bank account. The following is the list of award categories. If you, as an individual or together in a group, would like to contribute, a check with a notation can be made out to Las

Aran ᷉as.

Best of Show $150 Judges Choice x 2 $50 each Special Merit x 2 $50 each W101 Woven Yardage $100 (1st) W102 Wearable $100 (1st) W103 Wearable Accessories$100 (1st) W104 Functional $100 (1st) W105 Non-Functional $100 (1st) W106 Small Format $100 (1st) W107 Handspun in a Complete Piece $100 (1st) W107 Handspun Skein on Wheel $50 (1st) W109 Handspun Skein on Drop Spindle $50 (1st)

For those of you interested in teaching a class during the Fiesta, the official deadline was August 31, but applications may still be considered. Contact Sandy Gale for an appli-cation form. Posting of class offerings for en-rollment will be on www.fiberartsfiesta.org beginning in January. And last but not least, don’t forget to gear up your creativity and fingers to produce “do-daws” for contribution to the Susan’s legacy charity drive. The white picnic basket will be waiting for those little plastic bags with hand-made items at the next guild meeting. If you have questions about any of the above, please contact Sandy Gale,

[email protected] or 263-5624.

PARKING Cont.

etc., you can drive in to gate 6 (go North on San Pedro) and tell the at-tendant that you need to deliver equipment. They should let you in, park in front of the Dairy barn, drop off your equipment and then go park in the Barber College lot. When walk-ing from your car, generally you can cross San Pedro directly to gate 6. There is a rope down the center of the street where you can pause for traffic. If a cop happens to be there, ask him if you can cross there. He may stop traffic for you or (if he got up on the wrong side of the bed that morning) may require you to go to the light at Lomas and cross—that is rare. In the afternoon the cops are of-ten running radar checks for traffic coming north on San Pedro. If you walk to the north side of the entry & exit area (toward Lomas) and cross San Pedro there, the cops will usually not even notice you. NOTE: If you need to enter the Fair at Gate 6 on the first day of the fair, there will usually be a long line of trucks and trailers with animals enter-ing that gate. So get in the left lane to the gate entrance. If you need to go north on San Pedro in the morning on the first Sat-urday (Sept. 9), avoid Central Ave. because of the parade. Go south past Central on some other street, then get on San Pedro and go north. If you plan to stay late (after 6 PM) for the Fair and wish to leave your car at the Barber College, talk to them when you park. They are con-sidering charging the public $10 to park but if you tell them you are Sheep to Shawl, they may give you a discount. If you leave your car there late and don’t talk to them, they may have it towed! If you are only working at the Creative Arts building, you may want to come in gate 8 on Louisiana and park in the infield. Be aware that there are no left turns at that point on Lou-isiana so you will need to be driving north on Louisiana at Lomas.

They may want you to move your car. (If you need to leave the Fair grounds to move your car—tell the gate people you need to get something from your car and will return. STS Dyeing Linda DeBlois or Denise Davis will be manning the Dyepot each day. They will assign tasks to those helping. You might want to bring an apron and/or wear cloths that will not be ruined if dye splatters.

STS Shop Regina Hoefler and Marsha Julian will be the Cashiers at the Shop. When you are on duty, please wear a shop apron and be available to help customers, make sugges-tions and find items they may be interest in. When customers are in the shop you should not be sitting in a chair, knitting, talking, etc. Be aware of what is going on and let the customer know you are there. This should cut down on shop lifting. (We don’t have a lot but it does occur.)

STS SPINNING We are again spinning under the tent in front of the dairy barn. You will need to bring your wheel or spindle and fiber to spin. You may be able to bring your wheel when you bring in inventory—there is some space in the storage area but it is limited.

STS Passes If you are a consignor or are working to set up the STS shop and work area and were not able to pick up your passes at the meeting on August 23, Ruth will have them for you at the STS shop on September 7 & 8.

CREATIVE ARTS BLDG The Creative Arts Building is near the middle of the main fair grounds on Heritage Ave just off Main Street. It is across from the south side of the Manuel Lujan Jr. Ex-hibit Complex. When you enter the Creative Arts Building, look to your left. That is the Home Arts side of the building. Our display is toward the back of Home Arts near all the glass display cases with fiber entries. There will be signage. Check-In: The Sheep to Shawl manager of the day is at the main exhibit in the Dairy Barn. If you park in the Barber College, stop at

the Dairy Barn and sign-in before walking down to the Creative Arts Building. If you park in the public parking area, you can go straight to the Creative Arts Building and use your cell phone to check in. (The phone number to call is 383-9860.) Demonstration area: Because our demonstrations are only in the afternoon, when you arrive the tables will be draped and the small looms in covered bins under the tables. You will need to uncover the tables and set out the looms. At the end of the day, the looms will need to be packed up again and the tables recovered. There will be additional display information for you at the exhibit. You do not need to bring any weaving supplies with you. Everything you need should be there. If you have a name tag, wear it. Because all shifts will have 2 volunteers, you can alternate breaks. We will have chairs. There are bathrooms in the building. Fair food is eas-ily purchased. Sandy Gale will be there most days.

STS ETC. Bring your favorite small fiber craft to demonstrate. Show Weaving on different looms, Knotting, Colcha Embroidery, Braiding, Knitting, Crochet, Needle Felting, and any other fiber activity that you find interesting and wish to share with others. You also may want to help kids weave on the cardboard looms at the table—tell them that we sell the loom kits in the shop.

STS WEAVING For all weaving, you need to bring your own weft, shuttle(s), bobbins, scis-sors, etc. There will be T-pins and weights available for broken warp threads and some yarn from previous years will be available if you run out. You can always bring a pillow if you don’t like the hard bench. Copies of the various pedaling in-structions will be available at the looms. Please mark the beginning and ending of your weaving with your name so we can give you your weaving when the cloth is cut off the loom. The 8-Harness loom is warped with 5/2 perle cotton at 20epi. The 4-Harness loom 1 is warped with 3/8 sport weight wool for a twill weave.
