Lantmäteriet’s activities cover

many areas but they all share

one common denominator:

everything is linked in one

way or another to location. We

know all there is to know about

Sweden’s geography and

properties: we map reality,

set boundaries and keep track

of who owns what.

#We map reality

With the help of data from our national ele-vation model, Sweden’s municipalities and county administrative boards are better able to produce data for risk assessment and plan-ning in readiness for future climate change. The companies that build new roads, bridges and railways can rationalise their work by using modern measuring technology linked to our support system for satellite positioning, Swepos. We also ensure you get the right information when you do a map search in your smart phone.

Our geodata is being made availableLantmäteriet now offers free access to some of our geodata since we believe this is of benefit to so-ciety. It started off with the digital overview map and a simplified elevation model in the summer of 2015. Since then, we have also released Vägkar-tan (Road Map), Terrängkartan (Terrain Map), Fjällkartan (Mountain Map) and a nationwide real-time service for measuring and positioning with accuracy down to one metre. These initiatives have been very well received. The open data have been very much in demand

An essential part of society is to have fundamental and up to date information on topography, infrastructure and properties - that is to say, geodata. This is needed to facilitate efficient planning and development of society. Lantmäteriet provides

society with such information.

used as a basis för map production

”We would like to see more youth using maps and game-based learning. The fact

that you can now load the whole of Sweden into Minecraft also opens up for more

possibilities in society. Public authorities and companies have become aware of how games can be used, quickly and easily, to create three-dimensional environments.”

by, for instance, app developers and others who need map data to develop commercial services and products. Our ambition is to be able to release more infor-mation eventually but for that, policy decisions and a financing model are needed.

3-D maps and elevation modelThe next generation of maps will be three-di-mensional. Lantmäteriet is in the process of building up a nationwide landscape model in 3-D. We already have an elevation model, map

data, aerial photographs and the tools needed to create a national product but we also need a process for the continuous updating of infor-mation in 3-D and the development of the IT systems and this takes some time to achieve. Our goal is that a national 3-D model with data from Lantmäteriet and other public authorities and municipalities will be in everyone’s mobile phone in approximately five years’ time.

December 2015, Sweden was launched for use in the Minecraft environment

#We set boundaries

All land in Sweden is divided into properties, like a huge jigsaw puzzle. We know where the boundaries are.

Through cadastral procedures, we change properties or create new ones.Lantmäteriet also helps to resolve issues relating to land access for infrastructure

projects such as the building of new roads or when broadband cables are to be laid.

Lantmäteriet helps to realise people’s dreams of attractive accommodation by dividing up or merging plots of land. Another type of land survey procedure is to establish the rights that are linked to a property, for example, ease-ments. Sometimes it can simply be a matter of cla-rifying where a property’s boundaries are.

Lantmäteriet had to do a lot of that after the big forest fire in Västmanland where many pro-perty boundaries were destroyed and had to be re-established.

BroadbandOne of Sweden’s goals is to give all residents and companies access to high capacity broad-

All over the country, infrastructure is being built for broadband. Village

networks, increased density of masts, broadband for long, strategic distances, and urban networks are some examples

of such expansions. The target set by the government is that 90 percent shall have 100 Mbit/s by 2020. Currently, about 54

percent of the population have access to that.

band. Lantmäteriet has been tasked by the go-vernment to investigate any problems linked to the expansion of broadband infrastructure. This has resulted in, for instance, a little ma-nual with an overview of how the whole pro-cess should be done. Many right-holders and properties will be affected when broadband is to be laid. The important thing for the broad-

band companies is that they can secure long-term rights to cables or masts and this can be achieved, for instance, by Lantmäteriet cre-ating a cable right. If a number of individual property owners want to collaborate to fulfil a common need, such as broadband, we can help them to form a joint property association.

Lantmäteriet ensures that owning a property in Sweden is safe. A person who buys a proper-ty must apply to us for a title deed and is then entered as the new owner of the property in the property register. The information in the property register is fundamental for society and market economy. Banks and brokers are examples of people who benefit greatly from the data in the register, for instance, when the right owner is to be identified/verified prior to the granting of credit or a property deal. A pro-perty can be mortgaged or pledged when you need to borrow money from a bank. Then the

property will be mortgaged. Lantmäteriet deci-des and enters the amount that the mortgage is to have in the property register and issues a mortgage deed as proof. The mortgage deed can then be used as security for a bank loan.

E-service for professionalsProfessional submitters at banks, brokers or law offices can use our e-service to apply for title deeds, site leaseholds, mortgaging or the cancellation of digital mortgage deeds. This makes their work more efficient.

#We secure ownership

Lantmäteriet’s property register covers all of Sweden’s 3.2 million properties. The register includes data about owners, title deeds and taxation values.

We know who owns what.

Today, 88 professional submitters are connected to the registration e-service. These comprise banks, brokers and law

offices. In total, the service has about 4,500 users. Around 25 percent of all applications received by the Land Registration Division

are now digital.

Our knowledge is in demand

abroad

Our strategic aim is to contribute towards figh-ting poverty and supporting economic develop-ment in our partner countries. Prioritised areas are:• Democracy and human rights• Environment and climate change• Gender equality

The services that are asked for extend across the entire spectrum of Lantmäteriet’s activities, for

example, IT support, property systems, infra-structure for geodata and management issues. Some examples of countries where we have on-going projects are Bosnia-Herzegovina, Botswa-na, Georgia and Kosovo. One large project in the Balkans, called Impuls, includes eight land sur-vey organisations from six countries. The aim of the project is to build up a common infrastructu-re for geodata.

We also export our services, primarily through cooperation with sister public authorities in countries that receive aid from Sweden, through financing via the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).

Lantmäteriet was involved in projects cooperra-tion and pilot studies in 12 countries during 2015.

A FEW FACTS ABOUT WHAT WE DO

▪ Lantmäteriet’s revenues in 2015 amounted to SEK 1,769 million.

▪ 70 percent of the income came from fees and other sources,

with the remainder being financed by funding.

▪ We have around 2,000 employees in 50 locations.

▪ Three divisions are responsible for Cadastral Services, Land

Registration and Land and Geographic Information (geodata).

▪ We completed 13,017 cadastral procedures during 2015. We

made decisions on 841,475 registration transactions, domina-

ted by registrations of title deeds and mortgages. The total

mortgage amount was SEK 4.7 billion. The total taxation value

of Sweden’s properties was SEK 7.6 billion.

▪ We took aerial photographs of approximately 169,300 square

kilometres of Sweden’s surface during 2015, corresponding to

around 35 percent of the total area. 95 percent of Sweden’s

area has been laser-scanned in order to acquire data for a new

elevation model of the country.
