The LANTERN MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Happy New Year to everyone. I hope you had a good holiday. Hope January passes us by without a repeat of the surprise storm of last January 26 where some people took 8 to 10 hours to get home and others slept in their cars. The storm last Saturday reminded us that winter is still here. The Dunn Loring Woods Neighborhood Watch Program is a good way to keep our community safe. DLW is relatively free of crime although we have had a few incidents in the area in the past few weeks. See article on page 2 to help out with this program. Tax season is here and you can get free help with tax returns and electronic filing right here in Vienna. See page 4. Stay warm. NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH PROGRAM

Mark Hann, the DLW Neighborhood Watchcoordinator, desperately needs volunteers tohelp in the program. This program is mostimportant to the safety and well being of ourcommunity and takes little time and effort.Volunteers will not get involved in anyobserved suspicious activity but will contactthe police for appropriate action.Fortunately, DLW is relatively free of crimeand what does occur is generally of arelatively minor nature. There were someinstances in the past month in theneighborhood of Cottage Street. However, the presence of a vehicle with the magnetizedneighborhood watch sign on it can be aneffective deterrent. Please contact Mark at703-489-9463 or 703-641-9544 to volunteer.Let’s all do our part to help Mark keep ourcommunity safe.

TIPS FOR SURVIVING A BAD WINTER

A little patience and a cooperative attitude areessential ingredients for getting through thewinter plowing season.

Residents may find it less frustrating to

wait until the plow trucks have completed theirstreet before cleaning the end of their driveway.Plow trucks are designed to discharge snow tothe sides of the road and are not capable of skipping driveway areas down the street.

Residents areencouraged to"adopt a firehydrant" neartheir home andkeep snow

shoveled awayfrom it. Thiswill ensure thathydrants are

accessible in case of an emergency. Rememberthat spring is less than two months from nowand the community yard sale is coming up inMay.
