FOCUS ON SOLAR ENERGY - MEETING FUTURE DEMAND

Sri Lanka is blessed with several forms of energy resources in particular, biomass, hydro and solar and as such will focus on renewable energy to meet future growth. Sri Lanka’s new government targets 100 percent clean indigenous energy to develop the island as a green country while importing fossil fuel, an official from the Ministry of Power and Energy said.

“We want to develop the country but it has to be more green and environment friendly development,” Suren Batagoda, secretary, Ministry of Power and Energy said at a United Nation forum held in Colombo to discuss UN’s Millennium Development Goals.

Minister of Power and Energy Patali Champika Ranawaka says that Sri Lanka will halt the importation of gas and fuel from foreign countries by the year 2020. Sri Lanka has taken giant strides towards a solar future with the announcement this week that the country’s Board of Investment (BOI) has concluded talks with an Australian energy company to develop a 150 MW solar module manufacturing plant on the island further solidifying Sri Lanka as a Major business destination for investment in Solar Power & Renewable Energy.

MARKET UPDATE : ENERGY SECTOR IN SRI LANKA

Sri Lanka is set to host its first International efficient energy, storage & grid technolo-gies exhibition and conference – LankaSolar’16 from 12-15 August 2016 at the Sri Lanka Exhibition & Convention Centre, Colombo. After a period of instability Sri Lanka has rebounded and has emerged as one of the fastest growing economy in the region in recent years. With its economy growing at 7% over the past few years, the country is poised to see sustained growth. Backed by a stable and committed Gov-ernment which has introduced a number of forward thinking policies, Sri Lanka is among the next best key investment and business destinations.

As such, the Government has prioritised power generation and electrification projects to support national development and improve quality of life. This is apparent as electricity supply to household covers only about 25 % of the population. With the increasing demand for energy to provide for the country’s economic and social development, total primary energy demand is expected to increase to about 15,000 kTOE by the year 2020. Electricity and petroleum sub-sectors are likely to record higher annual growth rates of about 7-8%. Commercial energy utilities are required to be further strengthened to improve their financial viability and service quality. The involvement of the country’s population in the investment, operation, regulation and delivery of energy services needs to be increased. LANKASOLAR ‘16 will create a greater platform to ensure manufacturers, urban and utilities Governors, project engineers, suppliers and technical experts connect and network with the industry players and anyone involved in solar energy products, energy storage equipment and new energy systems in Sri Lanka. GENERATING SUSTAINABLE BUSINESSES

• Energy demand is expected to increase to about 15,000 kTOE by the year 2020• Electricity and petroleum sub-sectors are likely to record higher annual growth rates of about 7-8%. • Hydro electricity production and biomass-based energy supplies are the only large-scale indigenous primary energy resources available in Sri Lanka.• Future energy demand will be met by imported fossil fuels in the medium term. In the longer term, possible development of indigenous petroleum resources and accelerated development of non-conventional renewable energy are likely to make a significant change in Sri Lanka’s mix of primary energy resources.• Hydroelectricity is the oldest and most dependant source of electricity generation in Sri Lanka, taking a share of nearly 48% of the total available grid capacity in December 2012, and 27.9% of power generated in 2012. • The Hambantota Wind Farm is the first wind farm wind to be commissioned in Sri Lanka. The farm is located along south-eastern coast of Hambantota, and consists of five NEG Micon M1500-600 wind turbines of 600KW each. With a total installed capacity of 3 MW, the wind farm generates up to approximately 4,500 MWh of power annually.
