FOUNDATION

ONE HUNDRED DAYS OF SCHOOL This week was an exciting week in the Foundation level. We had made it to 100 days of school! As part of our celebration the students collected 100 things to bring. There were pasta shells, footy cards, buttons, coins, cotton buds and even goggly eyes. These collections were counted and used for a variety of Mathematics activities during our celebration week. On Thursday 2nd August all the Foundation classes celebrated with a number party. The students and teachers dressed up in the number theme and revelled in a classroom festivities. The students even took part in 100 day activities rotating through the five classrooms. They participated in number games, such as race to 100, with Mrs Byrne, made 100 day crowns with Miss Exner, read a jelly bean story and counted and coloured groups of ten to 100 with Miss Angell, made a paper chain of 100 links with Mrs Corrales and built with 100 things, such as 100 plastic cups, animals and Lego with Mrs Dempsey. Some of the students’ thoughts about the day: “I loved having the party food and having a play in Mrs Dempsey’s class. I liked dressing up with numbers.” – Emma F1 “I loved doing the activities.” – Lily F2 “I liked the jelly bean story with Miss Angell. “ – Seth F3 “Counting to 100 was my favourite part of the day.” – Chase F4 “I used the cups to make a tower and my favourite part was smashing it down.” – Thomas F13

It was an amazing day had by all!

YEAR ONE

MANDARIN MATHS Last week the Year 1’s explored and investigated the humble mandarin and who would have thought there would be so much mathematical learning! The Year 1’s had great fun measuring themselves with mandarins and finding out who had the longest peel. Our math discussions and learning were on comparing size, measuring with formal and informal units, estimating and graphing. The students guided the investigations through the questions they asked and we found that our estimation skills improved! Some of our questions were: How much do they weigh? How many segments are in each mandarin? Are they all the same? How long am I in mandarins? How long is a mandarin peel? What is the smallest peel I can make?

When trying to make the longest peel students tried different ways to make their peel the longest! Many students chose to work out how long their mandarin peel was by using a ruler and recording in centimetres. First students had to estimate their length and one estimate was 30 rulers, the question then became, how long would that make your peel when the ruler is 30cm long?

Some words from the Year 1’s………… I had extraordinary fun doing mandarin maths. I thought it was interesting when Tameka’s smaller mandarin had more segments than Arlia’s because I always thought the larger mandarin had more. Josie 1/28 I liked making the longest peel trail because I like it when you stretch it and how you measure it with a ruler because rulers tell you the numbers it goes up to. Ashleigh 1/28 I really enjoyed guessing how many segments were in a mandarin and then finding out how many were actually in the mandarin because then we got to measure how long our segments were when put together. I also learnt how to use a ruler. Hamish 1/17 I really liked measuring the peel and making the longest line because it was fun. I also found it interesting that I could measure things with mandarins! Jesse 1/15 I found it interesting that I had the longest mandarin peel for 2 days out of the whole class. I measured the peel with my hands. Oliver 1/29

VISUAL ARTS

BOOK WEEK ART As part of our Book Week celebrations each year level has been provided with one of this year’s Children’s Book Council Shortlisted books as inspiration for their various art projects. Each level will read and work with their book over the next couple of weeks. These creative pieces will be on display around the school during Book Week: Monday 13—Friday 17 August for all to enjoy. Here is a sneek peek at the start of this work for some levels; we can not wait to reveal the finished products.

COLLABORATIVE SCULPTURE

Year 4 students have entered a competition to win a Bostik grant for the school using a range

of products. Their artwork has been pieced together to make a group sculpture. Come and

see their creation standing on display outside the art room. Aren’t they in with a great chance!

Mrs Barrett is busy preparing a huge mural for our Library to remember this visit for many years to come. Many classes are reading Gleitzman books in preparation—to say we are excited is an understatement. PREMIERS’ READING CHALLENGE 2018 We have 4 weeks remaining to complete our reading challenge. Students and teachers were rocking to the beat of the LPPS Reading Challenge Rap at our last Assembly!
