Walnut Grove Secondary’ssenior boys basketball teamcaptured the provincial titleSaturday night at the LangleyEvents Centre.by Troy Landrevilleand Howard [email protected]
The chant of “Gator Nation”reverberated through the LangleyEvents Centre on an electrifyingSaturday night.
A sea of green and light greyflooded the LEC’s arena bowlhard court after Walnut GroveSecondary’s Gators won the B.C.senior boys Triple A basketballtitle for the first time in schoolhistory.
In a final that came down tothe final minute-and-a-half, theGators defeated a determinedWhite Rock Christian AcademyWarriors squad 59-53 in front of4,443 fans.
The finish was in stark contrastto last season’s heartbreakingloss to Terry Fox Secondary whenthe Ravens’ Jesse Crookes hit thewinning jumper with 3.4 secondsleft to give the Port Coquitlamschool a dramatic 75-74 victoryand the B.C. title.
There was no denying theGators this year.
Comparing last year to thisyear, Gators head coach GeorgeBergen said, “What doesn’t killya doesn’t hurt ya. It [last year’sloss] didn’t kill us!”
“I just worry about every year,”Bergen added, while the playersand fans hugged at centre court.“We can’t help but look back onlast year, but this is this year.”
“I haven’t had this feeling since1970,” Bergen said, referencingthe championship he won as aplayer with Abbotsford’s MEIEagles.
The score was tied 53-53 with1:24 to go in the ball gamewhen star Grade 11 guard JadonCohee’s basket put the Gatorsahead for good.
“This is the greatest feelingin the world,” said Cohee, whoscored a game-high 22 points andwas picked the tourney MVP.
“This is the best day of all ofour lives.”
The Gators clamped down onthe Warriors over the final min-ute, not allowing a point whileadding four of their own to sealthe title.
Bergen said, with all the excite-ment in the fourth quarter, hisheart rate was “at about 180.”
“Hopefully it’s all okay,” hejoked.

Two party leaders spokein Langley, with thepremier on her way soon.by Matthew [email protected]
Two of the three main con-tenders for the position ofB.C.’s next premier spoke inLangley this week and last.
On Friday, B.C.Conservative leader JohnCummins, who is runningin the Langley riding, talkedabout issues local and provincial at a lunch-time gathering organized by the GreaterLangley Chamber of Commerce.
On Monday, it was the turn of B.C. NDPleader Adrian Dix to do the same.
Cummins fielded questions from the lunch-time crowd that involved oil and pipelinesthrough B.C., as well as transit funding androad pricing.
“I think the problem with TransLink is theaccountability issue,” Cummins said.
He supports the use of the rail line thatgoes through downtown Langley for lightrail for commuters.
As far as tolling, he said different ways of
finding the money for major road projectsshould be found.
He also said that his party is in favour ofsimply scrapping the carbon tax.
Of his chances leading a party that hasbeen polling in third place, Cummins wasoptimistic.
“It’s going to be a tough fight, there’s noquestion about it,” Cummins said.
On Monday, Dix spoke to a slightly largercrowd. Skills training is the party’s top pri-ority, he said to the crowd of mostly smallbusiness owners and managers.
Dix began by talking about how hisparents ran their own small business inVancouver for more than 40 years.
Dix talked about howCanada’s, and B.C.’s, produc-tivity has slipped in recentyears, and how many busi-nesses are looking for skilledworkers and can’t find them.
Improving post-secondaryeducation, including appren-ticeships, is important, Dixsaid. High rates of inequal-ity compared to the rest ofCanada are another key prior-ity, he said.
Speaking about transit, hedidn’t give any specifics butsaid that Langley, with apopulation expected to almost
double in 20 years, will definitely need rapidtransit before 2031.
“We’re going to bring some carbon taxdollars to that discussion,” he said of work-ing with Lower Mainland municipalities.
Asked by an audience member about whathis party could convince them that it is goodfor business, he pointed to the switch fromPST to HST and back again.
“That issue was incompetently managed,”Dix said.
Small businesses need stability, Dixargued. He also promised to leave the smallbusiness tax rate unchanged.

They departed at about 2:15p.m. with what turned out to bean old smoke bomb, the kindsometimes sold with fireworks.

The lockdown ended afterthe item was declared safe, and

Van Herk, whois also a school
liaison officer in the Langleyarea, said the students were alittle distracted but otherwisedid well.

Hey kids. Bored withsummer? Sign up forsummer school.by Heather [email protected]
High school studentshave been able to go tosummer school for dec-ades. Now elementary stu-dents get the chance.
The Langley SchoolDistrict is offering a hand-ful of courses for Grades1-7, starting this summer.
The courses chosen arecore so costs are coveredwith existing budgets.Courses have been sched-
uled in eight elementaryschools spread around thedistrict.
The courses include lit-erary (Grades 1-7), math(Grades 3-7), EnglishLanguage Learning (ELL)and English as a SecondLanguage (ESL) for Grades4-7).

“I want to go to summerschool,” joked Trustee RodRoss.
He said it’s good to seeschool buildings beingsused more.
The courses for youngerkids run July 8-26 duringthe mornings.
The primary coursesare free for B.C. residentstudents but $400 for non-B.C. students and inter-national students.
Assistant superintend-ent Gord Stewart said thedistrict is hoping to breakeven on this new initia-tive. To justify the staffingand resource costs, min-
imum numbers of studentsmust be signed up.
Other districts ask fordeposits with their sum-mer courses so familiesensure their kids get tothe classes. Langley willmonitor attendance for thisfirst summer school foryounger students.
Demand has been grow-ing for secondary sum-mer courses. Last yearmore than 1,100 studentstook classes. To meetdemand, the district hasadded classes at WalnutGrove Secondary, on topof courses at AldergroveCommunity Secondary andLangley Secondary.
There are full credit
courses for Grades 10-12in all the key subjects.Course offerings vary byschool site.
The district has addedpre-calculus 12, founda-tions of math 12, andphys. ed 10 and 11/12.
There are also remed-ial academic courses andcredit and non-creditEnglish Language Learningcourses.
“It used to be kind ofa hammer that was heldover kids,” Trustee AlisonMcVeigh said about sum-mer school.
She said summer schoolhas become an opportun-ity for students to takeadditional courses to be
able to better plan theireducation.
The district is encour-aging online registrationfor the summer coursesbut does allow in-personsign up at the head officein Murrayville.
Registration opens April8 and the district willcancel or tweak coursesdepending on enrolmentsbecause the number ofstudents registered affectsstaffing and resources.
Stewart added that thedistrict plans to notifyfamilies of changes bylate June. Registration isallowed until early July.Courses start in early July.• More at www.langleyadvance.com

Cats and dogs with medical issueswill get help thanks to a generouslocal family.by Matthew [email protected]
The cats and dogs that come to thePatti Dale Animal Shelter in Aldergroveare often in need of a trip to the vet.
Whether their issues are as simple asgetting their shots up to date, or a seriousas severe injuries, vet bills can add upquickly.
This month, the shelter and the LangleyAnimal Protection Society that runs it gota big boost from some local philanthrop-ists.
The Shewan Foundation donated$20,000 for animal medical expenses, the spay and neuter program, and for aplanned new education centre.
“This is an amazing donation!” wroteSean Baker, the director of LAPS. “Itmatches the biggest single donation thatwe have ever received.”
Stacey Kosturos said the family’sinvolvement with LAPS started the waymany people encounter the agency – shegot a cat.
Her step-mom helped her find the cat atLAPS when she moved back to Langleyafter a stint in the States five years ago.
“I just kind of fell in love with theorganization,” Kosturos said.
She began volunteering with the catkennels at LAPS, cleaning them out andplaying with the strays.
Her other family members have alsotaken on volunteer roles, including dogwalking and helping organize the annual
Furry Tail Ending gala.“We’re all really big animal lovers,”
Kosturos said. The foundation has been giving money
to LAPS for some time, including helpingto found the medical fund for cats anddogs in the first place.
Right now, the members of the Shewanfamily aren’t doing too much hands-on work, as other committments, likeKosturos’ new baby, are keeping thempretty busy.
But they’ll all be back for the nextgala, organizing and doing heavy lifting,Kosturos said.
The new donation will allow the shelterto spay and neuter more animals, andfund special surgeries that would nototherwise be possible. In many cases, that means dental procedures for cats,Baker said.
The Shewan Foundation also donates toother causes locally, including the YWCAand a theatre program for young peoplebased in Vancouver.

A lot of folks pretended they were Irish onSunday and wore funny green hats and gotroaring drunk on green beer and stuff likethat.
And a lot of folks didn’t.Among those who didn’t pretend to be Irish
were most folks who actually are Irish or ofIrish extraction.
Apparently, they’re not crazy aboutCanadian St. Patrick’s Day “traditions.”
Hmmm… I wonder why?Could it be that they’re not crazyabout being automatically beingassociated with wearing funnygreen hats, getting roaring drunkon green beer, and stuff likethat?
A survey commissioned byAncestry.ca just before St. Pat’siconic day indicates that about 60 per centof Irish-Canadians wouldn’t be celebrating.(I’m guessing most of them are the ones whoare as thrilled to be labelled as hyphenatedCanadians about as much as I like being calleda “Dutch-Canadian”… but more on that a bitlater on.)
The Ancestry survey revealed that about aquarter of all Canadians claim to have Irishancestry. That’s about nine million people– and if my calculations are correct, thatmeans somewhere between five and six mil-lion people get annoyed every time you put onone of those silly hats and order a green beer(that’s on top of everyone you annoy whenyou get falling-down drunk).
Remarkably, those five to six million peoplewith real Irish association think that thingslike that serve to under-appreciate the value oftheir contributions to overall Canadian culture.
Go figure. In fact, a significant number of Canadians
of Irish extraction are actually embarrassedby their generally perceived association withshamrocks and leprechauns.
Frankly, I’d be embarrassed, too, by generalmisperceptions that my ancestry automaticallymade me a clever lad whose intelligence wasmostly geared toward smooth-talking myselfout of gainful activities and into free beers andnap-times.
I’m not even going to get into how I’d feelabout obtuse perceptions of genetic proclivitytowards luck or chasing rainbows and littlepeople to steal their pots of gold.
Personally, I get offended enough by loutswho guess at my low-lander heritage andcleverly ask me how many dikes I’ve had myfinger in.
Gee. I’ve never heard that one before. Youmust be VERY clever to havecome up with that one!
Or wooden shoes. I absolutelydouble up with laughter everytime someone asks me why I’mnot wearing mine.
Actually, the wooden shoelines wouldn’t bother me byhalf, if they weren’t so ignor-
antly derisive – during breaks, my Dad madewooden shoes for spare cash when he was akid and working in his Dad’s bicycle shop.
So you see, it’s not the wooden shoes thatbother me – it’s the stupidity that they revealin people who really know nothing aboutwooden shoes or my ancestry.
And tulips… don’t get me going abouttulips! They’re beautiful, they’re edible (theykept a lot of people alive during the Nazioccupation through the Second World War)…and they’re not actually from Holland. They’refrom Turkey.
I’m not ashamed or embarrassed by myDutch heritage, by any stretch. But like mostCanadians whose ancestral origins are mis-understood here (which covers probably justabout all immigrated gene lines, includingthose originating from Ireland), I’m not Dutch-Canadian.
I’m Canadian.And remarkably, I can’t skate worth a darn.

Pay attentionto stay alive
It’s spring break this week. That means kids aren’t in school this
week. And that means they could be anywhere,
anytime this week. And that means drivers have to be extra
careful this week. And so BCAA has some timely advice
– advice that we’d like to share this week.BCAA has passed along some shocking
statistics about children and road safety.Ominously, the statistics originate with theBC Coroners Service.
More than 2,400 children pedestrians areseriously injured each year in Canada.
Thirty are killed. The kids most at risk for
pedestrian-related injuriesand fatalities are betweenthe ages of five and 14years.
“As the weather warmsup, more and more childrenventure outside to play in their front yards,on their streets and in neighbourhood play-grounds,” noted BCAA’s Mark Donnelly.
They’re at an age when kids are eas-ily distracted already, but throw in somenice spring weather and a few days out ofschool… add just one distracted driver, andit’s a formula for disaster.
We all know that one of the most dan-gerous distractions identified for drivers iscellphone activity – talking or texting whiledriving is deadly dangerous.
But a University of Alabama atBirmingham study shows that cellphonescan be dangerous in pedestrians’ hands, aswell.
In fact, children who talk on cellphoneswhile crossing the street have as much as aone-third greater likelihood of being hit ornearly hit by a car.
Distracted walking, as it turns out, is avery real risk.
So drivers aren’t the only ones who needto set their cellphones aside while on theroad – pedestrians who want to stay aliveneed to pay attention, too.

Dear Editor,I operate a registered farm in
the Agricultural Land Reservein Langley Township. I havebred and sold horses for over25 years.
Like many others, my farmand income have been gravelyaffected by relentless propanecannon blasts from nearbyfarms, June through Septembereach year.
Propane cannons cannot, in any respect,be considered or described as “normal farm-ing practices” by anyone who lives nearthem, nor by anyone that I know of who
farms in the normal way.At the recent public meeting,
Langley residents and farmersclearly described the destruc-tive impact these devices haveon their lives, farms, and busi-nesses.
I urge Langley Townshipcouncil to take a strong stanceon this critical matter. Pleaseinsist that the Minister ofAgriculture and the Ministry
revoke the ill conceived guidelines that havecreated this untenable situation for LangleyTownship residents.

Dear Editor,Aldergrove needs a 50-
metre pool with eight lanes. It seems pretty ridiculous
that public input would beasked for and then they dowhat they want anyhow, but that seems to be thecase in a lot of plans thatare made for Aldergrove.
Someone seems to
forget that it is not justAldergrove’s pockets thatthis money comes out of, itis all of Langley Township’spockets. That is why mytaxes went to pay for theWalnut Grove pool. I’m notquite sure how that bene-fited me, but no one askedif I minded that they usedmy money to build it.
So now it is finallyAldergrove’s overdue turn.We have been pushedaside long enough with theexcuse of not having a largeenough population to sup-port a pool.
I think the powers thatbe must be very narrow-minded to think that theonly people who wouldeven consider using the poolare residents of Aldergrove, especially considering that,if I want to do any type ofwater activities, I have togo to Blair Pool (which mytaxes also paid for) or theWalnut Grove pool, whichisn’t in my neighbourhoodeither, or wait until thesummer time and use theinadequate outdoor poolthat Aldergrove has hadfrom the beginning of time.
At this point the pow-ers that be seem moreconcerned in fulfilling thewishes of the arena usersand the library hierarchy, and finding a new home forthe Elks.
This project started outwith one purpose: finallybuilding an appropriatelysized indoor pool inAldergrove.

Design plans objectionableDear Editor,
I had to laugh when I heard that councillors noted thatthere had been no objection from the committees that lookover heritage design standards for Fort Langley [Projectgets thumbs up, March 12, Langley Advance].
What! This council did not listen to the residents, theheritage committees, or their own planning departmentwhen they gave approval (except for Coun. David Davis)for the Coulter Berry Building.
There is indeed a double standard in Fort Langley. Eventhe words of Charlie Fox – “…and in a way I’m very grati-fied that I challenged you” – making it sound as if the newplans were done because of him.
Why did none of these councillors, except for Mr. Davis, object to the monstrous CB Building being forced on the vil-lage against the majority who said no?
I hope that the residents of Fort Langley, Willoughby, and other areas of the Township not being listened to bythis council remember these serious concerns at the nextelection. It will be time for certain members of council whohave ignored us to finally hear us.
Sandra Cameron, Fort Langley
Dear Editor,I realize that it’s wrong
to criticize hockey whenStompin’ Tom Connors’ssong, which states, “Thereis no game you can namelike the good old hockeygame,” is being playedfrequently because of hisuntimely death.
Sorry, Tom, but I canname two or three thatequal or surpass hockey inentertainment value – atleast, as far as I’m con-cerned.
The first is soccer, theworld’s most famous andmost watched game, by far.
There is one aspect of thegame that many find appeal-ing, the sporting start withthe inclusion of little kids in
the opening ceremonies. This respectful aspect is
usually carried on prior tothe match, and concludeswith handshakes amongstopposing team members atthe end of the contest.
Certainly, there are certaindistasteful occurrences to beendured, such as fake injur-ies and rumours of game-fixing.
But by and large, this isa superb contest betweenmen (or women) who are inmagnificent physical condi-tion and can run more than12 kilometres during theevent.
Contrast this to most
hockey games we watch.I could mention rugby, of
course, with the roughest, toughest go at each other, without mercy – or tennismatches than can last forhours in blistering heat.
Canadian football isanother game that is enjoy-able, as is hockey, I gladlyadmit.
But sorry, Tom, there areother games many of us canname that do compare withyour good old hockey game.
Too bad he didn’t writea song about them, butunfortunately it’s too latenow.

Calcium Build-up...means hardening of the arteries, heart valves, joints, brain, muscles, kidneys, liver.Plus all soft tissues.By Dr. Chakib Hammoud, PhD. 50% of all deaths in NorthAmerica are caused by calcification and hardening of the arteries(arterialsclerosis, high blood pressure) and calcification of heart valves(aortic-valve stenosis). Calcium build-up also affects our brain(Alzheimer), tendons, muscles, glands, ducts, eyes, liver, kidneys, infact all soft tissues in our body. Calcium build-up in knees, shouldersand other joints can be very gritty and painful. Before you have yourjoint scoped and scraped, try #71.This should not be confused with the
very commonly occurring worn cartilage (arthritis) in the joints, which can be treated much morequickly with Bell Shark Cartilage #1 usually within 2-3 weeks with a money-back guarantee.Medical schools do not teach natural treatments like these, so your doctor may not be familiarwith natural medicines. Inform yourselves. You are responsible for your own health, not yourdoctor and not the government. Go on the public internet and get more details. Everybody knowstoday something about calcium build-up. Virtually everyone is increasingly affected as we ageand we should not wait until the symptoms get worse. Health experts say further calcium build-up can be halted and even reversed. Vitamin K2 plus D3 and five components form a uniquetreatment created by Dr. Hammoud based on scientific research over the last decades. These areby far some of the most important vitamins you can take for your overall health. Mostscientific discoveries do not get through to the public other than advertised synthetic drugs.

A mom whose six-year-olddaughter is facing a lifethreatening illness sharedtheir family’s story duringthe Princess Tea Party at theCoast Hotel.by Troy [email protected]
For one magical afternoon, theballroom inside the Coast Hoteland Convention Centre trans-formed into a scene from a fairytale.
Little ones, mostly girlsdressed in puffy dresses ofvarying shades of pink, yel-low, and purple, soaked up theatmosphere of the Princess TeaParty, hosted Saturday by theChildren’s Wish Foundation ofCanada, BC & Yukon Chapter.
For some of these children andtheir families, it was an escapefrom treatments, chemotherapy, and constant worry.
As part of B.C.’s Children’sWish Month, the foundationhosted the party that turned theroom into a place where theprincesses, and a few princes, were entertained by royal musi-cians, dancers, fairies, and acrew of swashbucklers.
The event, which includedjuice, coffee, tea, finger sand-wiches, facepainting, balloonanimals, and crafts, served as afundraiser for the foundation.
All proceeds will help grantwishes to children with lifethreatening illnesses.
One of those kids isa six-year-old girlfrom PortCoquitlam.
ClaraHoworthsays herwish isto go toHawaii, where shewill “swimwith the dol-phins.”
A year ago,Clara wasdiagnosed with acute lympho-blastic leukemia. Her parentsbraced for a hard life of needles, chemotherapy, and anxiety.
Clara’s mom Andrea spokeduring the party.
“We just finished our first
year of diagnosis and we haveanother year-and-a-half to go oftreatment at [B.C.] Children’sHospital,” Andrea said.
Clara is a typ-ical little girl. She’s involved indancing, singing, and swimming.
One night,Clara camehome fromSparks witha headache. She becamevery sick, with“fluids com-ing out bothends,” her
mom recalled. Her parents went with their
instinct and took her to B.C.Children’s Hospital.
Clara’s entire body becameinfected and she came downwith a very severe case of GroupA streptococcus, and her bodyjust couldn’t fight it.
Four days later, after Claraunderwent a bone marrowbiopsy, her parents were giventhe news: their daughter hadleukemia.
Clara spent nine days in the
hospital’s intensive care unit andthen she was moved to the onc-ology ward at Children’s. There,Clara and her parents met manyothers in the same situation thatthey were in.
Following Clara’s diagnosis, she and her family were corres-ponding with Children’s Wish.
“I cried,” Andrea said, hervoice breaking.
“My first thought was, howdid we become one of thosefamilies? I’m sure it goesthrough everybody’s mind. Andto this day we are so gratefuland thankful for Children’s Wishbecause the past year, we havehad a lot of ups and downs, andI’m happy to say that [Clara] isdoing very well, right now.”
Children’s Wish has been agreat supporter, said Andrea, who added that she and herfamily will give back to thefoundation any way they can.
“I’ve talked about my strugglein our first year, there’s manyfamilies here today that aregoing through a lot worse, and Ican’t wait for them to make theirwish, because it’s very import-ant to have that fun, family timetogether,” she said.

Rotarians are part of aninternational program to teachbeekeeping in Haiti.by Heather [email protected]

While honey is mainly a foodproduct in Canada, it’s not that wayin Haiti, explained John Gibeau, president of the Honeybee Centre inCloverdale.
“They do use it [honey] as foodbut mostly as medicine,” he noted.
The bees will feed on the moringaplant which is organic.
“It will be a very high valuehoney,” he noted.

Help for Haiti Consortiumstarted working in thecountry of 10 millionpeople back in 2004 andthe beekeeping projectis one facet of its workto improve the lives ofHaitians. It is expectedto unfold over about twodecades.
Haiti has a history ofbeekeeping but in the past, people used hollowed outlogs and believed that beescould only be handledat night. As well, theyoversmoked the bees sothe honey had a smoky
taste. And few years agothere was as total collapseof the bee population inthe region.
Hope for Haiti is work-ing to restore the industryand make it sustainable forthe long term.
Gibeau has spent time inHaiti teaching beekeepers. His being able to handlethem during the day with-out being swarmed wonthem over. Key has beenhelping them understandthe life cycle of a hive.
“Many of them hadnever seen a queenbefore,” he said of theHaitian beekeepers.
Gibeau noted that therehave been several barriersto overcome, includingpoverty and a languagebarrier (translators mustbe arranged for the inter-actions). Another impedi-ment – indigenous frogsthat can eat up to 3,000bees per day. A typicalhive contains 40,000-80,000 bees.
The goal is 1,000 bee-keepers tending 10,000hives. The region couldsustain many times thatnumber of hives so it’s notoversaturating the naturalenvironment, Gibeau said.• More at www.langleyadvance.com

James Barr was spectacular in stopping 42Eagles shots in a 1-0 Langley win Saturday.By Brandon Astlecontributor
Keeping things simple and playing a sounddefensive game, the Langley Rivermen upset theSurrey Eagles Saturday at South Surrey Arena.
Powered by the solid goaltending of James Barr, the ’Men blanked the Eagles 1-0 to even their best-of-five, opening round B.C. Hockey League playoffseries at a game apiece.
Langley was coming off a tough 2-0 loss onFriday night in what was a goaltender’s duelbetween Barr and Surrey’s Michael Santaguida.
Those two were the story again, to say the least. In the first period, the Rivermen came on strong
and Santaguida made a few key saves early on.Then, at the 6:25 mark, Brady Shaw took a minor
penalty for hooking, giving Langley the first powerplay of the game.
The Rivermen’s big guns stepped up to get theirteam on the board as Evan Campbell finished off apretty cross ice pass from Mario Puskarich.
It was exactly how they drew it up andCampbell’s name will forever be in the Rivermenrecord books after he scored the first playoff goalin the franchise’s history.
Barr was phenomenal in the opening framestopping all 11 shots he faced, while Santaguidastopped 15 out of 16 shots.
No goals were scored during the second period, but there were plenty of chances at both ends ofthe rink and the rough stuff picked up.
The best Rivermen chance came from JamesRobinson, but he could not put away a great passfrom Campbell on a two on one. Campbell put aperfect pass on the tape of Robinson on the leftwing but Santaguida came across to rob him withthe right pad. There were 46 penalty minutes com-bined in the second stanza.
The third period was one the fans at the SouthSurrey Arena soon won’t forget, especially theRivermen faithful.
Barr was the story as he absolutely stonedMichael Stenerson, who took a pass from KevinKilistoff on a two on one and looked like he had asure goal. Barr stretched out with the right pad andmade a huge stop with under 13 minutes to go.
Barr was not done there. The Eagles’ top line had a great third period
and came very close to tying the game. Theirbest chance came from Adam Tambellini. TrevorCameron flew into the Langley end on the left wingand stepped around a defenceman before droppinga perfect pass to a trailing Tambellini who had awide open net with Barr down.

…continued from page A21However, the Rivermen
netminder reached outwith the glove at the goalline and snatched thepuck out of mid-air. Itwas Barr’s best save in hisBCHL career consideringthe circumstances and hadthe crowd in a frenzy forthe rest of the game.
The Eagles continuedto look for the equalizer, but could not get anythingpast Barr as the Rivermenskated away with the 1-0victory.
It was the Rivermen’sfirst ever playoff win andthey have their goaltenderto thank. Barr stoppedall 42 shots he faced andearned his first BCHL play-off win and shutout.
Santaguida was spec-tacular again, but was
charged the loss and in theend saw 38 pucks.
Eagles 2, Rivermen 0If moral victories count
for anything, the ’Men hadreason to celebrate lateFriday night.
The Eagles had the bestrecord in the BCHL duringthe regular campaign andhad beaten the Rivermenseven out of eight timesduring their season series.
But in their playoff open-er, the Rivermen madethe Eagles work for theirvictory at South SurreyArena.
In betweenthe pipesit was Barrgoing upagainstSantaguida.
TheRivermenpepperedSantaguidaearly, buthe was verysharp.
Barr made some keysaves as well as the gamewas scoreless through thefirst 10 minutes.
The Eagles opened thescoring on a goal fromKilistoff, a Langley native,at the 14:38 mark. JoelGaudet stole the puck inhis own end and skated itback the other way on atwo on one with Kilistoff.
Gaudet waited at theperfect time to slide the
puck to him and he put agreat shot past Barr.
The next shift, theRivermen nearly tied thescore off the stick of MitchMcLain. There was a goal-mouth scramble in frontof Santaguida and McLainfound the puck behindhim in the crease, butcould not fire it into theempty net as he could notquite settle it down.
The Rivermen outshotthe Eagles 12-11 after 20minutes.
The second period hadno goals from either side,
but therough stuffreally start-ed to pickup.
Langleyhad mul-tiple oppor-tunitiesto tie thegame, butSantaguida
would still not let anythingpast him.
Puskarich had a goldenopportunity on a partialbreakaway, but his futureVermont teammate madea great right pad save tokeep it 1-0.
During a power play, theRivermen suffered a hugeblow when they lost oneof their top defencemenin a freak accident. MarkWhiteley had his shotblocked by an Eagles for-
ward at the point, whichled to a partial break.Whiteley hustled back andknocked the puck awayjust before the Surrey puckcarrier could get a shotaway, but then he wenttumbling into the endboards.
Whitely did not return tothe game.
In the third period, theRivermen picked up rightwhere they left off andhad sustained pressure inthe Surrey zone, but stillcould not beat the Eaglesgoaltender.
Just past the midwaypoint, the Eagles had theirfourth power play of thegame and made good onit.
Brady Shaw centereda pass through the slotthat a streaking AdamTambellini got a piece ofand re-directed the puckover the shoulder of Barr.
The Rivermen could notmuster up any goals andfell 2-0 to the Birds.
Santaguida was thestory, turning aside all 33shots he faced and pickedup first star honours.
ICE CHIPS: Saturday’swin means the Rivermenwill host the Eaglesback-to-back at the LEC.Following Monday’s game, the teams are right back atit tonight (March 19) witha 7:15 p.m. opening puckdrop.

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, columnand box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues alreadyprovided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
