Wherever You Go, Whatever You Do, Remember the Honor of Lane.

In the winter issue of Lane Tech Today, we took a look at the varied generations represented by the LTAA. As we continue

to learn about our vast membership we thought it might be interesting to also learn “WHERE we have landed”.

For many students, admission to Lane means leaving the familiarity of a neighborhood and becoming part of a community that is much larger and much more diverse than the place where they grew up. From Albany Park to Austin and Old Town to Uptown, each student crosses the threshold at Addison and Western for the first time equipped with what their small community taught them, and they leave four years later with an expanded mind and view of the world. In fact, when asked what our alumni were most thankful for relative to their tenure at Lane, a constant theme in your responses was gratitude for the opportunity to embrace new people and places that represented racial, ethnic and cultural diversity. Lane Tech was, and still is, a springboard for a global understanding, so it is no wonder that Lane Alumni develop a sense of adventure which leads to exploration, and desire to work and live across a broad swath of geography.

LTAA members reside in all but one state and abroad in countries like Japan, Greece, Germany and Canada. According to our records, West Virginia is the only state in the union without a myrtle and gold flag. Illinois of course leads the way with over

3300 members, but warm weather states like California with the second largest number of alumni at 194, Florida, Arizona and Texas are all home to a considerable number of LTAA members. There are also 102 Flatlander ex-pats who now make their homes just north of the border in Wisconsin. Was it the other green and gold that attracted them we wonder?Lane Tech alums frequently contact our staff to request in-formation on fellow Lane grads who may be residing in their area. Although we are not per-

mitted to share personal information, we encourage the use of the “members” area of our website which will be refreshed this summer, and the LTAA Facebook page for outreach. We also welcome the efforts of any brave Indians who might be interested in volunteering to spearhead some satellite LTAA activity in their area. President’s Message Stuart Eng ‘85

W here do we go from here? Every Lane graduate has faced the same question upon leaving the comfort of 2501 West Addison.

Some of us knew precisely what we wanted to do while most of us waited for serendipity to help us choose our path. Some chose to explore and live in faraway places (see profiles in this issue) and while others remained in or near the Chicago area. We love hearing your stories about running into fellow alumni in distant lands and encourage you to send them to us for publication. With the advent of the Internet and social media, connecting with our far

flung alumni has gotten easier. We encourage our out of state (and country) alumni to contact our office for the purpose of establishing connections with fellow LTAA members. We will assist you in finding other alumni in your area and will post information relevant to your region as it becomes available. Back to the original topic---where do we go from here? As your Alumni Association, our mission is to be the conduit between graduates and the school. In addition to publishing our quarterly newsletter and holding alumni events, we coordinate and provide scholarships to graduating seniors, fund Teacher Innovation Grants and have recently started partnering with the school on capital projects. We value your membership and ask that you send us your ideas on how we can serve you better. Best Regards, Stuart Eng, (‘85) President

Battle of the Bands and Buses

We all know from experience that Lane Tech is the portal to an expansive world, and taking advantage of all that Lane has to offer as students

is the first step towards “Wherever You Go, Whatever You Do”, but one of the most daunting challenges encountered today by faculty, coaches and club sponsors is how to offset costs for the various extracurricular activities offered at Lane. As an example, the athletic department ended this academic year with an outstanding bill of $18,000.00 for bus services to get teams to and from their competitive events. Brian Hofman, ‘85, Lane’s Athletic Director, shared that approximately 1200 young athletes pay a transportation fee at the beginning of the year but it never covers total year-end costs, “It is very important that our athletes play high caliber opponents and to do that they need to travel. There are no longer just a frosh/soph team and a varsity team. Now we have freshman A and B teams, sophomore teams, JV teams and varsity teams. The increase in the number of teams also increases the number of games and the number of buses needed to transport them”. The LTAA recognizes that moving students from point A to point B is an expensive proposition. In fact, travel expenses have been some of the most frequently requested items through the LTAA Grant Program, accounting for nearly one-third of the past requests for financial support. To help defray the costs for transportation of athletes in the 2012/13 academic year, the Alumni Association has donated $10,000.00 towards the outstanding invoices for bus service. Other support challenges for students hit closer to home. The recent “Lane-a-Palooza” battle of the bands included acts like “The Blisters” featuring Spencer Tweedy, (Son of Jeff Tweedy of Wilco), and “The UnGnomes” (featuring Jimmy Langford, son of John Langford of the Waco Brothers), and a host of other student and faculty bands. The event was a fun opportunity for students to hear some great music and fund raise for the new recording studio at Lane, which will support sound engineering and production classes. The LTAA donated $3,000.00 towards reduced ticket prices for students so that they might be able to enjoy this unique event. We are committed to helping the students at Lane get where they need to go!

LTAA Professional Day is the longest running program in the Association’s history and continues to increase in popularity and value every year. On March 22nd, the day

after College Night at Lane, a team of twenty alumni descended upon the school to talk to students about their Lane Tech experiences, post-graduate life, and careers. “This year was the first time I participated in this valuable program, and I wish I had been doing so all along! Our speakers were extremely interesting, engaging, well-prepared, open to students’ questions and a pleasure for both the students and me to have as guests in the classroom. I would definitely request all three speakers back to my classroom,” remarked Ms. Green of the World Language Department.During these class periods, students were treated to presentations and lively exchange from professionals in the areas of advertising, accounting, architecture, pharmaceutical chemistry, marine biology & atmospheric chemistry, business management, criminal law, law enforcement, child psychiatry, engineering, agricultural science, hospital administration, respiratory therapy and music. Mike Olijnyk (’88) commented on the day, “I find it very rewarding as everyone is so attentive and genuinely interested in what we have to say. I recall hearing alumni speak to my history class when I was a student and now I feel it is my duty to pass on what I have learned to future graduates.” The LTAA would like to thank the teachers who participated in the program, and acknowledge the following alumni speakers who inspired and informed the students:

David Bickel (’82) Burt Blanchard (’85) Brian Bohnert (’85) Efrem Capili (’88) Becky Carity (’93) Dr. Simon Friedman (’84) Dr. David Goldman (’81) Ciro Gomez (’72) Alan Halfen (’66) Stephanie Herrnreiter (’99) Timothy Kain (’71) George Martinez (’08) Michael Olijnyk (’88) Cheryl Parker (’97) Melissa Ramos-Morales (’89) Dr. Richard Razgaitis (’61) Philip Scopes (’88) Christine A. Up on the Roof!

Attendees at the recent LTAA Cubs Rooftop event hoped for a Cubs victory with all the optimism of a

dewy-eyed freshman shopping for drafting shoes. Bright sunshine and very little wind made the views from 1038 Waveland a pleasure, even from the farthest bleacher seat, (no jumbotron yet). The food was great and the fellowship even better thanks to Jim Parker, John Arndt and the rest of the fun gang from the Class of 1958. We also had two future Indians and their families in attendance; one eighth-grade student from Sauganash Elementary, and another from the Academic Center at Taft who are part of Lane’s incoming class of 2017! All was going swimmingly. Samardzija had a solid start, Soriano hit not one, but two, 2-run homers and the Cubs were leading 4-2 until the eighth inning… and then it happened… Carlos Marmol. Two walks and a hit batter resulted in a Reds four-run rally and a 6-4 victory over the Cubs, but fear not! We were still able to celebrate a victory that day with the Lane Tech boys’ varsity baseball team beating Niles North 17-14 in a three-hour-long battle of the bats. A hearty thank you to all those who helped plan the rooftop party, and to those who came out to support the Alumni Association and Lane Tech!

Edward J. Jay, Jr, (’39) submitted a copy of his World War II story to the Alumni Association Memory Book. With help from his daughter, Mr. Jay wrote about his days after Lane and his experience as a young soldier during World War II. His grandchildren inspired him write his story as a keepsake for his family and future generations.

’42As a result of their successful 70th year reunion tour in October, Robert Haley (’42) and Robert Krautstrunk (’42) discovered they had something in common; both alums were submariners during World War II. Together they attended a meeting of U.S. Submarine Veterans, where they shared stories of their war-time experiences, job histories and families. Speaking of family, in February, Bob Haley and his wife celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary. Congratulations Bob!

’49William Valitus, (’49) is a retired mechanical engineer who lives on a lake in southern California where he spends his daze [sic] fishing and writing. Bill’s first book, Navy Daze, is a chronicle of his “four years before the mast” during the Korean Conflict.

’57Last February, the Lane admissions office forwarded an email to the Alumni Association from a person in Michigan who had found a Lane Tech January 1957 class ring with the initials W.G.O. When Mary Beth Ficht received the email, she began her LTAA forensic investigation which included pouring over old yearbooks and searching the internet. Her efforts proved worthwhile when she found William G. Os. When notified by the Alumni office, Mr. Os was surprised and thrilled to hear his ring was found. He said the ring was lost for quite some time and in fact it was his second class

ring to disappear. Arrangements were made to get the ring from Michigan and returned to its grateful owner. “The Alumni Office is always pleased to make these connections”, said Mary Beth Ficht, “it’s great to get these rings back into the hands, and on the fingers of our alumni!”

’70Gary J. Martin, M.D. (’70) was on the Lane Speed Skating team from 1966-1970. He recently commented, “Coach George Dayiantis organized the team once each year for the city wide high school meet, which Lane won all four years even though we didn’t have any training or practice!” About forty years later, Gary started speed skating again for exercise and fun, finally training and competing in local and regional meets. This past March, he went to his first national competition where he earned gold medals in the 500/777/1000 and 1500m races in his age group. Clearly an impressive way to continue the legacy of Champions! When he’s not skating he is Vice Chairman for the Department of Medicine at Northwestern University and has always appreciated his time at Lane.

’73Russ Maheras (’73) is illustrating 106 sketch cards for the Topps Company’s soon-to-be released trading card set “Star Wars Galactic Files: Series 2.” His artwork, along with that of other participating artists, will be randomly inserted as special collectible incentive cards in packs of cards sold world-wide. This is his third sketch drawn series for Topps. The others were “Mars Attacks Heritage” and “Star Wars Galactic Files: Series 1”-both released in 2012.

’12 Yousra Jouglaf, (“12) is currently at Miami University and on track to graduate almost two years early. She works as an “America Reads” tutor at different elementary schools near Oxford, Ohio. Yousra is a political science major, an executive member of the pre-law society, and was recently the first freshman in the school’s history to represent Miami University at the Political Theory Institute at American University in Washington D.C.

Alumni Spotlight

Dr. John Gianopulos, ‘49

John Gianopulos serves on the faculty of the Greek Bible College outside Athens, where he teaches courses on the New Testament. He also helped found the school’s Alpha Program—a one-year program taught in English

that combines classroom instruction with extensive field trips to help students better understand the Bible. John earned his bachelor’s degree from Chicago State University, his master’s and doctoral degrees in Educational Administration from Loyola University and a master’s in Theological Studies from North Park Seminary. He was vice president of faculty and instruction at Truman College until his retirement in 1995. He and his wife have three sons and five grandchildren.

LTAA: How did you come to live in Greece?JG: 17 years ago I took an early retirement from the City Colleges of Chicago. I served as vice-president of faculty and instruction at Truman College. After much prayer, my wife and I decided to come to Greece as missionaries. We teach at the Greek Bible College located close to Athens where I teach Bible and my wife teaches Greek. My wife and I both speak Greek and we have a number of relatives living here which made the transition easier.

LTAA: When you attended Lane did you live close to Addison and Western?JG: I grew up in the neighborhood of Kedzie and Irving Park Road and attended Cleveland Elementary School. After getting married we moved to Arlington Heights, Illinois.

LTAA: Did any particular teacher inspire you?JG: Captain Huff the director of the band was most encouraging and inspired me to continue my education.

LTAA: What advice would you give to current students about exploring their world?JG: My advice to the students is to redeem the time. Maintain motivation attend classes, manage your time, embrace diversity, communicate effectively, learn from others and be willing to persevere.

LTAA: Do you miss anything about Chicago?JG: You are blessed with some great Greek restaurants in Chicago. I do miss them. The food in these restaurants is every bit as good as those here in Greece. They say that Greek yogurt is quite popular in Chicago. I like it with a little honey on top. This is the land noted for its Mediterranean diet. Try it, you will like it!

LTC Tina Kracke, ‘83

Lieutenant Colonel Kracke graduated from West Point in 1987 and then attended the Command and General Staff College and the

School of Advanced Military Studies in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. She has spent most of her military career serving as an Operational Planner or Plans Chief throughout the globe, most recently at NATO Joint Forces Command in the Netherlands.

LTAA: How did you come to live where you currently do? TK: I have been serving in the U.S. Army since graduation from Lane and have moved many times during my service. I am now stationed at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas where I trained before a tour in South Korea in 2004. After Korea, I served in Germany, Iraq, Romania and spent most of the last four years at NATO Joint Forces Command, Brunnsum, in the Netherlands. I have recently returned to Kansas where I serve as an instructor and leverage my many years of experience in molding the military officers of the future.

LTAA: When you attended Lane did you live close to Addison and Western?TK: My sister Kim (Kracke) Weaver (’85) and I grew up in Ravenswood Manor, near Montrose and California. It took so long to take the bus that we often walked the two miles to school, cutting through Horner Park and California Park in about half the time it took on the CTA.

LTAA: How did attending Lane impact your sense of adventure?TK: I was the only student from my grade school, Tabor Lutheran, to go to Lane. My class at Tabor had only 12 students. I remember my first day of High School when we all met in the auditorium with the freshman class of 1400 students, of which I knew not one single person - I was scared and excited. I think this helped shape me into a person who had to be outgoing and accept challenges and have a natural curiosity for the world outside of my own personal environment.

LTAA: Did any particular teacher inspire you?TK: I remember Ms. Maslow who taught Geometry as being strict and demanding, but also respectful of students who tried hard and excelled. She was tough. She challenged me to compete for a spot in Mrs. Biddulph’s 2-year math program. I also remember my student counselor, Mr. Lehman. We had to see a counselor to talk about out plans for after Lane and I told him I wanted to go to an Engineering school. He looked over my records and asked “why don’t you go to a Military Academy?” I asked him about them, applied, and that is how I ended up at the United States Military Academy - West Point, NY.

5. What advice would you give to current students about exploring their world?TK: Just go!!! My sister Kim and I began exploring the world while I was still at West Point. I have since been in all but three of our fifty states and all over Europe, Asia, and most recently, South Africa. I travel mostly for fun, but sometimes for work as well. People everywhere seem to be friendly, places are safe and comfortable (if you use your common (Chicago) sense), and the more you learn about people and places, the more you want to explore.

LTAA: Do you miss anything about Chicago?TK: Everything!!! Chicago is the BEST city in the world and I have a serious basis of comparison. Besides my friends, I most miss ready access to live Chicago blues music. I could also go for a Chicago-style hot dog while enjoying the spectacular views of the city. No place is like “Sweet Home Chicago”, and GO BEARS!!!

Remembering Al Juengling

Our dear friend, Al Juengling passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 20th. Al was a graduate of the class of 1958 along with

his twin brother Robert, and taught history at Lane for an astounding forty-two years. While at Lane, he also coached the hockey team and was an enthusiastic fan of the Chicago Wolves. Al was also an avid collector of model trains and a die-hard Cubs fan.Few people could rival Al’s sixty-year relationship with Lane Tech or could leave a more enduring mark as a student, teacher, coach and alumnus. Al was one of the “founding fathers” of the Lane Tech Alumni Association, serving on the LTAA board for thirty-two years. His memorial service on May 7th at Saint Paul’s UCC in Chicago was well attended by family, friends and colleagues including former principals LoBosco, Schlichting, and Mazarakos. This Lane Tech Indian will be profoundly missed by all who knew him.

Walking Down Memory Lane

Class of 1958

The Class of 1958 celebrated its 55th reunion on campus, May 3. Alumni and guests gathered in the Civics Room

(113) in the morning for a brief meet and greet with the Alumni Office where Executive Director Cook gave a brief presentation to the group about the Alumni Association and current Lane Tech happenings. The group then toured the school guided by student art docents and reconvened for a light lunch and chance to compare notes about what is still the same and what has changed at the school. Special thanks go out to John Arndt (’58) and Jim Parker (’58) for spearheading the reunion. Some of the 1958 alumni continued their celebration the next day at the Lane Tech Alumni Association annual Cubs Game Rooftop party.
