    South Santa Clara ValleyWHERE CALIFORNIAS PAST COMES ALIVE

    H ere in Silicon Valley, thanks to the foresight and commitment of peoplelike you, it doesnt take long to find bucolic escapes that are uniquelyCalifornian. POST has spent the past 31 years protecting signature landscapesup and down the Peninsula and along the coast. While we continue to workfervently to conserve open space in these areas, we also recognize the needto expand our work into adjacent land of urgent concern.

    In south Santa Clara County, development pressures have put increasingstrain on Morgan Hill and Gilroy. Yet in the foothills just west of theseburgeoning cities, an older, slower pace of life still exists. Vineyards dot thevalleys and cattle graze the gentler slopes. The drive along Uvas Roadafavorite of mineis a trip back in time, past hidden reservoirs, oak-studdedpastures and rock-strewn meadows that hark back to the days of old

    California. You can almost hear the click of hooves and the groan of wagon wheels along winding ranch trails.Nine years ago, along this very road, POST made its first major foray

    into south Santa Clara County by protecting the old Crummer family ranch.Part of this land became Rancho Caada del Oro Open Space Preserve,while the rest was added to Calero County Park. In the years since, POSThas built relationships with partner agencies and landowners in the area,preparing for conservation opportunities that are now beginning to cometo fruition.

    In the past few months an 865-acre ranch near Morgan Hill and the408-acre Clark Canyon Ranch in Gilroy, featured in this issue of Landscapes,have been saved for the future. Located just a few miles from hotly contestedCoyote Valley, these properties could have faced a very different future, soldfor estate residences or other modern uses that would close them forever topublic use and remove any vestiges of the lands rural, rugged character.Now these ranch lands are destined to become magnificent additions topublic parkland, where you and I will be able to meander through carpets of spring wildflowers, walk the banks of gurgling streams, spot wild turkeysand follow miles of trails to surprising vista points. Old California will benew again, and it will be there for all of us to enjoy.

    With your continued support, we know POST can have enormous impacton saving the Santa Cruz Mountain hillsides of south Santa Clara County.They are the Bay Areas undiscovered treasure and true vintage California.

    W hen Burt Clark purchased 408 acres on theoutskirts of Gilroy in 1948, he had no grandplans. The land was beautiful, affordable and seemed

    like a pleasant place where he and his wife, Veda,could entertain family and friends. Burt and Veda hadno children, but they delighted in creating a modestretreat where they could hunt, fish, tramp throughthe woods and simply enjoy the spectacle of theseasons from their dining room window.

    Beauties of the landThe moment one drives through the gate,

    Burt Clarks reasons (impulsively, without evenconsulting his wife, so the story goes) forbuying the ranch are clear. A broad meadowstretches toward the wooded foot of a boxcanyon. Mixed forest rises steeply to the right.A tributary to Bodfish Creek, with its sturdyline of sycamores, creates a borderon the left. Farther to the left,across the creek, are more meadowlands rising to a high wall of chaparral. It is a mini-universe,with evidence of abundant native

    species.Burt passed away in 1993,Veda in 2006, at which time Johnbecame executor of their estate.

    John had offered the property forsale for more than a year, until aseries of inquiries led him to POST.Once John, his two siblings andtwo cousins became aware of POSTs

    ability to purchase land for future public use, theyknew they had found a buyer whose mission andgoals the Clarks would have admired.

    Our family is thrilled that the ranch willbe a place we can always come back to andvisit, and I am looking forward to bringing mygrandson here to experience the same hikes Iloved to take growing up, says Linda TothBerg, Johns sister.

    Family activitiesNow in his 50s, John remembers as a kid

    spending all his summer weekends exploringClark Canyon Ranch. While his sister and brother

    rode horses, John covered the territory on hishomemade mini-bike. There were trout andgood-sized steelhead in the creek. His uncle Burtwould sometimes catch them in pools on thehigher portions of the property. Burt liked tohunt, though John says he generally took onlyone deer each year. The Clarks kept a few cows;

    T he history of southwestern SantaClara County is written into thevery soil. To gain familiarity with thisformer hub of early California commerce,we invite you to drive south on theregions back roads, many of themdesignated scenic by the county. Thelook of the area is different enough tomake north county residents feel as if theyve gone on vacation.

    From the Peninsula, takeHighway 101 south to Bernal Road.

    Turn left onto Santa Teresa Boulevardpassing Santa Teresa County Park .Travel three miles through the richagricultural land of Coyote Valley andturn right onto Bailey Avenue. FollowBailey to McKean Road, turning leftalong the edge of Calero County Park.The park itself might be a destination,or you can continue past meadowsand streams lined with sycamores,

    maples and alders to the junction withUvas Road. A right on Casa LomaRoad leads to the entrance of RanchoCaada del Oro Open Space Preserve ,to which POST transferred significantacreage. If you drive back to McKeanRoad, which becomes Uvas Road asyou continue south, you pass theentrance to Blair Ranch . Though notyet open to the public, POST facilitated

    protection of this 865-acre ranch as partof adjacent Rancho Caada del Oro.Continuing south along Uvas

    Road, you pass Chesboro ReservoirCounty Park and Croy Road, whichleads to the entrance to Uvas CanyonCounty Park . Once inside the park,you can take the one-mile Waterfall

    Loop along Swanson Creek to see oneof Uvas Canyons many waterfalls. Backon Uvas Road you pass Uvas ReservoirCounty Park . At the junction withWatsonville Road, bear right towardChitactac-Adams Heritage CountyPark . At the junction with Hecker PassHighway (Route 152), turn right andhead for Mt. Madonna County Park ,your turn-around spot or your destinationfor the day. Entrance fees are $3 per cardaily and give you access to the visitor

    center, picnic tables, campgrounds, anarchery range and 18 miles of hikingtrails. At the summit you can see stonegarden walls of the once-glorioussummer home of cattle baron HenryMiller, who at the turn of the lastcentury controlled nearly every acrewithin sight.

    highlights Traces of the prehistoric Ohlone culture are found

    in bedrock mortars and petroglyphs on display inChitactac-Adams Heritage County Park.

    Early permanent residents worked Mexican landgrants, raising cattle for hides and tallow.

    Blair Ranch was originally part of lands grantedfor the pueblo of San Jose.

    Clark Canyon Ranch was part of the24,000-acre Las Animas land grant.

    Gilroy thrived because it lay at the crossing pointfor connections between the San Joaquin Valley,

    Santa Clara Valley and the coast aswell as along the Southern Pacific rai

    line. City history is preserved at theGilroy Museum on Fifth Street. Wheat was the valleys primarycrop by 1868. Tobacco was importantenough to warrant a cigar factory. Timber in Uvas Canyon washarvested for the New Almaden mineswhile Bodfish Mills provided lumber fSouth County construction.

    Eventually Bodfish Mill Road became Hecker PaRoad in honor of Henry Hecker, an early Bank ofGilroy president and county supervisor. The millat one time belonged to L. A. Whitehurst, also aBank of Gilroy president, whose name clings tothe lane leading to Clark Canyon Ranch.

    By 1900 viticulture and orchards were replacingwheat and cattle. Dairies made Gilroy Californiadairy capital until 1940. French prunes, raisin andtable grapes and French varietals were planted.Vegetables, flowers and seed propagation filled

    Coyote Valley. Canning, drying and processingfollowed. Garlic, brought by Japanese immigrantafter World War I, was a latecomer.

    Today a dozen wineries dot the region. Some, likSolis Winery, have a history going back to the1800s.     the calves would be sold each spring, andthough cattle might have provided a livelihood,the Clarks kept them mainly as lawnmowers,according to John.

    Burt and Veda owned Clarks JewelryStore in downtown Gilroy, ten minutes away by

    car. Veda was an accomplished artist who tookgreat pleasure in painting scenes from theranch. She painted landscapes inYosemite and other spectacularnatural places, yet a frequent subjectof her art was the meadow rightoutside her front door.

    The meadow was not always aswide open as it is today. Years agoboth sides of the creek had been

    planted in walnuts. One year acounty official noticed the trees andinformed the Clarks the crop was taxable,even though they were not selling the walnutscommercially. Burt immediately tore out mostof the trees. Ringed with woodpecker holes anddraped in moss, the remaining trees are ghostsof the orchard that was.

    The open meadow is one of the mostendearing features of Clark Canyon Ranch.Animals of all kinds cross to the creek, browseand hunt. John and his wife, LoAnne, reportseeing wild turkeys, bald eagles, even a mountainlion with two kits. Clark Canyon has an

    antique wagon and fencing that kept the cattlefrom wandering away. Grapes and climbingroses put on leaves inanticipation of a measure of appreciation.

    With careful planning andthe continued support of POSTdonors, Clark Canyon Ranchwill help retain the naturalresources that give character to

    the slopes of the Santa CruzMountains in southern SantaClara County. Development

    here could easily have closed off all thepropertys ecosystems as well as public access.Instead, Clark Canyon Ranch is now readyto join the ranks of protected open space inthe region.

    POST works closely withour elected officials tosave land. In this issue wehighlight Sen. DianneFeinstein, whose ongoingsupport for POST hasbeen essential to ourhaving added the PhlegerEstate to the Golden GateNational Recreation Area(GGNRA) in 1995 and toour having extended theGGNRA boundaries toinclude Rancho Corral deTierra in 2005.

    Community-basedorganizations like POST are invaluablepartners with government. They canwork side-by-side with federal and stateofficials to protect open space and ensurethat our natural lands remain shieldedfrom development and other pressures.

    The Golden Gate National Recre-ation Area has long been the crown jewel of the San Francisco Bay Areas

    beautiful landscape. And POST wasreally the driving force behind the suc-cessful campaign to expand theGGNRA to include the unique RanchoCorral de Tierra property, near Montara.

    Two and a half years ago, thepresident signed into law the GGNRA boundary expansion to include RanchoCorral de Tierra. This scenic, 4,262-acreproperty along the San Mateo Coast

    was originally slated for development.POST stepped in and helped ensurethat the land, which provides enormousrecreation potential as well as fertilefields for farmers, would be protectedfor generations to come.

    Open lands like Rancho Corralde Tierra are special places. With itssweeping vistas of our picturesque

    coastline, this property offers a refugefrom the demands of our hectic lives.You can spot rare and endangeredwildlife like the peregrine falcon or red-legged frog, and find native wildflowerslike poppies and lupines. There areeven unique plants found on Rancho

    Corral, like Montara manzanita, thatgrow nowhere else in the world.

    In todays tough budgetary times,private organizations such as POST playa critical role in helping the federalgovernment protect precious openspaceat a more affordable price. POSTsanticipated transfer of the land to thefederal government for about half theoriginal purchase cost is really the key

    to this project. By arranging such a bargain sale, POST creates the momen-tum that motivates me to work now onsecuring money from the Federal Landand Water Conservation Fund to helppay for adding this property to theNational Park System. Once Congressapproves the remaining appropriationsfor Rancho Corral de Tierra, the landwill provide an excellent southern gate-

    way into the rest of the GGNRA.Today, more than ever, we must be vigilant in our efforts to ensure thatour open spaces in California andacross the country are protected. If wedont act now, well be in danger oflosing them forever. And thats whyorganizations like POST are so veryimportant.

    Coastside Landowner Donates Easement to POSTGIFT PROTECTS EXPANSIVE TOTO RANCH

    OST received a donation of a conservationeasement on a 952-acre ranch along Highway 1

    south of Half Moon Bay. In April landowner andlongtime POST supporter Kathleen Scutchfielddonated the easement, valued at $7.9 million, topreserve the scenic vistas and rich natural resourceson her Toto Ranch.

    Ive seen how development has been creepingup and down the coast. I believe its important tomake a statement and save this land just as it is, inits open, natural state, said Scutchfield. POSThas done so much to preserve the character of theCoastside, and I want to see this beautiful landprotected forever.

    A native of Texas, Scutchfield has calledCalifornia home since 1971. She co-founded thenonprofit Until Theres a Cure Foundation, which

    raises funds for AIDS vaccine development, carefor AIDS patients and AIDS education. She is alsoa trustee emeritus of the San Francisco Ballet.An avid equestrian, she lives in Woodside. Shepurchased Toto Ranch in 1982 with her latehusband, Donald.

    The ranch, currently used for open spaceand grazing, offers impressive views of the PacificOcean and Tunitas Creek Valley as well as

    Purisima Creek Redwoods and El Corte Maderaopen space preserves. On clear days, MontaraMountain, part of POSTs Rancho Corral deTierra property, is visible in the distance. Theeasement protects five acres of prime agriculturalsoils as well as grasslands, hardwoods and mixedevergreen forest. It also preserves a lengthy corridor

    of watershed along Tunitas Creek and its tributaries,habitat for the federally threatened steelhead troutand federally endangered Coho salmon.

    Given its prime location along Highway 1,the ranch would have been a likely candidate fora luxury second-home subdivision were it not forthis easement, according to POST Executive VicePresident Walter T. Moore.

    Properties similar to Toto Ranch havebecome very attractive to extremely wealthy

    private buyers. Up to seven lots of more than100 acres could have easily overwhelmed thegentle slopes of this rolling coastal terrain andthreatened its watershed and wildlife habitat,Moore said. Thanks to her donation of thiseasement to POST, Kathy Scutchfield has madesure that such threats will never overtake TotoRanch. We are most grateful for her vision andextraordinary generosity.

    Wavecrest Purchase Finalarly this year POST purchased Wavecrest, a206-acre property between Highway 1 and the

    Pacific Ocean in Half Moon Bay. POST made adown payment of $4.5 million to save the propertyand has two years to raise the $9 million balance due.

    During this interim period, public use of the ballfields, dog park and informal trails will continue asbefore, and POST will work on plans to extend theCalifornia Coastal Trail across the property.

    The protection of Wavecrest means thecommunity is no longer at risk of losing this amazingnatural and recreational resource, says POSTExecutive Vice President Walter T. Moore. Fromnow on, residents and visitors will come here andknow that this beautiful, vital landscape will remainundeveloped forever.

    n March, POST successfully completed protectionof the former Blair property, an 865-acre cattle

    ranch in Morgan Hill featured in the spring 2008issue of Landscapes . The ranch, located in southSanta Clara County, is destined to become publicparkland as an addition to neighboring RanchoCaada del Oro Open Space Preserve.

    Partnering with the Santa Clara County Open

    Space Authority, POST negotiated the purchase of the land for $8.65 million from the Blair family.Prior to close of escrow on March 17, POSTassigned its right to purchase the land to the OpenSpace Authority. By doing so, POST hastened theeventual opening of the property to the public andmade it possible for the Blairs to continue owning ahome on an adjacent 126 acres.

    recently named two outstandingvolunteersClaudia Newbold, of Menlo Park,and Alisa MacAvoy, of Redwood Cityas Volunteers of the Year. Honors were bestowed on both women for their inexhaust-ible energy in helping POST complete tasksimportant to the organization.

    Claudia NewboldBut for the generosity of others, we

    wouldnt be able to enjoy open space now,says Claudia. She has volunteered for POSTsince 2004, when she created a visual, writtenand GPS record of all plaques, kiosks andother items installed as memorials on POST

    land. She serves on a volunteer team thatmakes quarterly visits to 304-acre LobitosRidge and 206-acre Bluebrush Canyon, bothPOST-owned coastal properties, to checkconditions on the land. Claudia is also partof a team that monitors POSTs conserva-tion easement over the Krauskopf/ Conleyproperty, 191 acres along Skyline Ridgenear Highway 9. She has also helped with

    labor intensive projects like planting willow

    shoots to help control erosion on POSTwatershed land.

    Alisa MacAvoyAlisa has volunteered for POST since

    2002 and been a leader in engaging newpeople to support the organization. POSTconnects people with each other and withthe properties in a special way, says Alisa.She is an enthusiastic public speaker, ableto articulate her passion for POSTs mission,whether on the podium or on a path.

    Alisa and her husband, Neil, have aview of Bair Island from their home inRedwood City and can often be found thereon outings with their daughters Clara andMarissa, ages 7 and 9, respectively. Thegirls have been playing on POST-protectedland since they were infants.

    POSTs corps of 115 volunteers addsimmeasurably to what we can accomplish,says POST President Audrey Rust. Claudiaand Alisa not only take on important tasks but motivate others to lend their skills andsupport. We are very grateful for theirhelp.

    Redwood Trail0.25 miles, one-way

    In 1987 POST provided $16,600 toward constructionof the Redwood Trail, a wheelchair-accessible path.The special surface trail takes off from SkylineBoulevard half a mile north of the Kings Mountain and

    Tunitas Creek Road intersection in Woodside. There isa small parking lot at the trailhead and a picnic tablenearby. Between the trees you can look across thedescending slopes toward Half Moon Bay.

    Whittemore Gulch TrailApproximately 3.5 miles, one-way

    This multi-use trail is easily reached from the preservesmain entrance on Skyline Boulevard or from the westentrance on Higgins-Purisima Road in Half Moon Bay.Where you start depends on whether you want anuphill or a downhill experience first. Along the wayare beautiful, first- and second-growth redwood trees.Be prepared for a series of switchbacks in the portionof your journey closest to Skyline Boulevard.

    Purisima Creek TrailApproximately 4.1 miles, one-way

    A car shuttle at the preserves west entrance will makethis trail an easy ramble. Like the Whittemore Gulch

    Trail, this one is open to bicyclists and horsemen.If youre planning a round trip, bring lunch and water.Our description begins at the preserves southernSkyline entrance, opposite Huddart Park and ignoresthe other trail connections you pass along the way.Go over the hikers stile and walk beneath a mixedredwood and Douglas fir forest. A little more than amile into your walk, youll find yourself beside the fernbanks of Purisima Creek. The trail follows the oldlogging road as it winds down the canyon, eventuallywidening to more open, sunny terrain. From this point

    on, the trees become more dense, hiding numeroussmall streams that support wildflowers in all seasons.Among the rewards at this end of the trail is a memorialgrove of immense redwoods.

    S U M M E RO U T I N GPurisima Creek Redwoods Open Space PreserveWhen it is hot everywhere else, trails in Purisima Creek Redwoods offer numerous cool variationsone-way trips or loops, depending on how you connect them.

    Purisima Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserveencompasses 3,117 acres of slopes and canyons west ofSkyline Boulevard and is managed by the MidpeninsulaRegional Open Space District (MROSD). Over the yearsPOST has transferred parcels amounting to 670 acres toMROSD for the preserve. Though the transactions took p

    years ago, public enjoyment from a wide spectrum of visicontinues to grow.
