A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENTLandscape Saskatchewan Management Clinic 2015 was a hugesuccess! Mike Lysecki presented many systems to help ourmembers with their operations, and easy to use bonus plans thatcan be implemented into any size company. I left the clinic feelingempowered and motivated to bring fresh ideas into my owncompany this spring.

I am looking forward to an early spring this year; the geese are coming home andthe ice is breaking up, all about 2 weeks early! This is a landscaper’s dream on theprairies, getting an early start!

We welcome two new board members this year, Lane Bullied from Gardens ByDesign Inc. and Nancy Martin from Dieter Martin Greenhouses Ltd. I look forwardto working with them on projects that support Landscape Saskatchewan members.

I am sure everyone is on the run already preparing for a busy season! While youare out working on your jobsites this year, bring a camera (or use your smart phoneif it takes good quality pictures). Start planning now to be ready enter the 2015Landscape Awards!

When you enter the Landscape Awards you are not competing against othercompanies for marks, you only compete against yourself. Your best work can becomplimented by some prior planning - make sure your jobsite is clear of debris, hoses and equipment before you take your final pictures. This will go a long way toimproving the presentation to the judges.

Congratulations to all the award winners of the 2014 Landscape Awards. Great workand keep on sending in those pictures!

Watch the e-news for summer events and updates about member benefits. Enjoyyour spring!

2014 Landscape Awards

The Landscape Awards reflect the association's commitmentto creating and preserving the beauty of the urbanlandscape. The program is also designed to rewardindependent landscape contracting professionals whoexecute top quality landscape projects.

The Landscape Awards program has four main objectives:Encourage landscape contractors to be the best in their•fieldProvide a marketing opportunity to those companies•that receive an awardEncourage a company’s employees to aspire to•excellence Provide an opportunity to compete in the National•Awards of Landscape Excellence

Members can enter projects into nine different categoriescovering construction, maintenance and design. Each entryis evaluated using a set of criteria; the submissions are not

judged against each other. There are two award levels: aMerit Award goes to an entry that earns 70-84 points, andan Excellence Award goes to an entry earning 85 or morepoints. Entries that achieve Excellence status are eligible tobe selected for the National Awards of Landscape Excellence,a Canada-wide program developed by the Canadian NurseryLandscape Association. This year, the Landscape Awardsprogram in Saskatchewan received four entries.

We would like to thank this year’s volunteer judges for takingtheir assignment seriously and giving so generously of theirtime and expertise.

As a supervisor or owner you have an obligation tocommunicate to each of your employees how to work safelyand effectively. CNLA’s Onsite sessions have been designedto provide the framework for short, basic training sessionsto develop an informed, well-rounded employee.

It is recommended that you set a specific time aside eachweek, for example every Tuesday morning at 7:00 a.m., toconduct a 15-20 minute meeting based on the outlines inthe Onsite manual.

It's your responsibility to practice what you preach and be agood role model for both safety and work habits on the jobsite.

Here is a sample lesson from the Landscape Onsites manual.

Common Sense SafetyObjective: To introduce the concept of common sense safetyculture.

Lesson: In many instances, working safely is simply commonsense. By paying attention to your surroundings andusing common sense precautions you demonstrate thefundamentals of safety and accident prevention.

You use plenty of common sense to keep you safe in yourday-to-day activities. You look both ways before crossing abusy street. You protect your hands before removing a hotdish from the oven. You have practiced these common sensehabits so often that they are now automatic.

On the job it is important to use common sense to keep yousafe at work. Accidents often happen when people arerushed and not focused on the task at hand. A single lapseof attention can result in a serious, life-altering injury. Safetystarts with common sense and being attentive to yoursurroundings.

You wouldn’t oil or adjust unguarded moving machinery•You wouldn’t chip or grind without safety glasses•You wouldn’t look for a gas leak with a lit match•

Can you come up with five more common sense safety rulesfor the landscape site?

Common sense also means using personal protectiveequipment (PPE) whenever necessary.

Head protection: Staff should wear head protection at alltimes.

Hearing protection: Wear ear protection when noise levelsare over 85 db. Make sure hands are clean before touchinginsert-type ear protection. Muff or cap-type protectioncovers the entire ear.

Eye protection: Includes glasses and sunglasses with impact-resistant lenses and flexible or cushion-fitting ventilatedplastic goggles. Face shields protect against splashes andsmall flying particles, but not against heavy impact. Toimprove impact resistance, wear safety glasses or gogglesunder the face shield.

Foot protection: Safety boots should be worn on the job atall times.

Hand protection: Leather work gloves provide good grippingpower and protect hands.

Sunscreen: Applying waterproof sunscreen several times aday should be considered part of your personal protectiveequipment during the spring and summer months.

Common sense safety also means watching out for thesafety of your fellow workers. Speak up if they are puttingthemselves or someone else at risk.
