D E S I G N C O N C E P TThe design goal for Marbella Resort is to channel Key West ’s unique culture and scenic beauty. The freeform organization of the pool mirrors the relaxed island culture while the layout and amenities appeal to the variety of people attracted to Key West. The focal point is the shipwreck spanning the pool. The sl ide highl ights both the excitement of adventure as well as Key West ’s beginnings: a small island off a coastal reef where trade ships went astray, bringing fortuitous goods, culture and more people to enjoy the party.

The Forest Garden illustrates a Southeastern Piedmont forest

ecosystem with native deciduous canopy trees, understory trees and

shrubs, and woodland flowers.

The Rose Garden celebrates the vibrancy and beauty of flowers

and draws in the chief pollinators and important insects essential to the health and vitality of the

garden.

Planted beds of annual vegeta-bles are surrounded by fruiting trees in the center of the garden to create a space that functions

as the central hub and work-space. Harvesting raised beds and utility storage all share in

unity of purpose and form.

The single greatest lesson the garden teaches is that our relationship to the planet need not be zero sum... if we bother to try, and find ways to provide for ourselves without diminishing the world.-Michael Pollan

The Cleveland Road Elementary School Garden,

Aerial view of school plot with inset of drawing

conceived by one its teachers,

became an opportunity to create

something functional as well as

beautiful. On January 17, 2011,

thirty volunteers planted sixteen

trees in the native forest garden

with a grant from Hands On

Northeast Georgia.
