After the contaminants are mapped and the pockets of high concentration are removed, the remaining soils are treated through natural biological processes. Once stable, the site becomes a keystone to the surrounding low-income community.

Th e goal of the program is to provide a foundation of essiential knowledge and life skills. Th e Living Learning program partnership with the University of Louisville provides students of any age a safe living space and free education. In return, the students work for one of the businesses or industries on site.

While this addresses a crucial need in the community, the students of University of Louisville gain valuable teaching experience, management skills, and assistance with engineering research to improve High Speed Rail technology.

Working in small teams, this assignment challenged us to assess the built environments of Kentuckys tourism regions. Utilizing GIS software, we compiled a vast spectrum of diff erent layout patterns from the cities in our region. Th ese patterns were catalogued and compared with the other tourism regions to create a booklet of Kentuckys developmental typologies.

In addition to gathering patterns for the booklet, teams were challenged to research the community issues of their region. After contacting several city planners and public offi cials and concluded that as commercial development occurs, it has decentralized community growth and isolated historic downtowns. Extrapolating these observations further, the team began to understand why the citizens have voiced concerns of a loss of town identity.

INDEPENDENT PROJECT

Th rough an outside opportunity with lexington's newest elementary school, this project presented an opportunity to lead a small design team of two 1st year landscape architecture students through the creative and technical process. While the project is still ongoing, the renderings we provided the client helped to secure a grant for project construction; which began in November.

Th is class design competition consisted of working with Th e Early childhood Development Center at the University of Kentucky to provide plans and cost estimates for a creative shade structure. While this design was not selected by the client to be built, the project proved to be a fun oppertunity to see a design through to fruition.

Th e design emphasizes the importance of building pacement, circulation, and open space to improve the health of the community. By comparing the codes of Lexington and Bern, Switzerland we determined how Lexington code is restricting designs that are more walkable and promote active lifestyles

cROSSROAD cOMMUNITIES of Casey County

A recent UKLA graduate and myself were selected to conduct fi eldwork during a two month summer internship through the Department of Landscape Architecture and Archeology. Th e survey and planning grant attempted to address a long-standing defi cit in the number of surveyed historic resources in Casey County, Kentucky.

Th is was a great oppertunity to further develop my photography skills, and inspired my interest in Historical Preservation.

Falmouth, KY community Project

Working with the town of Falmouth, our class learned to work as a team to address community needs. Focus was placed focused on creating a layout that mixes commercial and residential developments, moves pedestrians away from the highway, and provides a variety of public spaces. After my internship, Ive learned the best way to understand a community is to dive in! By meeting the locals and thoroughly exploring their town on my own, I was able to pinpoint critical issues that we would have otherwise missed.

UK Healthtrac Hydrotherapy Center

Th e University of Kentucky Healtrac initiative provided the basis for the 5th year Fall capstone studio. Th e goal was to design a layout for a proposed hydrotherapy center and complete a set of construction documents. Each student produced a layout plan, grading plan, pipe sizing, lighting schedule, planting schedule, and irrigation plan.
