Landforms
Miss Bellott’s 6th Grade Class
• What kind of landforms can you think of?
• Make a list in your group.
What Did You Come Up With?
• Islands• Mountains• Cliffs• Caves• Lakes• Rivers• Canyons
• Plateaus• Volcanos• Deserts• Beaches• Oceans• Valleys• Anything else?
• How are landforms formed?
• How did they get here?
• Make some hypotheses in your group.
How Are They Made?
• Some kinds of rocks found on Earth form from volcanic material called magma. These rocks are known as igneous.
• Another type of rock, known as sedimentary, forms from layers of materials such as sand, small rocks, and minerals that are cemented together by water from rain and chemicals.
• The third type of rock, metamorphic, forms deep underground from other kinds of rock changing due to heat, pressure, and the mixture of chemicals.
• All of these rocks are affected by water and erosion.
• Water running over rocks can cut deep holes in the earth, forming caves and canyons.
• Erosion, the wearing down of the land, can be caused by water as well as by wind, storms, and ice from glaciers.
Garden of the Gods • Located in Shawnee National Forest
in Southern Illinois• Formed from the erosion of an
ancient sea• They are formed of sandstone, a
sedimentary rock• It is being preserved by being a part
of the national forest
Your Turn• Your group now gets to research
your own landform!• You must answer these questions:
• Where is your landform found?• How did your landform form?• What forces of nature caused it to form?• How is your landform being preserved?• Also, provide a picture of your landform.
• You must also state what material your landform is made out of, and what kind of rock it is: igneous, sedimentary, or metamorphic
Choose a Landform
• Here are some options:•Carlsbad Caverns•Antelope Canyon•Pumpkin Patch Concretions•Garden of the Gods (Colorado)•Grand Canyon
Can’t Find One?
• Choose a place you’ve been on vacation• Choose a place you’ve seen on TV• Choose a place you’ve read about in a
book• Choose a place you’ve seen pictures of
• CHECK YOUR LANDFORM WITH ME BEFORE YOU START YOUR PROJECT!
What Then?
• Once your group has all of the information on your landform you will need to present your project to the class
• You may use the overhead, the chalkboard, the computer, or posterboards
• These are due on February 16!
