Aloha everyone!
Happy Valentine’s Day to all of you! Welcome to all the new members of Lanakila Multi-Purpose Senior Center. It is wonderful to see everyone enjoying their social, physical fitness, music and dance, arts and crafts, recreational, and community service activities. We hope you are enjoying the Winter Classes that are being offered. There have been a number of new and interesting classes. Thank you to the members for suggesting these classes and for the volunteer instructors that have stepped forward to teach the classes and to lead the new groups. We have about 40 classes and groups now utilizing our Center very well.
We have also increased the number of community groups that have their meetings here with the convenient location and free parking that is available. Meeting spaces at the Center, especially during the afternoon hours, from noon to 2:30 p.m., and on two Saturdays a month from 8:30 to 11:00 a.m., are available for use. I have also conducted about 150 personal tours of the center last year and am happy to do so. Feel free to call me at 847-1322.
The Leadership Conference for Club Officers, instructors, assistant instructors, group facilitators, and reception and kitchen volunteers went well. It was great to have everyone get to know each other and the activities that each leader helps to organize for the members of LMPSC. There has been a request to hold CPR training classes and other emergency preparedness opportunities as well as time set aside to suggest improvements to help our Center continuously be the best that it can be for our members and the broader community. We will have sign-up sheets for these events at the reception desk in March.
There is a master calendar of 2018 LMPSC special events that each club officer and instructor, reception and kitchen volunteer, and staff was given. The 2018 Calendar of Events is also on our Center’s bulletin board for you to peruse at your leisure.
Lanakila’s Show and Sell event will be on Friday, Feburary 9, 2018, from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Ono food and great deals on clothing, crafts, plants, household items, sports, games, and other fun and useful items will be available for purchase. This is a quarterly event that helps the clubs, classes, and center raise funds for the programs they have throughout the year. We welcome donations of all kinds to the Center for this event. Please call me if you are not sure if the donation is appropriate or want to let us know that you are dropping off the donations.
We hope you join us for our Valentine’s Program on February 14, 2018, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for dancing, lei-making, craft making, lunch and a special performance by the Silver Foxes. The lunch is $7.00 and you can sign-up and pay at the front desk.
Me ke aloha pumehana (with warmest love), Susie Chun Oakland, Program Coordinator

OKINAWA NENCHOSHA CLUB UPDATE
By Irene Yamashita
After a long holiday break, everyone was anxious to be back on Jan. 18 to start the New Year. It was nice to be able to greet one another and enjoy the fellowship again. Being true to our culture, our first program was one of traditional dances by members of MitsukoToguchi-Nakasone Sensei’s classes with the opening number being one that was performed for royalty before the King of the Ryukyus. Today, it is the custom to open an auspicious event with this dance. A variety of dances followed, depicting life in Okinawa whether it was working in the fields with hats made from palm branches, a country girl’s dance, or rowing a ferry boat between Naha and another island. Several of the dances performed were choreographed by ToguchiSensei. The festive morning ended with members joining in dancing Asadoya Yunta and the Kachashi, before receiving a special treat: Mochi, a symbol of long life.
On Jan. 25 we celebrated January birthdays with eleven of our members being honored. Special honorees were Amy Tari (98) and Nancy Ichikawa (97). Congratulations and God bless each birthday celebrant with continued good health. Special birthday entertainment was provided by Elsie Kawamoto’s
Karaoke Group. As 2018 is the Year of the Dog, the program began by recognizing our members who have dogs which was an interesting way to start the Year of the Dog. They were the lucky recipients of some gift cards. Also recognized were our birthday celebrants who each was presented with a special gift. Mahalo for the thoughtful gestures and generosity. Karaoke Singers were Mae Fujimoto, Marcia Hiromasa, Gary Miyata, Myrtle Nyuha, Nady Bradbury, David Chun, Joan Momohara, Duana Shimamoto, Nora Masaki, Jean Yamanaka. Clarence Kane, and Sensei Elsie Kawamoto who sang the final number.
Special thanks to Amy Tari for providing pastry and fruit snacks for everyone to enjoy as she celebrated her 98th birthday. Ippe Nifee Debiru!

Way back when, Valentine’s Day was all about giving and receiving homemade valentine cards from our classmates. Remember those puppy love crushes we had. Today, celebrating Valentines Day has become so sophisticated where lavish gifts are exchanged by couples. So to keep up with the times, let's celebrate this special day by showing our love and affection to all the people we care about. It's a good reason to get together with family and friends and have a good time Of course receiving chocolate and flowers from a loved one wouldn't hurt.
On January 8, we had a great start for 2018 when Jean Sugihara played the taiko drums with so much energy. Kumu Harmony blessed JCC members with her mele oli. Her Lanakila Halau did four hula numbers as they danced to Keokina Kane's beautiful singing with so much aloha.. On the 22, we were entertained by Sensei Misako Yagi's Yui Buyo class. They performed Okinawan dancing and singing and of course everyone participated in the lively kachashi finale.
Birthday celebrants celebrating 90+ years for February are: Hisao Baba (90+); Mary Jones (90+); Lorraine Sawai (90+). Tanjoubi OmedetouGozaimasu!!!

PORTUGUESE CULTURAL CLUB UPDATE
By Puna Frank
Bom dia everyone…Happy 2018 again if you missed January’s issue.
Wish you were here to enjoy the great things happening not only to the center but also for members to improve our health and well-being. Time flies by too quickly so come on down and join the ukulele classes, Tai-Chi, Lei-Making, or any other group you would like to try! You’ll amaze yourself. Oh! There’s also a brain training and a sign language class.
On a sadder note, to Frances D. and Mary J., our long-time members,…GET WELL SOON! You are missed. Love to our friend, Lorraine R. Best wishes too!
