    TH!!!

We just missed the school bus.Dont worry. I heard the principal sayno child will be left behind.--S. Adelman & L. Taylor

I attended a mini conference last weekend about the achievementgap. One of the many remarks and phrases that stuck in my mind was: Nochild left a DIME!While I know that money cannot cure or erase all of ourchallenges, it certainly does help as we seek funds for academicintervention, mentors and mental health services, ongoing professionaldevelopment, and resources to advance and engage the multiple talents ofour children. So, though I certainly enjoy the community building, laughter, food, and music that make our annual auction so memorable, I hope that asmany of you as possible will attend this years event because our schoolgreatly needs the additional funds.

In response to concerns about discipline (self-regulation) obtainedfrom our LeConte Survey, our school has purchased a program to teachsocial skills and conflict mediation and is also pursuing funds to hire a part -time case manager. We will need about $15,000 to create a more caring andsupportive climate so that no child falls between the cracks. During theconference, one of the speakers discussed the need to deflate the emotionalballoon that exists within some of our students the moment they enter theclassroom. In short, our school must develop better ways to support students

affected by family crisis, such as sudden death, divorce, unemployment, hospitalization, abandonment, etc. With the assistance of a case managerand other related systems of support, we are hoping to help students relievesome of their disappointment, anger, and fears in ways that are safe andappropriate. We heard your feedback and we will definitely address yourconcerns with your help and support.

Onward this is a packed month: Teacher/staff appreciation weekand standardized testing begin on Monday, May 3. Thank you for any andall of the ways you participate in our annual appreciation week I knowhow much your cards, flowers, and thank yous mean to our teachers andstaff. The Spring Auction is on May 16. May is Asian-American HeritageMonth, and a group of families are planning special events and

performances that will begin the week of May 17. Our students wantanother Talent Show and we are planning a Spring Festival for early June.

Lastly, second through fifth grade students now have access to anonline multiplication game at school. The website, www.bigbrainz.com,offers games that motivate students to learn multiplication facts. Weencourage you to let your children play these games at home too, becausethe practice really helps. The directions for downloading the system forhome use are attached. The students password is mfacts.

Steps to Improve AchievementIn preparation for the next school year, we will begin implementation of a Response to Intervention Program(RtI). This means we will set up a system that tracks all students entry level skills and any academicintervention services required to insure that all students perform near, at, or above grade level. The goal of RtIis to develop practices that catch students before they start to decline and to provide support for the classroomteacher through tutors, special education staff, and volunteers who can work with students one-to-one.Though we have always provided after school support for students performing below grade level, this will beour first proactive tracking system and school wide support system.

Mosaic Project Featured in Yes Magazine

For several years, LeConte fifth graders have attended the Mosaic Project, a five-day outdoor camp designedto help students understand and develop conflict resolution skills. LeConte students Erick Linares andRebecca Torres are quoted in a recent article about Mosaic songwriter and musician Brett Dennen in YesMagazine (see http://www.yesmagazine.org/issues/america-the-remix/brett-dennen-my-most-important-songs). The article provides a nice description of the camp and how the students benefit from attending. Asannounced last month, due to anticipated fund shortages, ourSchool Governance Counciland fifth gradeteachers are planning to redirect the funds usually spent on Mosaic to other important needs at LeConte nextyear.

Willard Pool Threatened With Closure June 8 Election on Measure C

Willard Pool, our neighborhood public pool, is slated to be closed forever on July 1 because the City ofBerkeley no longer has funds to perform needed repairs and pay for staff. Some of our students takeswimming lessons there through our afterschool programs or go swimming at the pool throughout thesummer. In the June 8 election, Berkeley voters will be asked to vote on Measure C, the Berkeley PublicPools Bond.If Measure C passes, it will provide the funds needed to renovate the City pools and to keepWillard pool open. At the last PTA meeting, our PTA voted to endorse Measure C. You can find out more

about Measure C and the effort to save Willard Pool at www.berkeleypools.org or read the ballot measure atww.ci.berkeley.ca.us/ContentDisplay.aspx?id=50932.

LeConte Students Enhance Learning With Free Educational Software

We encourage you to have your child support their learning after school or on weekends through the CompassLearning educational software, provided free by the District. It is easy to access from home or school. We arevery pleased by the number of students who are already utilizing this program to make themselves smarter,as Principal Wilson says. This software is aligned with state and national standards and provides a stimulating(and fun!), customizedlearning environment for each child. Compass Learning is at www.childu.com. Toget your child started, you will need your childs user name and password. Most user names and passwordsfollow the following standard format: User Name: LeCFirstNameLastInitial. Password: FirstInitialLastInitialSchool: BUSD For example, John Smith has a user name of LeCJohnS and a password of js. Contact August
