Good health is determined by many factors, one ofwhich is the body’s ability to detoxify effectively. Thisis the process whereby toxins, compounds that haveharmful effects on cells, are either neutralised orexcreted from the body. Exposure to toxic substancesis unavoidable, as they are present everywhere – inthe atmosphere, the food we eat and the water we

drink. A significant amount of toxins are alsogenerated within the body as a result of the

metabolic processes that go on within it.

The liver, alongside the intestines and kidneys,is a primary organ of detoxification. All thetoxins that accumulate in the body passthrough the liver to render them harmless;as such, the liver bears a largeresponsibility in cleansing the body.Modern living has seen a tremendousrise in the toxic load the liver has todeal with, leading to an overburdenedliver in some individuals. It isbelieved that conditions such aspsoriasis, acne, chronic headaches, inflammatory and autoimmunediseases, and chronic fatigue mayin part be a consequence of poorliver function.

1 Mobilisation withlipotrophic nutrients

The production of bile from the liveris vital to detoxification since thisfluid acts to remove fat-solubletoxins from the blood. Low secretionof bile may result in cholesterol andother fat-soluble toxins building up inthe liver. There are numerouslipotrophic agents, substancesknown to encourage the expulsion offat from the liver, which may help toencourage detoxification.

Choline and InositolCholine is known to play a vital role in fat metabolism by helpingto promote the flow of fat through the liver. Lack of choline maycause stagnation of fat in the liver and in turn hamper its capacityto break down fat. Its importance in liver health is evident from thescientific research, for example, in one study subjects who wereput on a choline-deficient diet developed fatty infiltration of theliver and other signs of liver dysfunction.

As inositol works in close alliance with choline to assist fatmetabolism in the liver, it is useful to take these two nutrients in combination.

L-Methionine The amino acid methionine assists in the breakdown of fats andso may help to prevent an accumulation of fat in the liver. Possiblyas a result of methionine’s ability to raise levels of another aminoacid taurine, which is known to stimulate bile flow. In addition, methionine’s potential antioxidant effects may help to protect theliver from free radicals, the harmful by-products of detoxification.

Artichoke Artichoke is commonly used for assisting detoxification owing toits choleretic effects (gentle bile stimulating properties). Cynarin,a key active compound in artichoke, has been shown to havepowerful antioxidant properties and therefore may help to preventcell damage in the liver. Poor bile flow is associated with fattymeal intolerance and irregular bowel habits and studies showartichoke to be of use for these conditions.

The level used in scientific research of note, is generally 320mgof artichoke leaf extract, standardised to contain 5% cynarin.

2 Prevention against re-circulation

Liver detoxification occurs in two phases. Phase 1relies on the presence of various nutrients such asriboflavin (vitamin B2), niacin (vitamin B3), folic acid, cobalamin (vitamin B12), pyridoxine (vitamin B6) andiron, all of which can be found in a good multivitaminand mineral complex. Completion of phase 2requires an adequate supply of antioxidants, whichare believed to bind to intermediary toxins to allowtheir expulsion from the body. Lack of antioxidantsmay result in the reabsorption of toxins in the body.

Alpha Lipoic Acid Alpha Lipoic acid is considered to be an excellentantioxidant particularly because it works in bothwater and fat environments unlike most antioxidantssuch as vitamin C and vitamin E which are specific towater and fat respectively. It is popular as a liversupport since it may protect the liver from free radicaldamage and help promote elimination of toxins fromthe body. For detoxification purposes a dose of 250 to500 grams is suggested, depending on an individual’stoxic state.

Glutathione Large stores of glutathione are found in the liverwhere it acts to detoxify harmful compounds suchas heavy metals, solvents and pesticides.Glutathione binds to these fat-soluble toxins toconvert them into a water-soluble form, which is important since fat-soluble toxins are not easilyexcreted from the body. Additionally, glutathione isa strong antioxidant and so may protect the liverfrom free radicals.

L-Glutamine Glutamine is often used in practice to help healand strengthen the gut wall in situations such asleaky gut syndrome. It is thought to act as fuel forcells and may assist in sealing gaps in the gut wall. This is an important function since a damaged gutwall may allow toxins to be reabsorbed into thebody. Antioxidant function may also be enhancedby glutamine.

As a relevant dose of glutamine for gut function isquite hard to achieve from the level afforded bycapsules, a powder form is preferable for ease ofuse. It should also be in its natural ‘L’ free-form asthis means it is ready to be absorbed and used bythe body.

Green TeaResearchers have shown green tea (Camelliasinensis) to be a powerful antioxidant and freeradical scavenger. These effects have beenattributed to compounds known as catechins(polyphenols) found in high quality green tea leafextracts, which may help to support detoxification.Experts recommend using a green tea extractstandardised to provide 250mg catechins toensure a relevant potency.

3 EliminationOnce toxins have been metabolised into lessharmful molecules they need to be eliminated toprevent them accumulating and being reabsorbedinto the blood. The healthy functioning of thebowel is necessary in order for this to occurproperly. A balanced diet incorporating plenty offruit and vegetables and adequate water intakealongside the use of supplements may help toregulate bowel movements.

Fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS)FOS (fructo-oligosaccharides), a source of solublefibre, has been studied for its effects on bowelhealth. Research has demonstrated that FOS drawswater into the waste matter helping to gently bulkup the stools and facilitate easier bowel motions.Furthermore, FOS has a prebiotic effect meaningthat it may help to feed the friendly gut bacteria, which produce substances that stimulate peristalsis.

Use FOS that is derived naturally from chicory root, since it is only the natural form of FOS that hasbeen scientifically proven to support bowel health.‘Synthetic’ versions, usually made from sugar beet,do not offer the same health benefits.

Artichoke Artichoke is purported to regulate bowel movementsby stimulating the production of bile and in turnencouraging peristalsis. It is especially useful to useartichoke alongside FOS in cases where irregularbowel movements are a longstanding issue. A highpotency artichoke extract standardised upon 5%cynarin is recommended since this is the level usedin scientific studies of note.

Acidophilus The friendly bacteria in the gut are vital for optimalgut health yet many factors such as medication, stress and illness are known to deplete levels.Similarly, the large intestine needs re-seeding aftera detox programme and the easiest way for this tobe achieved is through a probiotic supplement. Thesuggested level is 10 billion live bacteria per capsule.
