Our Annual November Canned Food
Drive continues throughout this month and will
conclude at our traditional Thanksgiving Day
Mass, 9:30am, on Thursday November 27. (If it is not already an
annual custom, plan on attending this year!) Your gifts of canned
goods not only provide for Thanksgiving and Christmas meals, but
also for the day-to-day needs of many families here at St Charles as
well as at our inner-city sister parish, Our Lady of Peace. Please
check the list in this bulletin for the items we need the most. Bring
your canned goods to Mass on the weekend or at any time during
the week.
Parish Council members are reminded of this month’s
meeting on Thursday, November 13, at 7:45pm in the John Paul II
Room (second floor) of the Parish Activities Center. We will
welcome a guest speaker, Terrie Baldwin, from the Diocesan
Evangelization Office.
From the Mail Bag: here’s a nice note from the Evangelizing
Sisters of Mary: “Thank you for your wonderful hospitality on the two
weekends last August. Thank you for engaging the beloved
parishioners of St Charles to wholeheartedly support the “Sisters’
Shower.” The good will and emphasis that you put forth are deeply
appreciated. In November we will welcome three more of our
Sisters to the convent here in Cleveland. You are in our prayers for
your ministry at the great parish of St Charles.”
Your friends in Christ, Sister Restituta Sister Jacinta
A few weeks back, Father Terry wrote an article for the
parish bulletin about proper reception of the Eucharist: how the
communicant should position hands, a reverent nod of the head, and
a firm “Amen” after the minister says “the Body of Christ” and
“the Blood of Christ.” There is a human tendency to become “too
casual” in our attitudes and behaviors—even in the most sacred
areas of life.
It is not my practice to chastise and correct, week after
week. Who wants to come to church and “get yelled at?” However,
sometimes a few words of encouragement are in order.
Every once in a while, with our crowded lives, we run a
little late. But chronic tardiness is a habit with some folks. For
those who need correction, let’s make the effort to get to church on
time. One of “the St Charles rules” that I give to priests newly-
assigned here is “start Mass on time.” Promptness is a courtesy we
owe to one another.
I am sure that there is an occasional good reason to leave
Mass early. But I cannot believe that so many folks—especially
those who sit near the doors—are dealing with emergencies. It is
especially upsetting to see people receive Communion and then exit.
Everyone should return to the bench for some time in thanksgiving.
I expect the staff to greet parishioners after weekend Masses.
I would expect the people to “stick around “and “be greeted.”
Once the Eucharistic Prayer begins, folks should stay in
the pews. “Taking a break,” especially around the time of the
Consecration, is especially distracting.
We all need occasional reminders: let’s keep our church
tidy: return missals/hymnals to the racks, don’t leave bulletins, etc
in the pews—have a thought for the folks attending the next Mass.
And most recently, let’s not text in church!
