Solar Heat and Heat Pump To tlw t:ditor:
At a short tdopbon<' co, T.V. eomm<•rcial of a solar installation cumbim'<l with a heat pump, th<• priet' quoted wns $10,000. This t·nuld possibly ill• reduced through quantity production to $7,000 per installation.
Being acquainted with the heat pump's pcrformanc<• on both Long Island. N.Y. and Florida and Its dt•pendabillty to heat and cool If properly installed, I can ace the advantag~ of combining both sys· tems in new deVelopment. l .. Pcc Iaiiy desirned to take maximum advantage of a new heatin1 system. It would eliminate the necesalty of a boiler and oil storaa:e tank, as ••verything run• by electrkity.
At preaent the 110iar heat instal· lations art too expensive as they also require a conventional supplementary h1'8tin1 system. One mllllt also add the cost of panel replacemt'nt about every five yean.
I penonally favor the heat pump as being a most ctllcient, cconomJ .. tal heatinr and coolin11 system re quirlnr no additional means of h<•atlng,

No Figures on Greenbelt 'l'o tht• ~:dltor:
It wouldn't bo fair to tht• citizens of Greenbelt if Mr. Dove's letter of Aug. 26 were not answered. Yes, I have attend<'<! numerous council meetings and I havr talked with otllicalll from the state, the county ari\1 H.U.D.
No official has aald that the c] .. derly of Greenbelt will be given priority_! Concern Expressed Over Future of B-\1 Pkwy.
by AI Skolnik Highways and parkways occupied the attention of city council
at its special meeting on .Monday, August :lO. lntwrluced for first reading was a rcsolutioh for retaining control of the Balli· more-Washington Parkway by the National Park Service (NPS). Congressional legislation now provides for the transfer of the Parkway to the Maryland Department of Transportation (DOT) after the Parkway is widened and other ''improvements" are , completed upgrading 1t to Federal interstate standards.

Clu·wrly and Gree~•belt, a- bids. long with other communities along tho Parkway, fear that bringing the Parkway up to interstate standards may altPr many of its present park-like quailtics and <i<-stroy its effectiveness as a plras:mt and scenic £>ntrance to th~ Nation's capital. '
City manager James C:h'Sf sa'd that other companies hl\\'e generaily been reluctant to bid for mu · nicipal liability insurance. Northwestern is offering reduced coverage at substantially increased prices - about $15.000 above thr budgeted amount. A member of the audiencP suggested that the city look into the purchase of work-mPn·~ compensation insurance from tiw Maryland State Accident Fund.

FJeanor Roosevelt Sr. Bigb Has Smooth Opening Day
Eleanor Roosevelt had a quiet opening on Sept. 7. The buses started rolling up to the new buildIng at about 9 a.m., d!acharlinc students who were routed Into the cafeteria (known as the "Commons") before golnc to claas. Con· slderlng that the acbool Is vast, with rooms far apart, that the alrcond!tionlq was not worklq In several rooms, and that many tee, chers had exchanced clauea In order to balance teachlnc loads, the day went 11111ootbl,y. Firat period lasted lonpr than the othen, since the counselor& and 'vlee-prlnclpals were bUlly chanetnc schedulel and assigning new students to elaase•: and the lunch period had to be extended since the cafeteria lines moved more slowly than anticipated, but for the most part students got to class on time and teachers managed to take accurate rolla and give students a· !I rat-day-of-school description of the courses and lay down classroom rules. ("Please try to bchav .. 88 If this Is a busl· ness oftlce. You have something to learn here .• , ")
To be sure there were still workmen busy on the building ltaelf, and the teachers often appeared somewhat vague as to h•strucUons to students on reachln& the next class, but twenty minutes after the first elaas had bccun the school had settled Into that quiet that Indicate• that the new school year . Is under way. Lunch Is to be ~n the fifth period, and the cafeteria served over 1000 · lunches, exceedIng expectatiOIII.
-OpenH--Prlnc!pal Ray Ocden said that an
open house Is planned for all parenta In the near future. This Is to be during a weekend, It Is hoped1 so that more parents wJII be. able to attsnd. At that time teachers will be preeent to meet the parents and the school will be open for ln•pection.
An open house for parents of ltUdents In the competitive athletics pracram 11 scheduled next week.
The school at pre•ent bu only 9th, loth, and 11th crade students. For the most part claues are of about 27 students or fewer In the academic subjects, and no teacher h88 morr than three subjects to teach.
