THE HISTORY OF CANDY CANESBy Brenna Hall

So, you buy candy canes for the kids or for the decorations every year but do you really know where they come from? The candy cane is a Christmas tradition that many hold dear but nobody really knows why. Let’s face it -- the only things we really know about candy canes is that they taste good and that they are red and white.

Whether the story of the candy cane is a legend or if it is true is not certain, but this is how the story goes: About two hundred-thirty years ago at the Cologne Cathedral, the children that went to church there were really loud and noisy. They often moved around and would not pay attention to the choirmaster.

This was especially difficult for the choirmaster when they were supposed to be sitting still for the long living Nativity ceremony. So to keep the children quiet, he gave them a long, white, sugar candy stick. He couldn’t give them chocolate or anything like that because the people at that church would think it was sacrilegious. So he gave them the stick and he bent it on the end to look like a cane. It was meant to look like a shepherd’s cane, and so it reminded the children of the shepherds at Jesus’ birth.

In 1847, a German-Swedish immigrant in Wooster, Ohio put candy canes on his Christmas tree and soon others were doing the same. Sometime around 1900 candy canes came to look more like what we know them as today with the red stripes and peppermint flavoring.

Some people say the white color represents the purity of Jesus Christ and the red stripes are for the wounds he suffered. They also sometimes say that the peppermint flavoring represents the hyssop herb used for purifying and spoken of in the Bible. The shape also looks like the letter “J” for Jesus, not just a shepherd’s cane. It is possible that these things were added for religious symbols, but there is no evidence that is true.

Around 1920, a man in Georgia named Bob McCormack wanted to make candy canes for his family and friends. He later started mass-producing candy canes for his own business which he named Bob’s Candies. This is where many of our candy canes come from today.

Dear Santa: I’ve been a good mom all year. I’ve fed, cleaned and cuddled my two

children on demand, visited the doctor’s office more than my doctor, sold sixty-two cases of candy bars to raise money to plant a shade tree on the school playground and figured out how to attach nine patches onto my daughter’s girl scout sash with staples and a glue gun.

I was hoping you could spread my list out over several Christmases, since I had to write this letter with my son’s red crayon, on the back of a receipt in the laundry room between cycles, and who knows when I’ll find anymore free time in the next 18 years. Here are my Christmas wishes:

I’d like a pair of legs that don’t ache after a day of chasing kids (in any color, except purple, which I already have). I want arms that don’t flap in the breeze but are strong enough to carry a screaming toddler out of the candy aisle in the grocery store. I’d also like a waist, since I lost mine somewhere in the seventh month of my last pregnancy. If you’re hauling big ticket items this year I’d like a car with fingerprint resistant windows and a radio that only plays adult music.

It would be nice to have a television that doesn’t broadcast any programs containing talking animals; and a refrigerator with a secret compartment behind the crisper where I can hide to talk on the phone.

On the practical side, I could use a talking daughter doll that says, “Yes, Mommy” to boost my parental confidence, along with one potty-trained

toddler, two kids who don’t fight and three pairs of jeans that will zip all the way up without the use of power tools. I could also use a recording of Tibetan monks chanting, “Don’t eat in the living

room” and ‘Take your hands off your brother,’ because my voice seems to be just out of my children’s hearing range and can only

be heard by the dog.

And please don’t forget the Playdoh Travel Pack, the hottest stocking stuffer this year for mothers of preschoolers. It comes in three fluorescent colors and is guaranteed to crumble on any carpet making the in-laws’ house seem just like mine.

If it’s too late to find any of these products, I’d settle for enough time to brush my teeth and comb my hair in the same morning, or the luxury of eating food warmer than room temperature without it being served in a Styrofoam container.

If you don’t mind I could also use a few Christmas miracles to brighten the holiday season. Would it be too much trouble to declare ketchup a vegetable? It will clear my conscience immensely. It would be helpful if you could coerce my children to help around the house without demanding payment as if they were the bosses of an organized crime family; or if my toddler didn’t look so cute sneaking downstairs to eat contraband ice cream in his pajamas at midnight.

Well, Santa, the buzzer on the dryer is ringing and my son saw my feet under the laundry room door. I think he wants his crayon back. Have a safe trip and remember to leave your wet boots by the chimney and come in and dry off by the fire so you don’t catch cold. Help yourself to cookies on the table but don’t eat too many or leave crumbs on the carpet.

GARDENING TIPS FOR DECEMBER• If a long flowering period is desired, pansies should be placed in their permanent beds not later than this month. Fertilize monthly with manure, super-phosphate or a liquid high-phosphate product. Keep flowers picked for more bloom.

• Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month.

• Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs, spurias and sweet peas (after they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such as 13-13-13; Louisiana iris with cotton seed meal and manure.

• Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to lesson cold weather damage. May acidify again.

• Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum and other varieties of lilies. Mulch.

• Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily damaged.

• Don’t forget to provide food and fresh water for birds. More birds die from lack of water than lack of food.

CYPRESS HOOPS INVITATIONALThe Cy-Fair Educational Foundation will host the Cypress Hoops Invitational on Thursday, December 8th - Saturday, December 10th. As a partner with the district, our goal is to create a successful high school basketball tournament that engages the entire community. Profits from the tournament will benefit our “Donate to Educate” program. This program provides college scholarships for district students as well as staff development grants to CFISD for innovative and creative teacher training. North Cypress Sports Medicine Center has generously agreed to underwrite the event for the second year.

The tournament will have twenty-four teams including the ten CFISD boy’s varsity teams and fourteen out of district teams. Games will be held at the Berry Center, Cy-Lakes High School, Cy-Ranch High School and Langham Creek High School. Tickets can be purchased at the Berry Center during normal business hours. Ticket prices are: $20 for a 3-day tournament pass, $3 for an adult single game ticket and $2 for a student single game ticket.

CFISD – SALUTE TO OUR HEROESSaturday, February 11th at The Onmi Westside Houston. Salute to Our Heroes will honor the brave men and women who have served to preserve our freedom and liberty. Proceeds from this event will go to an endowment, enabling graduating students from CFISD to attend college. Inspirational speakers, entertainment, live and silent auctions will highlight this special evening. Tickets and sponsorship opportunities are available.

GUEST SPEAKER: Keni Thomas. Army Ranger Involved in “Black Hawk Down” Mission Keni Thomas, Bronze Star for Valor recipient, is an engaging speaker whose story captivates audiences from beginning to end. The highly successful movie “Black Hawk Down” is based on his Army Company’s mission in Mogadishu, Somalia. In addition to speaking, Thomas is a recording artist with two critically acclaimed projects.

CFISD VIPS FALL CONFERENCEIt was barely 8:00 AM in the morning on Friday, Oct. 14th. They were beginning to arrive. Upon checking in; name badges were handed out along with a bright red folder full of the day’s agenda and the conference material. There was even an eco-friendly tote bag full of coupons and goodies generously donated by local area businesses. The room was huge and full of tables decorated with bright paper blocks spelling out the main part of this year’s theme, “Teamwork.”

This was the annual VIPS Fall Conference held by the CFISD VIPS Executive Board at the Berry Center in Cypress. The schedule was full.

It consisted of everything from learning how to turn a popsicle stick into a fun treat for a teacher or volunteer to tips on helping our students handle stress. The attendees could choose from a variety of 50 minute sessions that covered topics such as: Internet Safety; Reaching Out to Diverse Volunteers; Guidelines and Best Practices for Fundraising; and even Taking Care of Your Personal Health While Maintaining a Busy Lifestyle.

Something was most impressive about this conference to one volunteer. This audience of 200 plus was comprised of men and women, volunteers and school staff - not limited to Cy-Fair ISD. There were 4 other area districts represented at this conference: Alief ISD, Fort Bend ISD, Houston ISD and Spring ISD. The current budget environment has left our school districts vying to be first in line for every resource of financial and physical support they can find. But for one day in October, the district boundary lines came down. There was no competition. There was no hidden agenda. Despite the traffic and everyday challenges, educators and volunteers from schools all over our county came together for a common purpose: improving their volunteer program thereby affecting the students in a positive way. This was simply an opportunity to attend an event that focused on several different areas of how to build on their volunteer resources in order to enhance the children’s education. While that volunteer sat looking out over the diverse crowd; she couldn’t help but see a universal theme, “Yes, in this room, it’s truly all about the students.”

LARGEST RECOGNIZED DISTRICT IN TEXAS - ONCE AGAIN

For the fourth consecutive year, Cypress-Fairbanks ISD is the largest Recognized school district in Texas. The Texas Education Agency (TEA) confirmed that an appeal was granted and CFISD’s accountability rating was changed to Recognized. The increase in rating came as a result of an appeal to recalculate the TAKS science passing percentage for Dean Middle School. The decision changed the campus’ accountability rating to Academically Acceptable.

STAAR TEST TO REPLACE TAKS TESTSTAAR, State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, has replaced TAKS. As the Texas Education Agency distributes information to the district about this new assessment program, we will post on the website at www.cfisd.net. TEA may not finalize all information until the beginning of the spring semester, so we encourage you to revisit the website throughout the school year. Be assured, we will post information as soon as it is available to the district.

CY-WOODS KEY CLUB NEWSThis year, the Cy-Woods Key Club began the first Builders Club in the district at Spillane Middle School. Builders Club is essentially Key Club at the middle school level, providing kids with opportunities to perform service, build character and develop leadership. So far, the new club has met enormous success - the first meeting was attended by more than 40 students. The second meeting, which was held on October 4th, was the Spillane Builders Club’s first ice cream social. Nearly 60 students were in attendance at the social, in which officers from Cy-Woods Key Club served ice cream and gave a lesson on leadership. Also held at the social was the club’s first officer election. Each candidate gave a short speech detailing why they should be elected and votes were tallied while members were informed of upcoming events. The club has already participated in the Cy-Woods Key Club’s DVD drive, in which DVDs were collected and sent to troops in Afghanistan. Members will also be participating in a walk benefitting the American Heart Association, and have a Thanksgiving Food Drive coming up in the near future. Though it may be young, the Spillane Builders Club has promising potential and with the help of Cy-Woods Key Club, true leaders are being built in Northwest Houston. – Rachel Kitchens.

Cypress Woods High School held their annual homecoming parade on October 21, 2011. The theme was Egyptian and all floats had to incorporate the theme. Key Club dressed up and participated in the parade. The co-presidents, Andy Foulds and Emily Rholes, dressed up as King Tut and Cleopatra. Following them were mummies wrapped with toilet paper throwing candy to the local middle school kids, parents, administration and students. The Key Club worked hard on their float and tried to win one of the five possible awards given at the pep rally. Many different clubs and organizations were involved in the homecoming parade and pep rally. The Key Club officers showed their spirit with the Egyptian costumes, candy, Egyptian signs and cheers. The parade was a huge success and lots of people followed it to the pep rally at the football field. A Cypress resident and Miami Heat basketball player named Dexter Pittman talked at the pep rally and cheered the school on as well. – Madelin Cowden.

CY-WOODS WRAP NEWSWRAP 2012 planning is underway! WRAP is Cy-Woods High School’s parent-driven Project Prom organization. Jordan Merecka was born with multiple congenital heart defects, including Dextrocardia (his heart was on the wrong side of his chest). As a child, he experienced two open chest surgeries, several surgical revisions and an implantable defibrillator. For many years after his early surgeries, Jordan was able to live an active childhood. As a teen, he enjoyed hunting and fishing with his father and at school, he participated in FFA (Future Farmers of America). But, in September 2010, Jordan’s heart began to fail and he was placed on a waiting list for a heart transplant. With medical treatment, he was able to attend school as he waited. At the start of 2011, the senior at Cypress Woods High School was looking forward to three major milestones in his life: his prom on May 27th, his eighteenth birthday on May 29th and his graduation on June 5th. In April 2011, his health took a turn for the worse and he was admitted to Texas Children’s Hospital with heart failure symptoms and kidney insufficiency. He critically needed a heart transplant. Over the weekend of May 21st, all of his organs began to fail acutely and he could not breath on his own because his heart was so weak. On May 22nd, Jordan received the Total Artificial Heart that saved his life. Jordan missed his prom, but thanks to a diligent heart-failure team and the availability of the artificial heart, he celebrated his birthday at Texas Children’s on May 29th - a week after his surgery. On June 5th, Jordan watched his graduation ceremony online while his 16-year-old sister walked across the stage to accept his diploma on his behalf. His class rose to their feet for a standing ovation. Jordan has been accepted at Texas A&M University Galveston and looks forward to studying marine biology. But for now, Jordan’s focus is on gaining his strength and being ready for his new heart.

HOUSTON FIRE FIGHTERS MAKING HOUSTON THE CITY WITH THE

BIGGEST HEART FOR MDAIt’s official, Houstonians through the Houston Fire Fighters raised a record breaking $509,961 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association making them the #1 Fill-the-Boot department in the country for the last 9 out of 10 years raising more than $6.3 million during that time.

For more than 50 years fire fighters have helped MDA by filling their boots with donations from the citizens of their community. Houston Professional Fire Fighters Local #341 will begin their 2012 Fill-the-Boot fundraising campaign for the Muscular Dystrophy Association on Saturday February 11, 2012 during the hours of 10 AM and 2 PM. Fire Fighters will also be out March 10th, April 14th and May 12th to collect funds for the campaign.

The Fire Fighters rely on support and donations from the community for the success of the campaign. Proceeds raised during the street-side campaign will help support MDA services and research programs, including MDA’s outpatient clinics at Texas Children’s Hospital and The Methodist Neurological Institute. Money raised from Fill-the-Boot also sends young people ages 6-17 to MDA summer camp, held in Burton, Texas.
