Psychic to speak in Poultney

A shrewd farmer named Jack

Jack-O-Lantern is based on an old Irish folktale. One ver-sion of the folktale tells the story of Jack, a lazy but shrewd farmer. He is chased by the vil-lagers after stealing from them. Jack runs straight into the Devil who tells him his time is up! Jack attempts to trap both the Devil and the villagers. He finally makes a pact with the Devil so his soul will not go to hell.

However, Jack has too many sins to go to heaven. The Devil, upon leaving Jack, tosses him an ember so he can have light in the world. Jack carves out a turnip and places the ember inside. Jack makes the turnip his home and wanders the earth with the light from the ember seeking a place of rest. Thus, he becomes known as the Jack of

the Lantern or Jack-O-Lantern. The Wells Village Library

wishes each and every person a happy Halloween and please stop by the library for a folktale, ghost story, or scary book!

The Wells Village Library hours will fall back along with the time change the first week-end of November. On Nov. 5 the library will start the winter hours with Mondays from 4 to 6 p.m. The library hours will remain the same on Wednesdays from 3 to 5 p.m. and on Thursdays from 10 a.m. to noon.

Joanne Van Meter is the librarian at the Wells Public Library.

as the house was uncovered, revealing it lit up and decorated for fall. Charlotte Jordan then answered questions about the dollhouse while everyone enjoyed a slice of birthday cake.

Accompanying the gift is a notebook chronicling the work, from the purchase of the house shell as a kit in 1996, to every

detail of its progress to comple-tion: individually staining thou-sands of roof shingles, install-ing the tiny electrical wiring, and notes on where each piece of the detailed period furnish-ings were purchased.

In the journal Charlotte also notes that the Pawlet Library would be a meaningful home for the dollhouse because she attended school there for eight years when the building housed the Village Schoolhouse. The final entry in the journal is the

dedication of the dollhouse “To become a permanent donation to the Pawlet Library as a memori-al to the Herrick/Jordan fami-lies, who love their town.”

The Library Board wishes to express its gratitude to Charlotte and Bill Jordan for this lovely and heartfelt gift which will be enjoyed by generations of Pawlet residents to come.

The Mettawee Community School in West Pawlet is using an act of vandalism as a teachable moment.

An unknown driver heavily damaged the lawn at the school on Columbus Day weekend. Though officials don’t know the exact date of the vandalism, they believe it happened on Monday, Oct. 8.

Principal Brooke DeBonis said she arrived at work that Tuesday morning to find tire marks all over the grass and immediately began making phone calls.

“I talked to state troopers, I was looking into cameras and spotlights, I talked to the consta-ble and the Board of Education,” DeBonis said.

The school had a contractor come in to figure out the cost of installation of a security cam-era and the technology that accompanies it. DeBonis said she is still waiting for a quote and for Board of Education approval to move forward with further action.

In order to repair the lawn, the school custodian rolled it out and will soon add top soil and seeds. DeBonis said people in the area really care about what happened.

“Everyone here has so much respect for the community; it was overwhelming the response of students and parents who were concerned and wanted to help,” DeBonis said.

The school is using this inci-

dent to teach its students. The sixth-grade class, for example, submitted a letter to the editor of the FreePress. DeBonis said this allows older students to teach younger students how to reach out to the community.

DeBonis said the lawn is already looking much better than it did several weeks ago, but she wants to make sure something is done about it.

“We are taking action and making sure it doesn’t happen again,” DeBonis said.

The lawn in front of the Mettawee Community School is shown after it was torn up recently.

who share their sorrow and mourn the loss. A healthy way of saying good-bye. Cremations today are frequently accompanied by a service

A Vermont native, Serena Gallagher started working in the service industry at age 16. Even after graduating from Castleton State College with a bachelor’s degree in art, she continued to have dreams of owning her own wine bar. When a pub in Poultney came up for sale, she jumped at the chance. “My goal is to create a place for the community to enjoy and feel comfortable going to for great local food and great music at a price everyone can afford,” she says. “It’s rewarding to know that people are enjoying this place I have created.”Serena says that the best part of her job is meeting all the people who walk through the door of Taps Tavern. “I feel honored to have crossed the paths of so many,” she comments. TAPS Tavern is a warm, rustic and comfortable bar and restaurant which features 20+ beers and ciders. The menu offer everything from fresh homemade salads to burgers, paninis and some of their all time favorites such as Guiness Shepard’s Pie, Mac & Cheese, Grilled Rib-Eye, Fish & Chips and Babyback Ribs. They are open Tues-Thursday, 4pm to 1am and Friday – Sunday, noon to 1am. So come on in and meet Serena and her staff located at 158 Main Street, Poultney or call for future events and entertainment at 802-287-4064. Students want end to vandalismTo the editor:

Are you aware that vandalism has been committed right here in our close-knit community, specifi-cally at our beloved Mettawee Community School? Well, it has. Sometime during the Columbus Day weekend, the school’s front lawn was struck by vandalism, when a misled person drove his/her vehicle across the lawn, tear-ing it up. The damage done was more than physical and has called us to action.

First of all, we have pride in our school because it is a commu-nity-wide facility. Many well-val-ued community activities occur at our school, such as town meet-ing, clothing drives and meetings of the Haystack Hustlers to name just a few. We work under the phi-losophy that people come togeth-er here and random acts of van-

dalism do not fit that way of thinking.

Secondly, this vandalism costs money. It affects all the taxpayers of the town (including the culprit if he/she lives in town). Additionally, the money that may have to go into the possible pur-chase of a surveillance camera (over $1,000 according to princi-pal Brooke DeBonis) was ear-marked for educational purposes.

We feel bad for the taxpayers because this is not how they wanted their hard-earned money spent. Not only is it costing money, but it is also costing time: that of Mrs. DeBonis, Mrs. Ahlfeld and Superintendent French for researching the cost of cameras, Mr. Cleveland for rolling out and fixing the damaged lawn with his own equipment, and both the state and local police for increas-

ing patrols in the area. This time could be spent doing other aspects of their jobs.

Not only that, but someone could get hurt. The culprit could easily hit one of the trees or other obstacles on the lawn. Worse still, if the culprit sped out of the driveway after doing the damage, he/she could potentially hit a car with an innocent driver/family in it. We do not want this to happen to anyone.

So please, community, let’s rally together to stop this vandal-ism. It affects us all. If you have any suggestions or concerns regarding this issue, please call Mrs. DeBonis at 645-9009, and as always, you are invited to attend our school board meetings.

Green Mtn. College plans ‘ox roast’To the editor:

Green Mountain College plans to slaughter their two aging oxen soon and to utilize the meat on campus. This cer-tainly sounds like a good eco-nomic decision. It’s also a good agricultural decision and envi-ronmental one as well.

On the flip side, it seems to

be a very poor psychological decision.

With more than 40,000 adverse comments coming in from locally and around the world, one has to wonder if this really was the right choice after all.

Down the road, this event may cost GMC more economi-

cally than all of what the ham-burger is worth.

Probably GMC’s decision should have involved more than just economics. There is a 21st century element of human-ity that maybe should have been given more consideration.
