We had our final DE of the season at Mid-Ohio at the end of September and I was reminded of Porsche’s unique ability to make multiple variations of a single car that all are unique despite their common base chassis. At this year’s final Mid-Ohio event, I had a stu-dent with a 997, I drove Kent Winter’s 997 GT3, and I had a chance to drive Ed Baus’ 996 GT3 Cup car at Nelson Ledges.

The 997 C2S is simply a fantastic car. It was driven by an intermediate level student who was experienced enough to start to really push the car and test its limits. The 997 handled everything he threw at it with ease. As opposed to the old 911’s, the modern 911 is a very forgiving chassis. Add in Porsche’s stability management and you have a car that is perfect for the track. I was impressed how smooth and stable the car was, and how putting it into Sport mode transforms the car from a com-fortable daily driver to a car that is per-fectly at home on the racetrack.

After riding with my student for a cou-ple of sessions I took out Kent’s 997 GT3. Wow – what an unbelievable car. Take everything that I liked about the 997 C2S and make it better. Better han-dling, better brakes, more power, and an unbelievable sound. The extra 50 hp, revised suspension, bigger brakes, and closer ratio gearbox transforms the car. It makes the 997, which I was very impressed by, feel soft in compari-son. I can still hear the fabulous sound that the GT3 makes as it winds out to its 8,400 rpm redline. However, even though the GT3 is much more aggres-sively tuned in comparison to the 997 C2S, it still had a very predictable feel to it, and was easy to drive at the limit.

Which brings me to the GT3 Cup. What an absolutely amazing car. Ed came out on track right behind me while I was driving Kent’s GT3 and followed me for several laps. We were hustling around the club course at Mid-Ohio, turning

pretty respectable lap times of around 1:38. However, once Ed got bored, he passed me and just walked away from me, running about 4 seconds a lap fast-er than me. The GT3 Cup shows what is possible when Porsche Motorsports takes a 911 and turns it into a car tuned purely for the racetrack.

I had a chance to drive Ed’s car at Nel-son Ledges earlier this year and was blown away by it. I have driven a va-riety of racecars over the years and nothing compares to it. The handling was incredibly sharp, even when com-pared to other racecars. It seemed like I would just think about turning in and the car was already headed towards the apex. And while the GT3 felt pre-dictable and easy to drive at the limits, the Cup car felt like it was on a razor’s edge. This razor‘s edge handling along with the close ratio 6 speed (for those who have driven Nelson’s - I was in 5th gear before the bridge) meant that I couldn’t relax even for a minute. And then there was the sound. The sound that is produced by the motorsports tuned flat 6 through an open exhaust is something that makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck. Driving a GT3 Cup is truly sensory overload.

Now I just need to win the lottery so that I can afford to buy one of each. The C2S for a daily driver, the GT3 for a DE and weekend car, and the Cup car for racing!

Charity Corner

Thanks to all who participated in the Marshall Goldman BBQ and Wine Tasting in September, we had a great turnout and a great response to our raffle to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation®. Because the holidays are coming – whether we’re ready for them or not – the Make-A-Wish Foundation® will again be the beneficiary of our charitable efforts in December. We think you’ll agree that the holidays are the perfect time to help to make a child’s wish come true. And the Cleveland Botanical Gardens with their festive decorations are the perfect place to celebrate the holidays! We’ll see you there on Saturday, December 15th when we’ll have some great raffle prizes thanks to corporate donations and generous Club members.

The coming holidays also mean the coming of winter; and, as we all know, winter in Cleveland can sometimes be a challenge. We can’t make the weather warmer, but we can help to provide a warm meal to Cleveland area residents who are struggling to make ends meet. Our past dona-tions to the Cleveland Food Bank were gratefully accepted; and while the Make-A-Wish Founda-tion® is our major charity for the year, we’d like to encourage members to bring boxes of pasta or cans of soup to the Annual Meeting & Social on Saturday, November 17th at Stoddard NLA-LCC in Highland Heights. There’s no elections this year, but it’s a great opportunity to get together with other Club members, enjoy beverages provided by Stoddard, a main course courtesy of the Club and appetizers, sides dishes and desserts contributed by Club members. We’ll sample all the “goodies” at the party knowing that donations of pastas an soups will help less fortunate folks to enjoy a hot meal on a cold winter night.

See you on November 17th at Stoddard – and don’t forget the Holiday Party on December 15th. And if you have a prize you’d like to donate for the raffle at the Holiday Party, please contact Karen at [email protected] or June at [email protected]. We can always use more raffle prizes. The more the merrier – and, after all, ‘tis the season…

As the leaves start to turn, we all know that it is that time of the year to get the car ready for winter. But before we do, we offer our Driver’s Education (DE) school at Mid-Ohio for one last chance to drive the car before spring returns. The week-end could not have been better, sunny and 60 degrees all three days! Friday was a full house of lap-ping day participants, and for the first time we had two groups for the Friday session. What a great turn-out there was!

We tried a few new things this year in the classroom with some great guest lecturers: Frank Todaro, Dave Pierson, and Lou Brancae, as well as our fearless leader Jim Cannatti and his tactics to get the students in the seats and more interested in the classroom session. Seriously, who wants to sit in a classroom when there are cars on track, and we could be watching or driving?

The students gave us a few ideas of what they wanted to talk about for next year, so thanks for the feedback and keep it coming. And thanks, Jim and guys for sharing your knowledge. Keeping the stu-dents interested is definitely key!

Taste of the Track is a program started by PCA with the sole pur-

pose of introducing a driving en-thusiast to high performance driv-ing, PCA style. Some drivers would like to learn more about the PCA Driver’s Education school, but are not quite ready to be a full-time DE student. We had an outstanding turn-out for this program. Maybe you are just thinking about it; why not try it to see if you like it before you jump into the deep end? This program will be offered at all of our DE schools.

As you know, the DE schools are not just about driving, they are a social event as well. The registration af-ter-party is a must, if you can wait that long. Many of you waited for Registration and Tech to do their thing so that you were checked in and safe on the track for follow-ing day. The after-track party on Saturday night had beverages and tales of the day with our comrades on the track. It was a time to wind down and talk about our experi-ences of the day. The DE is where we can meet new friends and reac-quaint ourselves with old (I mean, classic) friends, too. One of our dear racing pals , Bob Lassier, stopped by to say hi and to show off his Car-rera GT. He, or should I say, his car was a great photo opportunity for many of our students. Another per-son from the past, Jack Oliver, now

has time to get out and drive, and he had such a great time getting reinvolved. We are glad to have you back, Jack! We also met Logan, one of our younger members, for dinner on Saturday night. Logan came out to see the racecar drivers and to cel-ebrate her mom’s (Angie’s) birthday at the Roadhouse restaurant.

Sunday morning arrived, and with it, the eagerness to drive. Before we began, though, Brad Kennett made an announcement. He wanted to give away a half-price school. All of our students were eligible, but only one could win. The winner was drawn by Noah Wheeler, and it was B30. Congratulations, Diane Russell; we know we will see you next year!

Before I wrap this up, I just want to give a shout-out to B10, Angelo Ga-gliani. I know for sure that you had a great time because every time you came into the paddock you were yelling, “WOO HOO!” Now that was the best feedback ever! All in all, it was a great weekend. Winter is heading down the front straight, but spring is right around the first turn!

Dear NORPCA: Mid Ohio school could not have run as well as it did without the work of many volunteers. So, on that note, we would like to thank the following people for their help in making the event run as smoothly as it did: Lori and Bob Bryant (Competition Director and Chief Instructor), Jim Cannatti (Classroom Instructor), Frank Todaro (classroom speaker), Dave Pierson (classroom speaker), Lou Brancae (classroom speaker), Missy Davis (volunteer worker/instructor), Kel-len Miller (Porsche Master Technician), Mike Garriga (Chief of Tech), Skip Wolfe (President NORPCA), Jan Montgom-ery (registration), Brian Peterson (t-shirt supplier/instructor), Porsche of Beachwood & Brad Kennett, Jason Grimm (Porsche Beachwood General Manager), Jed Hunter (Penske Cleveland Area Vice President). Tan Nguyen (Porsche Tech), and Christian Cirillo (Porsche Tech). We would also like to thank the following for taking photos of our event: Jen Brancae, Kris Tatter, Jack Oliver, and Dan Manizer.

On another note just in case you would like to do one more school before the end of the year please check out the Audi Club Daytona International Speedway Driving School Friday, December 7, to Sunday, Dec 9, 2012. Questions? Contact Dave Pierson at [email protected] or (216)391-7042 or Craig Liechty at [email protected]. (Editor’s note: See conclusion of article in this issue or in Email blast)

Again thanks to everyone who came out and enjoyed the weekend. Ed and I had a great time with all of you and hope you have a great rest of the year!

On the evening of Septem-ber 15, 2012, over 120 new and long-time members gathered at Marshall Goldman Motors for the annual BBQ & Wine tast-ing. Both BBQ cooked by Bill Polechak and numerous sides provided by our members sated appetites while Bill also served as our wine guide pouring from a dozen selections.

Jim & Diane Forcina, Social Chairs, were ready for the pre-registered throngs with a wine glass at the ready for each mem-ber.

With Make-a-Wish as the char-ity for the evening, blue stars could be seen everywhere as Charity Chairs, June Roesch and Karen Latsko were busy handing them out with each raffle ticket

purchase. Karen’s Porsche Cay-enne was the backdrop for the parking lot display of Stars while

June with the help of Make-a-Wish volunteer, Nancy Ranier manned the indoor table re-plete with raffle prizes to be an-nounced later in the evening.. A great time was had by all.

(Editor note: This story is continued from the October, 2012 issue of “Voices from the Trunk”.) ....I was working for Fred at Motorcars Porsche Audi at the time. I worked on customer cars, along with the racecars that Fred drove. As a result, I was invited to crew on the team for the 24 hours of Daytona. “Wow”, is all I remember thinking upon getting the invitation! At that point in time, my memories of Daytona revolved around the 1980 Daytona 500. This race was the first year that live cameras were placed in a couple of cars during the race. The cameras were controlled live via the production team. Just curious, anyone remember the cam-era in Bill Elliot’s car? What a spectacular view to experience, 195 MPH down the back straight at Daytona! Of course there are all the “blimp”, pit lane, and tower cameras, but the in-car vid-eo with Bill Elliot sold me! I still remember that footage, and realizing just how long the back straight is at Daytona. It is 3000 feet long, and then you drive into a 31 de-gree banked corner. Actually, I think I recall turn 3 looking like a wall, and “Awesome Bill from Dawsonville” not even slowing down going into the corner! Amazing!! From that moment on, I knew I wanted to see Daytona firsthand. Conse-quently, when the opportunity presented itself some years later, I jumped into it with both feet!! The facilities at Daytona are stunning to see for the first time. The overall size is overwhelm-ing. When you first see the track, it is probably a little over a mile drive until you come to the entrance. The entrance is different from any other track because it is a tunnel. You drive through a tube slightly larger than your car, down a very steep angle to a short flat section under the track, and finally up another steep slope into the infield, exiting by turn 4. When you turn around once you’re on the infield, you are looking at a 3.5 story tall WALL. Seriously, I mean a wall so steep that it defies logic that a car can stay up there! Thirty-one (31) degrees, that’s steep! For a physical reference, download an application with a degree indicator onto your smartphone, and move your phone to 31 degrees. That’s STEEP! After several trips to Daytona crewing for race teams and working the race, I set a goal for myself to drive Daytona one day. That goal re-mained in my head, just floating around, wait-ing for the perfect opportunity to let it blossom and grow. As my track driving started to look a little bit repetitive, Daytona crept back into my thoughts. Nothing wrong with Mid-Ohio mind

you, though remember I started this hobby when I was 17 years old. I have 32 years of expe-rience driving the majority of the larger tracks available in this region of the country. I indeed love VIR and Watkins Glen, and have even made it as far west as Second Creek. After a few years, however, you start looking for other tracks to drive. At such times, Daytona would creep back into my thoughts, but I could never find a drivers’ school there to attend. No matter how hard I tried, unless you were in a race car, and wanted to run in IMSA, SCCA, or the Be-Petty experience; there were really no options to drive at Daytona. So therein lies the problem, how do you drive somewhere where they don’t offer a school? Well, you create a school of your own, that’s how! Knowing the history behind the “Why” of the Daytona Drivers School, it’s time to move on to the “How” aspects. HOW do you get a week-end at Daytona?? Well, that is bit of work. In fact, it was really the hardest part of the project. Securing a date on their calendar, or I should say, getting a date that would work for us, was indeed a challenge. I didn’t really want a sum-mer event, because everyone is busy doing the standard tracks in the area, i.e., MO, NL, WG, VIR, Grattan, RA, or who knows, maybe even Second Creek if it still exists. As a result, the date had to be either at the beginning of the season or towards the end. The beginning of the race season really starts with the 24 hours of Daytona, and then Speed Weeks leading up to the Daytona 500. I was pretty certain that I was not going to have any success with the beginning of the season, so I figured the end of the season was the safest bet. My goal became to get a date at Daytona at the end of the race season. Preferably before Christmas, maybe just prior to Thanksgiving, or if I was super fortunate, a date between those two holidays. Given the nature of accomplishing the “How” of things, interjecting a related little tale about Daytona and Gandhi seems timely and appro-priate. I believe it was Gandhi who told a story about the negotiation technique he used to deal with his government, and the phases he went through with them to get things done. In the first stage, when he would ask for some-thing the powers that be would ignore him, and then laugh at him. After the laughing came the denial; meaning them telling him that what he wanted to do couldn’t be done, not possible. In the final phase, he gets what he wants.

With that story in mind, know that I had a similar situation with Daytona. I would call, send emails, even some letters, though I never heard back. Nothing. Zip, zero, nada zip-ola. My guess was they were just hoping I would give up, go away and leave them alone. Remember, however, that I had a goal, and because I have an obsessively goal-oriented and results-driven personality; their lack of response was not going to deter me. Fortuitously, I met one of Daytona’s marketing per-sonnel at the PRI show. We had a great conversa-tion. I established credibility, and now had a per-son to engage in dialogue about the project. At this point, we transitioned into the second Gandhi phase; basically the laughing, and the “oh you can-not do that, nobody rents Daytona” rhetoric. This phase lasted until I presented the safety re-cords for our previous events, and the fact that we never had a claim at a single one of our schools over the course of the past 12 years. Providing this information, along with reference letters from other tracks associated with our events, led us into the denial phase. At this point, all I heard was that we could not hold a drivers’ school like we wanted to at Daytona be-cause the cars couldn’t handle it, and the drivers would not be able to cope with the banking. Fur-thermore, the event would not be safe. Cars would break. It would be too expensive, so you’ll never get people to sign up. Deny. Deny. Deny. Which leads us to the final phase, getting what I wanted ..... a date at Daytona! Once on the calen-dar, the real fun began. If not for the assistance and support of key individuals, namely Craig Liechty, Chris Smith, and Rhen Avner; this drivers school would not be possible. These gentlemen are in-tegral to making things happen without a hitch. Special thanks to three important team members and assets at Daytona! After handling the nuts and bolts necessary to running any drivers’ education event, i. e., public-ity, insurance, track time and activity schedule, as well as car transportation to and from the track; it was time to recruit the myriad volunteers, spon-sors, instructors, and students needed to have a successful and profitable weekend. Enough can’t be said about the important roles great volunteers and instructors play in the success of such an am-bitious undertaking! Thank you so very much to everyone who contributed their time and talents to help out!! Sincerest thanks to Beachwood Porsche and Fred Baker Porsche Audi! Your sponsorship efforts in-deed were important and meaningful to us. Kudos to the fantastic staff at Daytona as well!! They really

helped make the weekend a success, too! WOW, the first drivers school at Daytona, what an experience!! I really cannot do it justice describing it. I have posted a couple of videos on YouTube for your viewing pleasure. Even so, it is really hard to comprehend the steepness of the banking. Thir-ty-one (31) degrees sounds pretty steep, though when you are on it, it seems like a vertical wall. All you can think about is how the car is ever going to stay up there? Pictures and video always seem to make the banking appear flatter than the actual experience. Standing at the bottom of the track, it indeed looks like a wall. Driving on such banking is hard to describe. When you look out of the passenger side window, you are viewing the sky. As you gaze out the driver’s window, you are looking at the asphalt apron. The rear view mirror is of limited value on the banking, because you are really driving in a bowl. The view in the rear view mirror is of a stream of flowing asphalt. On the back straight and the infield, us-ing your rear view mirror works fine, however, my preference is to have the passenger mirror aimed over the roof. Doing this, you have a reference looking back into the bowl. I leave the driver’s side and rearview mirrors in their standard positions, and use them as you would normally. I know now why spotters are so valuable at Daytona. Don’t get me wrong, passing and seeing other cars is still no problem. Though doing so is slightly different on this track, compared to any other track I have driven. Some additional factoids about the track, from the exit of turn 6 onto the banking to the bus stop, is 3/4 of a mile, all full throttle mind you. Next, from the exit of the bus stop to the entrance to the in-field is 7/8’s of a mile, again, all at full throttle. All on the banking, with centrifugal force pushing you down into the seat, not sideways, it’s a surreal experience to be sure. You can’t truly believe or comprehend how amazing it is without driving it yourself! To conclude, participating in a Drivers School at Daytona is a unique and thrilling experience. At-tending one is most certainly a “bucket list” item for the true track enthusiast. So...we’re doing it again!! Set aside the beginning of December, and treat yourself to a once in a lifetime driving thrill! Hope to see everyone on the track at Daytona, and thanks for letting me share my adventure with you!

Where has this year gone...tech sessions are discussing how to put your cars away for the win-ter and my back yard is covered in fallen leaves. With the pur-chase of a 1987 El Camino (yes, another club to join) we had to pursue larger garage needs for our growing corral of cars and it won’t be too soon before our Cavalier is our daily driver!

But before we worry about the gales of November, let’s remem-ber the great events that our Porsche club just completed. Marshall Goldman Motors was a superb host at this year’s BBQ Winetasting (see pictures of this event on pages 13-16) and the September Drivers’ Ed at Mid-OH was another premier event for NOR (the Baus’ cover this on pages 9-12). Autocross had it’s final event of the season (pics on page 21) and will be ready to plan a full schedule for 2013 starting with another AX school for we newbies or those that want some refresher one-on-one instruction.

We will do our best to attend the last Cars & Coffee of this year on October 20th and hope that, once again, Porsche members are out in force. The Tech Session at Air-Cooled in October and the one at Steinel’s in November are already on our calendar and Bob should be in attendance even if

I’m not able to be there. So there is plenty to see and do in the car arena this fall. You can also see your Porsche friends at the An-nual Meeting & dinner on No-vember 17th at Stoddard NNA LLC. Please be sure to RSVP to each of these events (see con-tact info on the calendar pages)..

Speaking of RSVP’s.....as of Oc-tober 15th there were already 14 couples signed up for NOR’s Holiday party at the Botanical Gardens on December 15th!! Enthusiasm is building. You can mail in your payment with the enclosed flyer or sign up on line at http:// norpcaholiday2012.eventbrite.com. Don’t be shut out. This will be a fabulous event and there will be no walk-ups admitted.

One last thing.....if you have pic-tures from NOR events, I would love to have copies for an up-coming slide show. Call me for a mailing address.
