aBout lakeland A Message from the President…Welcome to Lakeland Community College, the first college in Ohio founded by a vote of the people. As a college, we take great pride in providing students with the education and training needed to earn a degree, start a career, upgrade job skills or complete the first two years of college education. In addition, it is essential for the college to provide students with opportunities to enhance their college experiences through participation in athletics or on-campus student organizations.

When it comes to athletics, Lakeland has an outstanding history of its teams and players performing at the highest level. Our coaches are top-notch and our student-athletes always strive for excellence on the field, on the court, and especially in the classroom.

Whether you are a participant or a spectator, thank you for supporting Lakeland’s intercollegiate athletic programs. Sit back and enjoy another exciting, fast-paced season!

Morris W. Beverage Jr., E.D.M. President

Scott M. Barlow, Athletic Director and Athletic Facility Manager

“Academic success for every student-athlete is the ultimate goal of the athletic department at Lakeland Community College,” says athletic director Scott Barlow. “We believe that success in athletics can support success in the classroom and, ultimately, a successful life.”

“At Lakeland, our athletic programs are designed to enhance an athlete’s academic experience by helping our students develop the critical life skills of time management, self-discipline, the ability to work within a team environment, and recognition of the need for personal improvement.”

“We are proud of the fact that we led the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference in academic award winners in 2008-09. We also had two NJCAA Academic All-Americans and an NJCAA Distinguished Academic All-American.”

Barlow was named Lakeland’s athletic director during the summer of 2000. He brought with him an extensive educational and practical background in teaching, coaching, and administration.

Barlow currently serves as the commissioner of the OCCAC and is the NJCAA Region XII women’s division director. He is also regional representative for the NJCAA Division II volleyball and women’s basketball poll and a member of several NJCAA standing committees including softball, swimming, and diving. He is the national chair of the NJCAA’s DII women’s basketball committee. Barlow was named OCCAC Athletic Director of the Year in 2002 and was selected as Co-Athletic Director of the Year in 2005.

He received a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education from the State University of New York College at Cortland, where he was a four year varsity baseball player. He has two master’s degrees; one in physical education and health from Radford University and another in administrative supervision from the State University of New York – Plattsburgh. Barlow currently resides in Painesville Township with his wife, Jennifer, and three school age children who are active in a variety of sports.

heAD COACh terry BOweTerry Bowe enters his 13th season associated with the Lakeland men’s basketball program and 10th as the head coach. Since his arrival, Lakeland has achieved unprecedented success, winning the program’s first two District Championships in 2011 and 2012. Individual and team success have come hand-in-hand under Bowe, as Lakeland is one of just two schools in the nation (NJCAA Division II) to boast First Team All-Americans in 2011 and 2012 (Ray Chambers and Brendan Cooper, respectively).

Bowe’s tenure with the Lakers began in 1999 as an assistant under Willis Brown. The Cleveland native took the reins as head coach in 2004 and led the Lakers to a 29-32 record through his first two years. The Lakers would go 38-10 from 2005-07 but remained at or near the .500 mark from 2007-09. The 2009-10 season saw the Lakers make the jump by posting a 19-12 record and finishing second in the Ohio

Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC). Bowe was named OCCAC Coach of the Year following the season.

The 2010-11 season was a historical one, as Bowe and the Lakers went 24-12 en route to the first District Championship in program history. Lakeland advanced to the NJCAA Division II National Tournament where it finished eighth in the country.

Last year, Lakeland repeated as District Champions and once again advanced to the National Tournament. The Lakers won their first two games to advance to the Final Four before falling to eventual national champion Mott CC in the national semifinals. Lakeland finished the year with a 27-9 overall record, good for the most wins since the 1991-92 season.

Bowe leads the OCCAC in wins among active coaches and currently ranks second in school history with 166 victories. His playing career began at nearby Benedictine High School where he led the Bengals to a pair of regional and district finals. He went on to play four years at NCAA Division III Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio.

Bowe holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Communications and Human Resources from Baldwin-Wallace. He also earned a Master’s Degree in Applied Communications and Methodology from Cleveland State University and a Master’s Degree in Human Resources Management from Capella University.

He and his wife, Monica, live in Macedonia with their young daughter Kaia and the blessed memory of their son, TJ.

eCOrDsassistant coaches

The 2012-13 season marks Ornette Gardenhire’s fifth as an assistant coach with the Lakeland men’s basketball program. Since his arrival, the Lakers have increased their win total each season and have won a pair of Region 12, District 11 championships for the first time in school history.

In Gardenhire’s third season, Lakeland earned the program’s first district title and NJCAA Division II National Tournament appearance, ultimately finishing eighth. Last year, Gardenhire helped the Lakers repeat as district champions and advance to the Final Four before falling to eventual national champion Mott CC in the national semifinals.

No stranger to NJCAA men’s basketball or the national tournament, Gardenhire was an assistant at nearby

Chris Ulrich joined the Lakeland coaching staff prior to the start of the 1998-99 campaign. Coach Ulrich is responsible for formulating scouting reports, breaking down game film, coordinating travel arrangements and working with the post players.

Ulrich is a 1992 graduate of Baldwin-Wallace College with a Bachelor’s Degree in business administration. He was a four year letter winner for the Yellow Jackets, and served as team captain his senior season. Ulrich was raised in Erie, Pennsylvania and is a graduate of Strong Vincent High School. He is currently a Customer Service Manager for Stahls' Transfer Express.

Coach Ulrich resides in Mentor with his wife Dawn.

Cuyahoga Community College in 2003-04 when the Challengers won a national championship. He helped Cuyahoga repeat as district champions one year later and advance to the NJCAA Final Four. Gardenhire assumed head coaching responsibilities for the 2007-08 season, guiding his team to a 21-9 overall record and 12-4 mark in OCCAC competition. The following season he transitioned to Lakeland to work alongside head coach Terry Bowe.

Gardenhire was a four year college starter, playing two years at Lackawanna Junior College in Scranton, Pa. before playing his final two seasons at Bloomfield College in Bloomfield, N.J. He and his wife, Debra, have five children.

Osborne Gardner enters his first season as an assistant coach with the men’s basketball program and brings with him a wealth of collegiate and professional playing experience. Gardner is no stranger to Lakeland, having played two years as a part of Terry Bowe’s first recruiting class from 2003-05.

Gardner led the Lakers in scoring (16.6 ppg), rebounding (7.9 rpg), and field goal percentage (58.6) as a freshman forward. As a sophomore, his output in all three statistical categories increased. Gardner ranked second in the OCCAC and seventh regionally in scoring (19 ppg) and rebounding (9.2 rpg) while shooting 63% from the floor.

His playing career continued at California University of Pennsylvania (NCAA Div. II) where he played in 58 games and helped the Vulcans go 41-18 during his two years. As a senior, Gardner earned First Team All-Conference

honors after helping the Vulcans (24-7) secure an NCAA Tournament berth and PSAC West title.

Gardner earned a tryout with the Minnesota Timberwolves of the NBA following after college before ultimately joining the Air Force Reserves. His playing career continued with USA Basketball, where he traveled nationally and abroad from 2009-11. At Lakeland, Gardner will work primarily with the post players.

Earl Ingram III enters his first season as a volunteer assistant coach with the Lakeland men’s basketball program, bringing along collegiate and professional playing experience. Ingram played one season at Columbus State, a fellow Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) and NJCAA Division II member school, before moving on to NCAA-Division III Adrian College in Adrian, Michigan.

In his lone season with Columbus State, Ingram helped the Cougars to a district final (2003) while leading the team in field goal percentage. He was a two-year letterman at Adrian College, playing on a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAA) runner-up team in 2004.

Ingram earned professional tryouts with the Ohio Aviators and Indiana Alleycats of the American Basketball Association (ABA) in 2005, the Albequerque Thunderbirds of the NBA D-League in 2005, and abroad in Bayreuth, Germany in 2006. He played two seasons with the Cuyahoga Falls Cuogars/Akron Energy of the IBL from 2006 to 2007. The Lima, Ohio native earned an Associate degree from Columbus State and graduated from Adrian with a Bachelor’s degree. Ingram will work primarily with the post players at Lakeland. He currently is employed with the Boys & Girls Club of Cleveland.

season outlookThe 2012-13 Lakeland Community College men’s basketball team returns a number of key contributors from last year’s historical Final Four run including four starters, meaning expectations will once again be sky high as the Lakers seek an unprecedented third straight District Championship and NJCAA National Tournament berth. Last year’s team finished 27-9, the third most wins in a single season in program history dating back to 1968. In order to return to the national stage, Lakeland must first replace the loss of First Team All-American Brendan Cooper. The do-it-all forward was instrumental in the Lakers’ success on both ends of the floor and will be a focal point at NCAA Division II Fairmont State as a junior. Cooper’s loss is offset by the return of seven players from last year’s squad – a rarity in two-year college basketball. The most veteran lineup in the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) will face a difficult schedule ripe with nationally-ranked opponents both inside and outside league play. Unlike last season, when Lakeland opened the year as relative underdogs and quickly rose to a No. 3 national ranking, this year’s team will face immediate pressure after being ranked preseason No. 5 by the NJCAA.

Sophomore captains Isiah Boddie and Deran Banton will be relied upon to provide leadership on and off the court. Boddie will see an increased roll at the point guard position while the versatile Banton’s responsibilities will range from the shooting guard to the power forward spot.

Returning guards Martell Medley, Daishon Robinson, and Marius Paulauskas provide added depth on the perimeter. Medley emerged late in the season as a viable scoring option after reaching double figures in three of four games at the national tournament while Robinson and Paulauskas will stretch the defense with their shooting ability.

The front line returns second year starters Chaz Rollins and Richard Smith who, at 6-6 and 6-7, respectively, provide a presence on both ends. Rollins was a second team all-conference honoree as a freshman who led the Lakers in scoring and rebounding. Smith, meanwhile, led the team in blocked shots as a freshman and started in all 36 games.

The Lakers also welcome five newcomers to the team as part of the 2012 recruiting class. Second year player Charles Oliver comes from NCAA Division I Rider University where he saw action in 13 games as a freshman. The sharp-shooting guard will play heavy minutes from the start and will be a key contributor on the offensive end. Classmate Chris Jefferies comes to Kirtland after a year at NCAA Division III Heidelberg University where he played in 19 games as a freshman forward.

Incoming freshmen include guards Malik Billingsley and Marcus Fleming along with forward Michael Turman. Fleming, a traditional point guard, will compete for a starting role while Billingsley will work alongside him as a shooting guard. Like Jefferies, Turman will give Lakeland the depth at the forward position it utilized so well last season.
