Brian Monihan has published the Lake Oswego Review every week for more than 10 years. Controversies have come

and gone, but there has been one constant: the community’s ongoing commitment to its education system and the high value it places on the students of Lake Oswego.

“There’s no doubt that strong schools are inextricably tied to a strong community,” Monihan says.

Monihan grew up in Beaverton and graduated from Jesuit. He went on to Oregon State, where he majored in business and journalism. He has worked for the Pamplin Media Group for 25 years, where he is now vice president. He was named publisher of the Lake Oswego Review in 2001 and also publishes the West Linn Tidings, the Southwest (Portland) Community Connection and The (Sellwood) Bee.

Prior to coming to the Review, Monihan published the Forest Grove News-Times for several years. Upon his arrival in Lake Oswego, Monihan was immediately struck by the caliber of the students.

Youth Involvement“All the kids here are so motivated. They get involved and really put themselves out there,” he says. “It’s a community with a lot of type-A personalities, from the kids to the parents. Everyone really values education highly.”

Monihan was also not at a loss for using this newfound motivated talent. The Review added student columnists from both high schools as a way to give perspective on their community and also established a youth board as another way to bring younger voices into the newspaper. Even though the youth board is temporarily suspended for this year, Monihan hopes to bring the program back next year.

With education so cherished in the community, Monihan asks the news team to include students in as much of the paper as they can.

“It’s important to the community, so it’s important to us. I want to get as many kids’ names, faces, and achievements into the paper as possible. Their activities, band, orchestra, sports, drama—all that is so important to our community,” he says.

Also popular in the Review are summaries of weekend sports events, especially youth football, where if you don’t see your own child’s incredible touchdown catch, you’re sure to see your neighbors’. The paper also lists a boy and girl athlete of the week from both Lake Oswego and Lakeridge High Schools. And in the past year, Monihan says, they have added something else.

“Sports is obviously a huge draw around here, but so are academics. So we started Student All-Stars, to highlight the amazing kids who are leaders in their schools and in this community,” he adds.

Community ValuesIt’s clear to Monihan that the community truly values its students and is proud of the District’s status of continued excellent ratings for all its schools.

He points to the response by the Lake Oswego community to the school funding crisis last year as an example of the commitment to excellence. When it became clear that state funding cuts to school districts across the state might very well lead to teacher layoffs, staff reductions, and program cuts in Lake Oswego, the community acted at all levels.

“You had business leaders—the Bank of Oswego for example—city leaders, parents, everyone. The community rallied around the Foundation. It was a tremendous year of giving.”

Monihan says he’s seen many polarizing issues over the years in Lake Oswego, but the Foundation’s efforts were not among them.

“You could say that the Foundation has really united the

A Message from Kevin Robertson, LOSD Foundation President 2011-12

Lake Oswego is truly a community like no other, and our strong schools are at its heart. Families and businesses continue to move here because of our schools and then fall in love with this special place.

Last year, the Lake Oswego School District Foundation celebrated 25 years of its singular mission of investing in teachers to keep our community strong. With the support of our donors, consisting of parents, alumni, grandparents, businesses, homeowners, and other community members, we raised $2.2 million to help

bridge what looked like an overwhelming gap in state funding that might have severely affected our schools for this year. The city, our school district staff, and teachers also contributed to the effort for our schools making what was truly a communitywide statement about how committed we are to excellent schools.

The generous spirit did not stop there: our forward-thinking contributors also gave more than $1.2 million to our endowment. The growth of our endowment is the key to our success for the next 25 years, and we are starting to see its impact already. This year, the endowment will be one of the largest single contributors to the annual campaign. With your continued support and donations to the Endowment, that yearly contribution will only increase.

We all know that challenges remain with the current state of the economy, and that difficult decisions may still be needed. However it is important to keep in mind that despite these challenges and because of your support, our class sizes are among the lowest while the number of instructional days are among the highest in the region. Our students and our schools have never been more successful: every school has now received the highest possible rating for five years running.

As we embark upon another leg of our journey, we must strive to maintain the same broad participation to achieve our goals: $2.3 million for the annual campaign, and $1.6 million for the endowment. Accomplishing these goals will allow our schools to remain strong, providing an unparalleled education experience to our students and standing as a symbol of our commitment to keep our schools as the heart of our community.

community, but that’s just a reflection of the community itself. Lake Oswego values its students. The community recognizes the importance of strong public schools. And one thing about Lake Oswegans: they’re going to act if no one else will. They will do it themselves,” he says.

Monihan, who lives in West Linn (he and his wife Traci have raised 5 children and currently are hosting an exchange student from Sweden), says that while West Linn and Lake Oswego are similar demographically, there are significant differences between the two communities.

“Lake Oswego is really a small town and people are proud to be from here and be a part of it and contribute,” says Monihan.

Good Infrastructure Leads to InvolvementIn times of financial crisis, Monihan points out that the existence of a well-established foundation is a huge benefit to Lake Oswego.

“With a strong infrastructure in place, as it is in Lake Oswego, not only is fundraising easier, but people are drawn to get involved.”

Getting involved is something that Monihan’s Review has not shied away from.

“I think the job of a community paper is not only to inform and to educate, but also to inspire and get people involved,” he says.

The paper helped the Foundation in a number of ways during last year’s campaign. The Review, partnering with Bank of Oswego and Fish Marketing, donated over $20,000 in advertising to support the campaign. When the Foundation produced a video describing the need to bridge the gap in funding, the Review helped the video go viral by featuring it on the paper’s website for the rest of the year.

“We’re here to serve the community. The more subscriptions and advertising we sell, the more pages we can print to better serve Lake Oswego. We already generate too many stories each week that can’t run because we don’t have enough advertising,” he says.

“It’s not about making a profit. It’s about making a better newspaper and serving our community.”

As the 25th Anniversary of the Lake Oswego School District Foundation comes to a close, we look back on what we set out to do and we are proud and thankful for what the Lake Oswego community has enabled us to accomplish.

For the annual campaign, we raised more than $2.2 million—the most ever. Coupled with the addition of the City of Lake Oswego’s contribution of $2 million, the District was able to survive the ongoing statewide budget crisis in 2011 and once again earned the highest rating of “Excellent” for each school within the district—for the fifth year in a row! Excellence has a price and the Lake Oswego community has once again proven that it invests in our schools in order to get it—thank you!

For our endowment fund, the Stafford Society, we established a goal of $1 million in contributions and intensified our focus on this fund in order to complement the annual campaign with a long-term stable source of funding. Aided with two match grants of $500,000 to kick-start the effort, we are pleased to report a successful raise in total of over $1.4 million in commitments. Since our endowment is projected to return 4 to 5% of its growth to the annual campaign each year, the endowment will likely be the largest single contributor to the campaign in 2012 at over $22,000—and here’s the best part: it will only continue to grow and it will do that FOREVER!

Looking forward, we’ve set our sights to raise an additional $1.6 million in commitments to the endowment in 2012. We are encouraged by the feedback of spirited donors within the community who value that their contribution is safe and secure as managed by the Oregon Community Foundation, which manages the nation’s sixth largest pool of endowment assets. Endowment donors also understand that their investment earns a return of excellence in all of our schools from kindergarten through 12th grade, and that their giving is a means to pay back their fondness of living while learning in Lake Oswego and leaves a legacy to the entire community.

While it is important for you to understand what the Foundation does (we invest in teachers!) and how we do it (through capital contributions to both

the annual campaign and the endowment), we believe it is most important for you to understand why we are doing it: we are

building a brighter future for Lake Oswego today and tomorrow through excellence in our schools. The simple truth is that a strong school system is the backbone of the community. It is the top reason why new residents move here and existing citizens stay here, why real estate values maintain a premium value, why our local businesses do better than in other communities, and why Lake Oswego “feels” different—like a caring community. They say it takes a village; thank you for being a part of our dream and contributing to our success.
