Correct Guidances on Dharma Practice Smoking Will Lead to Downfalls

As mentioned in the Mountain Retreat by H.H.Dudjom Rinpoche: All kinds of smokingare said to be thetricks of oath-breaking demons, so reject them from theheart. Wine should be taken as an element of samaya(vows), but not drunk without control, to the point of

intoxication. Hence, smoking and alcoholism are twovery bad habits that all Dharma practitioners should avoid.

At one time, His Holiness Chadral Rinpoche hadmentioned the following words: The major defect ofsmoking is that it will close the aperture of brahma at thetop of ones head. So, at the moment of death, it will beextremely difcult for ones practice of Phowa, in tryingto get ones own consciousnessout from there, either toliberate oneself from the cyclic existence, or to go to the

and the participants are given a semi-solid food (suchas rice congee) to break the silence, after which theycan talk again for that day. In this way, it will continueto last for 16 days altogether, and hence one wouldhave received a total of eight vows for this fastingceremony (nyung-ne).

Hence, it is not quite possible for those peoplewho do not have strong will-powers to participatein this fasting ceremony (nyung-ne). In purifyingobscurations of many past lifetimes, in eliminating

the toxic substances in the human body, in trainingones persistent will-power, in elevating ones spiritualclarity of mind, in transcending the painful experiencesof hunger, as well as in confessing ones breaking ofprecepts and samayas, this is an experiential practicewhich is most helpful and extremely powerful for onesDharma practice.

Establishing the Foundations for thePropagation of the Holy Dharma

His Holiness Chadral Rinpoche has always puthis energy and resources in establishing those thingsthat are mostconducive towards the genuine practiceof the Holy Dharma, in training his disciples, as wellas in beneting all sentient beings. Here we wouldlike to report on some of those major constructionsas follows:-

When His Holiness Chadral Rinpoche wasaround sixty years of age, His Holiness DudjomRinpoche II urgedHis Holiness (as predicted) to go tothe sacred land of Yangleshod(Pharping) [the sacredplace of accomplishment (chandho) where Guru

Rinpoche took the form of Vajrakumara and attainedthe Vidyadhara stage of the Great Seal (Mahamudra)

realization] to build a retreat center there, so that it willbe most benecial to both the Holy Dharma and all

sentient beings.Hence, His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche II had

personally accompanied His Holiness to Yangleshodin observing the site over there, as well as in decidingon the plans for construction. Hence, in this supremesacred place of Yangleshod, His Holiness ChadralRinpoche had founded a retreat center called theJoyous Grove of the Accomplishment of the Glorious

Awareness-Holder (Pal Rigdzin Drubpe Ghatsal),as well as a small Gompa, in fullling the prophecies

made about His Holiness great deeds by the pastSaints.

Furthermore, in Godavari of Nepal, one of thetwenty-four sacred places of Dakinis, His Holinesshad founded the retreat center named the Place ofthe Supreme Accomplishment of Meditation on theHighest Luminosity (Lame sel Ting-dzin Chok-drupLing), and had built a Burmese style of Buddhist stupacalled the Great Stupa Which Upon Seeing Liberates

    (Chorten Tongdrol Chenmo).

three upper realms. Hence, the closure of this aperturewill lead to ones loss of the chance for salvation. It is

most advisable for all Dharma practitioners, both forthemselves and for others, not to smoke at all! HisHoliness Chadral Rinpoche also reminds all Dharmapractitioners to refrain from alcoholism as well.

    The Annual Fasting Ceremony(Nyung-ne)

Another great Enlightened Activity of HisHoliness Chadral Rinpoche is to conduct the annualfasting ceremony (nyung-ne) of puja, during the Lord

Buddhas FestivalofEnlightenmentfor sixteen days. This is a practice that one can do while living a familylife, when one is so busy with no time to do extensivepractice or retreat, so that this practice can combinevarious skillful means to quickly complete the worksof accumulating merits, as well as in the puricationof obscurations.

For the rst day, itbegins with a vow andthe participants can haveliquid for the whole day,but only a lunch (without

onions, garlic, chilly, etc.)before noon time, andthey can talk for the day. Then for the second day,no food, no liquid and notalking is allowed for thewhole day, except withprayers and prostrations, until the next morningof the third day. Then, before the break of dawn,it begins with a new vow

initiations. They were determined not to go away, andso His Holiness nally agreed to give them a long-lifeinitiation. Men and women, whose previously cultivatedmerits, positive aspirations, and auspicious connectionshave ripened at the right time, had thus received allthe nectars and blessings of this Great Master. Afterthe initiation, these mountainous people sang beautifulsongs and danced, praising the great honor and glory,as well as all the Enlightened Activities of this MostExalted Master!

Displayingextraordinary qualities in the midst ofthe ordinary,His compassionate face shining from hissternness,Kneelingdown in front of this Awareness-holderamong humans,Beggingfor His nectars of Dharma teachings toow like rivers.

In such ways, His Holiness excellent deeds of

Enlightened Activity, like a wide white parasol thatspans all the existence in this world, have been like themedicine for nurturing the life-forceof Buddhism. HisHoliness extreme kindness is inexpressible in words andincomparable in scope! The continued presence of HisHoliness Lotus Feet on the wide and high adamantinethrone is like that of the brilliant sun shining in mid-day,dispelling all darkness of ignorance in this DegenerateAge! .(To be Continued)

In Yol-mo, a place which was foretold in bothThe Flower Ornament Discourse and The SevenProfound Chronicles, His Holiness had founded the

retreat center of the Spiritual Center of Ever-Excellency(Kunzang Chling). In Sikkim, His Holiness had foundedthe Guarding Courage Kathok Monastery (Pa-kyongKathok Gn). Outside the city of Darjeeling, he had alsofounded the monastery of the Spiritual Center of theMagnicent Ngayab Island (Phuntsok Ngayab Chling)in 1962 and its retreat center the Peak of Luminositythat Liberates All (Kundrol sel Tse).

In Bhutan, at the site of treasures and concealedland called Lang-drak, His Holiness had restoredthe retreat center of the Denitely Secret EternallyStable Place (Nge-sang Tak-ten Ling), founded byLongchenpas son, Gyalse Tulku Drakpa zer. In theseand many other places, His Holiness had established, inisolated mountains or valleys, many such retreat centerswith buildings and furnishings for Dharma practitioners.

Every year, His Holiness will go to these variousretreat centers, where retreatants are completing thethree-years retreat programs, and bestowed upon thoseworthy disciples with profound oral pith-instructionson the direct path to enlightenment within ones bodyand lifetime, that is, the luminous Great Perfection(Dzogchen).

In this way,His Holiness, now at the age of ninety-five, is still working tirelessly and ceaselessly for the

benets of all sentient beings, and has thus nurturedthe Holy Dharma and in upholding its propagation in thisDegenerate Age. People from all over the world ock into try to meet His Holiness, like unending rivers owinginto the one Great Ocean of Wisdom, in order to receiveHis Holiness personal blessings and teachings.

In the year 2000, just after the Tibetan New Year(Losar) of the new millennium, there were hundreds ofpeople, coming all the way from the mountain ranges ofthe Himalayas, all gathered in tents near the Gompa inYangleshod and sought for His Holiness blessings and
