Anxiety – how to help your child

All children experience anxious feelings as part of their normal childhood development. Some anxious feelings include fear, agitation, nervousness, worry and apprehension. Some children find it harder to get these feelings under control and may experience anxiety more intensely and more often than others. Anxiety is when the level of fear or worry about something is out of proportion to the level of risk or danger. Thinking about the situation makes them more worried and tense. If your child is experiencing anxiety try to: Acknowledge your child’s fear – don’t dismiss or ignore it. Gently encourage them to do things they’re anxious about, but don’t push them to face situations they’re not yet ready to face. Wait until they actually get anxious before you step in to help Praise him for doing something they’re anxious about, rather than criticising them for being afraid. Avoid labelling your child as ‘shy’ or ‘anxious’. Your child might need some extra support if their anxiety stops them from doing the things they want to do or interferes with their friendships, school work or family life.

If you are worried about your child, contact your local Community Health Nurse, School Psychologist or General Practitioner. For more information about anxiety in children go to www.raisingchildren.net.au or www.healthyfamilies.beyondblue.org.au

Parents/Guardians of Year 2/3/4 students

Churchlands SHS would like to invite you, as a parent of a Year 2, 3 or 4 student at a school in our enrolment zone, to visit our school on the morning of Friday 23 March 2018. This visit will provide a “warts and all” opportunity to view our school’s facilities and the teaching and learning process during the morning.

The Principal, Mr Hunt, will make a brief presentation to you on the school’s educational vision and values together with important processes and policies. He will also use this opportunity to outline the outstanding academic performance of our Year 12 exit students, which gets lost in publicised tables due to the sheer size of our student population. Mr Hunt will introduce key staff and provide you with the opportunity to ask questions. In small groups parents will then be taken on a tour of the school. We anticipate the tour will finish at approximately 11.00am. Due to the anticipated size of the tour we ask parents not to bring any school aged children to the tour.

At the conclusion, a light morning tea will be served where follow up questions and conversations can be held with available staff.

Details are as follows:

Date: Friday 23 March 2018 Time: 9:15am Venue: Churchlands Concert Hall – on Lucca Street

Parking: Parking around the school site is at a premium hence I suggest the following:

No parking on school grounds as bays are all marked for staff that may arrive at different times during the day. From 9:05am onwards the bus bays along Lucca Street become available. There is limited parking at the pool and along Memory Close Parking does exist in side streets adjacent to both sides of the school. I look forward to meeting with you soon and please RSVP (9441 1700) to Administration for catering purposes.

Yours sincerely,

Bernie Dunn Associate Principal – Junior School March 2018
