year in a row for the family-friendly water ski show on Lake Minnewashta. But the history of the ski show actually goes back all the way to the 1950s, to a lake resort in Wautoma, Wis.
The Silvercryst Resort on Big Silver Lake was the place where Janie Jasin’s parents brought the family for summer vacations. Jasin, a well-known speaker and author, remembers that her father and a group of men orga-nized a ski show as a fund-raiser to help the resort’s family after a death. The ski show began in 1954 and continued until 1961.
“My dad got all the kids at the resort together,” Jasin said. “He put on the annual show and we kids would practice all summer long. It was for the families and the community. We had beauty queens, a boat parade and a ski show. I was a skier and I did the pyramid, ballet, barefoot.”
Jasin grew up, married and moved away. She and her hus-band, Jim, moved to Lake Min-newashta in the 1970s, and it wasn’t long before Jasin decided to carry on the water ski show tradition she’d grown up with.
“I did it in the ‘70s and ‘80s,” Jasin said. “Now my daughter is carrying it on … It is that family thing that draws us together in gratitude each Fourth of July. For those on Lake Minnewashta, being part of this family of lake lovers is a labor of love. For my daughter, Janet Quarberg, her husband, Paul, and my grand-children Natalie and Patrick it is part of something started long ago on another lake in Wisconsin.”
As technology has changed, the type of equipment, motors, skis, and boats that are used, so has the technology of organizing the ski show, Jasin pointed out.
“My dad would write out the schedule for the show in cray-on,” she said. “I used an IBM Se-lectric typewriter. My daughter Janet organizes everything on a great big spreadsheet.”

Three generations of water skiers have carried on the July 4 water ski extravaganza. What began on a lake in Wisconsin in the 1950s, has continued, in Minnesota, into 2008.
parade, picnic, and fi reworks show as long as Janet Jasin Quarberg can remember. Grow-ing up on Lake Minnewashta, she remembers the ski shows her mother organized and em-ceed. The July 4th ski show continued for another 5-7 years after the Jasins moved out of the neighborhood.
In the meantime, Quarberg grew up, got married and lived in a variety of locations in the Twin Cities. But it was always in the back of her mind to return to Lake Minnewashta. Then three years ago, she and her husband “fi nally found a home we could afford,” she said, just four doors down from her former childhood home.
“We went from a home that was built in 1993 to a ‘60s ram-bler,” she said. “The kids just looked at me like ‘what are you doing?’ But my mom said, Oh, just look out the windows. That’s what’s most important. You can fi x up the rest.’ We love it here.”
It didn’t take too long before old friends who also came back to the lake started thinking of the old days.
“Why don’t you do a ski show again?” one of Quar-berg’s friends suggested. “Our kids are fi nally old enough — they’re not infants anymore. I thought, ‘Well, why not. They have the desire, the skills.’”
Quarberg sent fl iers around to the neighbors, asking if there was interest.
“It’s funny how things come together,” she said. Turned out that a couple of neighbors had been with the University of Minnesota’s River Rats water ski shows, and they volun-teered their expertise and assistance in organizing the show and coaching the younger skiers.
“We’ve got some serious
show ski families,” Quarberg said. “Gus and Amy Siefker. They skied in the River Rats program. Amy actually skied at Cypress Gardens profession-ally. She’s doing the swivel ski. Their daughter Emma, 5, is do-ing doubles with her dad. She’s a gymnast so they’re doing all these fancy lifts.
“Hal Clague (of Chanhas-sen) was in the ski shows with me when I was a teen,” she said. “So he’s doing the show — like re-living his youth — with his daughter Alaina. Then there’s Paul Ness and his daughters Julienne and Noelle who will perform.
“What I like is that it is something that brings our little neighborhood together,” Quar-berg said. “We’re bonded by the love of the lake, and of families being together.”
