PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Many of the staff at Lake South said how different
the school was, during the height of the COVID-19
pandemic, without the full cohort of students. It
was quiet, almost eerily so. These comments came
flooding back to me as students returned last
week. I have thoroughly enjoyed seeing the smiling
faces, laughter and genuine happiness of students
as they have begun to reconnect with their friends
and teachers. It has truly been a privilege to watch.
It is a credit to our students, parents and staff that
the transition back to school has been so smooth. I
would like to take this opportunity to thank each
and every member of our school community for
their trust, support, understanding and resilience in
what has been a truly unbeknown time. It has
made this last week a rewarding and successful
one to be part of and I am looking forward to
continuing this momentum for the remainder of the
term and beyond.
Last week, the library underwent the beginning
steps of a much-needed update and makeover.
The first phase, the painting of the ceiling, has been
finished with dramatic results. A new interactive
whiteboard has been purchased and we are
eagerly awaiting its delivery. The school has
investigated the purchasing of new soft wall and
shelving to update the learning space. We are
hoping to have everything finalised before the end
of the year.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Do I have to send my child to school?
Yes. All students are expected to attend.
What if my child is sick?
If your child is sick, please advise the school
through the regular avenues. They will be marked
absent (Sick) as normal. If students are sick at
school, they will be sent home. Please follow the
health advice to stay at home if you are sick.
Where do I drop off and pick up my child?
Parents and carers are asked to drop off their child
at the school gate (either Reddall Parade or Pur Pur
Avenue) in the morning. We also ask that parents
and carers collect their children outside the school
gates in the afternoon wherever possible to limit
the number of adults on the school site.
Will the school bus be running?
Yes.
Is Before and After School Care open?
Yes.
Will remote learning still continue?
No.
Will the canteen operate?
Lake South is currently using Lake Illawarra High

ASSESSMENT AND REPORTING
Under the NSW Department of Education’s
curriculum planning and programming, assessing
and reporting to parents K-12 policy, schools are
required to provide parents and carers with formal
and informal opportunities to receive information
about their child’s learning.
Schools have recently received information
regarding temporary changes to this policy in
response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The changes
apply to Semester 1 2020 only.
Schools are required to provide a written report to
parents and carers about students’ learning in
Semester 1. The changes allow schools to have the
flexibility to modify reports based on adjustments to
learning during this time. The grading of students
using the usual five-point A to E scale is not
required.
The staff is currently developing a reporting format
that will provide a summative account of your
child’s progress and achievement of learning
covered during Semester 1, at school and at
home, with information about their next steps.
Student reports for Semester 2 will be delivered
using the A to E grading as in previous reporting
cycles.
ASSESSMENT
Student assessment remains an important process
in the teaching and learning cycle that enables
teachers to:
monitor student progress
provide feedback to students on the learning
that has taken place
guide teachers in their ongoing provision of
appropriate learning opportunities
make adjustments for students whose learning
is affected by the current context, including
students with a disability
report to parents and carers on student
learning progress.
Teachers will use opportunities as students return to
school to gather further information about student
progress; however, as this has been a very different
and unusual year, the same level or style of
assessments may be very different to previous
years.
REPORTING
It is important to acknowledge that all students
may not have covered the same outcomes or
content over the period that they have been
engaged in remote learning. Approaches to
reporting may also vary for year groups within a
school. Our school will be able to:
provide a simplified written report in an
accessible format that is easy for parents and
carers to understand
describe a summative account of student
progress and achievement on the learning
covered in Semester 1
provide teacher comments to describe
student learning and identify the next steps in
learning (grading students A to E is not
required)
provide information about student attendance
and commitment to learning
provide written reports prior to 30th August
BABY ANNOUNCEMENT
Mrs Trotter and her husband welcomed Cali Grace
to their family last Monday, a little earlier than

extend their congratulations to the Trotter family on
their new arrival.
BIKE DAYS

Years 3 to 6 are scheduled for the bike track each
Monday and students in Kindergarten to Year 2 are

Maths) skills of creativity and problem solving while

A new date for online applications. Parents and
carers must apply between Tuesday 9 June and
Friday 26 June 2020. Late applications cannot be
accepted.
A new test date – Wednesday 16 September
2020.

https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-
schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-

SCHOOL PAINTING
A number of modifications have been made
around the school to ensure the safe mobility of
students and adults whilst on site. Yellow contrast
markings have been added to poles, hand railings
and stairs. Further markings will be added to the
edge of footpaths. It is anticipated this work will
continue for the rest of this week. Once the
painting has concluded, modifications to the front
entrance to the school will begin. These
modifications will allow easier access to our front
office by eliminating the stairs. A number of ramps
are also planned to improve access into a number
of buildings around the school.
KINDERGARTEN 2021
We are now taking enrolments for Kindergarten
2021. We ask that all families please advise the

NATIONAL SIMULTANEOUS
STORYTIME
A big thank you to our wonderful librarian, Mrs
Koerner, for organising Lake Illawarra South Public
School’s involvement in National Simultaneous
Storytime. Students had a great time listening to
the fabulous tale of Whitney and Britney Chicken
Divas. Giggles could be heard across the school as
students watched online versions of the book and
listened to teachers reading the story aloud.
RECONCILIATION WEEK
National Reconciliation Week is on the same time
each year between 27 May and 3 June. It is a time
for all Australians to learn about our shared
histories, cultures and achievements, and to
explore how each of us can contribute to
achieving reconciliation in Australia. This year’s
theme is ‘In this together”.
2020 marks the twentieth anniversary of the
reconciliation walks of 2000, when people came
together to walk on bridges and roads across the
nation to show their support for a more reconciled
Australia.
As always, we stand on the shoulders of those who
came before us and Australians now benefit from
the efforts and contributions of people committed
to reconciliation in the past. Today, we work
together to further the national journey towards a
fully reconciled country. Reconciliation is a journey
for all Australians – as individuals, families,
communities, organisations and importantly as a
nation. At the heart of this journey are relationships
between the broader Australian community and
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
On this journey, Australians are all “In this together”;
every one of us has a role to play when it comes to
reconciliation, and in playing our part we
collectively build relationships and communities
that value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
peoples, histories and cultures. The NSW
Department of Education is committed to
supporting the reconciliation process and National
Reconciliation Week.
