“News From Your School Library”

Dear students and families,

Welcome to a new school year and another year of reading and learning in your school library. It was wonderful to meet students and their families at our Back-to-School event. Everyone was so kind and welcoming. I’m very excited to be your school’s teacher-librarian!

It’s important to start the year with an understanding of our school’s check out and overdue policy. I am teaching our students to remember to return their books on time so that they can continue to grow as readers and meet their learning goals. It will also help them avoid unnecessary worries over lost books and fines.

Check Out Students, teachers, and adult family members are encouraged to check out books from our Library. All library patrons may borrow materials for two weeks. • Kindergarten check out one or two books per week depending

on the time of year. They usually turn in the book(s) within a week.

• First graders check out three books per week. They usually turn in the book(s) within a week.

• 2nd and 3rd graders may borrow four books. • 4th and 5th graders may borrow five books. • 6th graders may borrow six books.

Overdue Books • Books are overdue if they have not been turned in within two

weeks. • Students will be reminded at library class time that they have

an overdue book that they should turn in or renew. • When a student has two or more overdue books, they will no

longer be able to check out books. Their teacher and family will be notified. Books are overdue if they have not been turned in within two weeks.

• If a student is unable to check out due to overdue books, a parent can contact the library to let us know that they are aware of the situation. Once the parent contacts the library, the student can resume checking out books.

Our Library Welcomes Volunteers I should also note that our library welcomes volunteers to help us with the many tasks that take place in the library. Any time you can give us is a great help! We are very flexible about the time you choose to spend with us. If you’re interested in volunteering or have any questions, please email me at [email protected]. You can also stop by at any time.

See you in the library!

LFP Birthday Celebration Policy (adopted Sept 2014):

Birthday Celebrations at LFP

Due to the growing number of allergies and health concerns for our students, the LFP staff celebrates

student birthdays with a non-food celebration. Each classroom teacher finds a special way to honor each student on his/her birthday. Some examples are: having the student wear a crown, singing to the child, and writing compliments to the birthday child. Students are welcome to donate a gently used or new book to be added to the class or school library in the child’s name in honor of his/her birthday. We appreciate your support and ask that you please do not send in food treats for your child’s birthday. Thank you.

Parent/sGuardian’s Right-to-Know

At LFP, we are very proud of our teachers and feel they are ready for the coming school year and are prepared to give your child a high-quality education. As a Title I school, we must meet federal rules related to teacher qualifications as defined in No Child Left Behind. These rules allow you to learn more about your child’s teachers’ training and credentials. We are happy to provide this information to you. At any time, you may ask:

• Whether the teacher met state qualifications and certification requirements for the grade level and subject he/she is teaching,

• Whether the teacher received an emergency or conditional certificate through which state qualifications were waived, and

• What undergraduate or graduate degrees the teacher holds, including graduate certificates and additional degrees, and major(s) or area(s) of concentration.

You may also ask whether your child receives help from a paraprofessional. If your child receives this assistance, we can provide you with information about the paraprofessional’s qualifications.

Our staff is committed to helping your child develop the academic knowledge and critical thinking he/she needs to succeed in school and beyond. That commitment includes making sure that all of our teachers and paraprofessionals are highly skilled.

If you have any questions about your child’s assignment to a teacher or paraprofessional, please contact me at [email protected]
