SUMMER... 11

By Holly Thorpe

For Lake Chelan This Week

Having settled in a mile from downtown Chelan

last summer, the Lookout Village has made itself quite

at home in the sunny valley of Chelan. But that doesn’t

mean they’re out of the public eye. This weekend

they’re introducing their newest contribution to the

Chelan outdoors scene with the opening of their public

park.

“It’s a chance to see the park, to see what this is all

about,” said Laura Harris, Sales Agent. “To see what

new urbanism looks and feels like.”

New urbanism is the set of principles the Lookout is

designed on — porches that face the road, communal

fire pits, and now, a public park at the heart of the

village. The entire idea is to create a community of

neighbors who know each other’s names. But the

experience isn’t just limited to the people living or

vacationing there.

“People are welcome to come in and look around,”

Harris said. The park has a large field and a pickleball

court. Not sure what pickleball is? Think tennis, but

with a whiffle ball and slightly different racquets. The

court is dug into the earth, with a wall of grass and

boulders in place of a wire fence.

“There’s a great big field,” added Harris. “Where

people are pulling out their lacrosse nets, and flying

kites.”

The opening of the park will take place largely in

the main field, with live music by the local Kevin

Jones Band from 1 to 3 p.m., entertainment by L-Bow

the Clown from noon until 2 p.m. and Country Boy’s

BBQ served from 12:30 to 2 p.m. In addition to the

festivities, there will be hula hoops, bubbles, and, of

course, pickleball.

Visitors will also get the chance to meet Chelan’s

newest bike shop, Cycle Central.

But most importantly, it’s a chance to build

community in one of Chelan’s most unique

neighborhoods.

“It’s a different way of living,” Harris said. “You can

really feel it and see it.”

This week’s pick:

About:

Having alighted in Chelan in 2004 after six years of winemaking, Nefarious has settled quite comfortably into it’s picturesque spot on the south shore. The name of the winery is a play on the last name of owners Heather and Dean Neff. The Neffs opened their tasting room in 2006.

Specializing in Syrah, Riesling, and Viognier, Nefarious produces 2,000 cases of wine per year.

The Neffs recently opened a guest house, which was previously their home. It ranges from $275 to $425 per night depending on the time of year the booking is for, and it must be reserved for a minimum of two nights. For more information on the guest house or to book a trip, visit guesthouseatnefarious.com.

They recommend…

The Syrah, which has been in the Wine Enthusiast’s Top 100 several times, as well as the Riesling, which was in the top 100 last year.

Why stop by?

INefarious has two winemakers, whereas most wineries have one. They also don’t do big events, like some wineries do, but feature daily tasting room hours. “We’re very passionate about making wine,” Heather said. “We really wanted to focus on making a beautiful tasting experience.”
