In March we applied for a grant to start Comprehensive Community Planning. Comprehensive Community Planning is a program designed to bring citizens together to talk about the big picture of our Nation, subjects such as governance, health, and community services. We are happy to report that our application was approved; therefore, we will be starting brainstorming sessions with our citizens within the next couple of months. We have new representatives from the Provincial Government joining us at the main table. Stuart Gale is our new Provincial Chief Negotiator. He has brought on three other Provincial team members who hold great reputations among the Laich-Kwil-Tach Treaty Team. Part of the delay in treaty negotiations is due to high turnover of government representatives, which the Provincial Government is fully aware of. We look forward to working with this new team. The Provincial Government is working on a program designed to look at land overlaps between Nations. This will help identity land disputes before they arise within the treaty process. As an example, if three Nations request a certain land selection as Treaty Settlement Lands, one Nation will receive that land, and the other two may be compensated with another land options or with money. The Laich-Kwil-Tach Treaty Society, and the Federal and Provincial governments are in the process of reviewing our Agreement in Principle (AIP) chapter by chapter. Our first chapter review meeting is June 6 in Campbell River. Thank you for reading! If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to email [email protected] or call 250.895.0043.
