ArvoisAt FinnWestin osallistujat, hyvät nai-
set ja herrat. Haluan omasta ja suomen valtiovallan puolesta lausua lämpimän tervehdykseni kaikille Ka-nadan suomalaisten suur-juhlien osallistujille täällä Burnabyssä, Brittiläisessä Kolumbiassa. Näin valtaisat juhlat eivät synny käden käänteessä. valmistelut ovat kestäneet vuosia, työtunteja laskematta, suomalaiselta
talkoopohjalta. En voi olla ihailematta ponnistelujen tulosta, josta saamme nauttia seuraavat kolme päivää . ohjelma on vaikuttava ja todella kattava. Haluankin vilpittömästi kiittää kaikkia juhlien järjestämiseen osallistuneita henkilöitä ja tahoja. ilmassa alkaa olla suomalaisen urheilujuhlan tuntua.
vuosi vuoden jälkeen te Kanadan suomalaiset innos-tuneesti kokoonnutte vuotuisille suurjuhlille. Nyt jo järjestyksessään 72. kerran. suuret muuttoaallot Kana-daan ovat jo vuosikymmenien takana mutta suoma-laisuus ja suomalaisen kulttuuriperinnön vaaliminen voivat hyvin. Hienoa, että haluatte pitää kiinni juuris-

tanne ja olette niistä oikealla tavalla ylpeitä. vuoden mittaan eri puolilla Kanadaa suomi-toiminta on monin eri tavoin läsnä: suomi-kouluista veteraaniyhdistyksiin, suomenkielisten sanomalehtien uutterasta toimittami-sesta aina perheissä vaalittavaan suomen kielen harras-tamiseen saakka.
vireä ja toimiva ulkosuomalaisverkosto täällä Ka-nadassa hyödyttää monella tavalla kaukaisen suomen elinkeino-, kulttuuri- ja poliittista elämää. sitä ei aina tule ajatelleeksi. siitäkin valtiovalta haluaa lausua teille kiitoksensa. suomen hallitus arvostaa ulkosuomalaisia ja pyrkii toimissaan ottamaan huomioon myös teidän etunne. toki teidän täällä asuvien suomalaisten vahva kulttuuri-identiteetti tekee teistä aktiivisia toimijoita myös uudessa kotimaassanne, Kanadassa.
Keskeinen vaikutuskanavanne Ulkosuomalaispar-lamentti tekee ehdotuksia asemanne parantamiseksi. sen toiminnan ja myös suomen hallituksen tavoit-teena on mm. kirjeäänestämisen mahdollistaminen ulkosuomalaisille. viime kevään eduskuntavaaleissa äänestettiin ottawan suurlähetystössä ja kunniakon-sulaateissa aikaisempaa selvästi vilkkaammin. varmaa on, että kirje- tai internet-äänestämisen ollessa mah-dollinen, täältä tulevien äänien määrä kasvaisi huomat-tavasti. Ensi tammikuussa pääsette taas uurnille kun suomessa järjestetään presidentinvaalit. suurlähetystö
pyrkii mahdollistamaan en-nakkoäänestämisen entistä useammalla kunniakonsulaat-tipaikkakunnalla.
Hyvät Kanadan suomalaiset
Kansalaisuuslaki muuttuu 1.9.2011. sen perusteella entinen suomen kansalainen voi saada menettämänsä kansalaisuuden takaisin. tämä tapahtuu ilmoitusme-nettelyllä uuden lain tultua voimaan. Kansalaisuuden saa riippumatta siitä, asuuko entinen suomen kansa-lainen suomessa vai ulkomailla. Uudessa laissa myös kansalaisuuden säilyttäminen 22-vuotta täyttäessä selkiintyy. riittää kun on pelkästään hakenut suomen passia 18-21 vuotiaana.

tHE 2011 FiNNWEst LEctUrE sEriEs featured speakers presenting a range of topics from the
history of the Finnish Lion to the influence of Finnish and Nordic Liturgical music on North American church music.
Allan Ailo, a well known expert in Heraldry, captured the interest of his audiences with a well researched history of the Finnish Lion. We learned that the Finnish Lion went through several transformations from medieval times to the present. the logo was first documented in the 1580’s and the current version has been official since 1978. We also heard that the Finnish Lion was used as a logo for commercial products such as Finlandia vodka. Allan is a talented graphic artist and he brought along some
examples of his work to illustrate the art of heraldry. there was good audience participation in this session and people stayed to ask questions at the end.
Irene McCutcheon presented a history of the Finnish Hall in vancouver going back to the early
FinnWest 2011 Lecturesdays in the 1920’s and 30’s. the Finnish Hall on Penticton street in vancouver was active from 1912 until it was sold in 1971. irene told us the Hall provided a rich cultural Heritage with plays, concerts, dances, sports events, weddings and funerals. irene’s presentation included many old pictures of stage plays and concerts at the Hall. the audience was amazed at the elaborate costumes available in the wardrobe for the stage plays. Although it is no longer a Finnish Hall, the building is still in use today. it is a monument to the skills and hard work of Finnish immigrants. All of this work was completed with volunteer labour as was the case with the many Finnish halls across canada.
Ernest Hekkanen kept everyone entertained with readings from his stories and poems. His reading of My Unfinished Heart from Wintering Over touched on universal sadness over past losses. Ernest is not without humour. in his reading of Dad went back to Finland we saw Ernest at his humorous best. Ernest left his audiences wanting more. His books are published by himself under New orphic Publishers in Nelson, B. c. Ernest is also a printmaker, painter and sculptor. He and Margrith schraner
co-curate the New orphic Gallery in Nelson B. c. obviously, Ernest has many talents.
Jonathan Rundman, one of the two Kaivama musicians, gave an excellent workshop on Finnish and Nordic Liturgy and its impact on North American church music. Jonathan brought along examples of old and new church music and
explained some of the history behind the music. He is a talented composer and musician. the audience sang along with him when he got out his guitar to play some of the beautiful hymns in his repertoire. it was unfortunate that more people did not attend this workshop as it was a musical treat.
Paula Wild, author of Sointula, Island Utopia gave a presentation on her research in sointula and subsequent award winning book exploring the history of sointula from it’s beginnings in 1901.
the story of sointula, with its charismatic founder Matti Kurikka and reputation for free love (although unfounded) has always fascinated audiences. the audience at the Manor was no exception.

Vancouver Finlandia Club perustettiin vuonna 1971 yhdistämään ja valistamaan Brittiläisessä Columbiassa asuvia suomalaisia sekä kehittämään heidän ruumillista ja henkistä hyvinvointiaan ja tekemään Suomea tunnetuksi kanadalaisille kuten myös Kanadaa ja sen

Vancouver Finlandia Club was formed in 1971 to integrate and enlighten the Finnish population in British Columbia in order to improve the well-being of its members, both in body and spirit, and to make Finland known to Canadians as well as Canada and its culture known to Finnish people.

Kesä alkaa olla pikku hiljaa ohi ja koulujen alkuun on enaa 3 viikkoa. Minulle henkilökohtaisesti
se tarkoittaa, että arki rutiinit alkavat jälleen. Lapset palaavat kouluun.
tänä kouluvuonna tyttäreni Eveliina valmistuu lu-kiosta ja poikani Markus aloittaa keskikoulun uudessa koulussa ja siirtyy ranskan kielen linjalle. toivottavas-ti siitä, että hän on käynyt suomikoulua ihan pienestä pitäen, on hyötyä toisessakin kielessa. Pojan futis harrastus vie kaksi iltaa viikossa ja yhden päivän vii-konloppuna. onneksi tyttäreni on jo niin iso, että voi käydä tanssikoulussa ihan itsekseen. siihen kun plä-jäytetään vielä minun kokopäivä työni, jooga tuntini ja vapaaehtoistoiminta vancouver Finlandia clubissa niin kiirettä riittää. onneksi oli kesäloma joka vietet-tin suomessa perheen ja ystävien kanssa. Niinkuin sisareni sanoi, minä elän tällä hetkellä ruuhkavuosia.
ruuhkasta huolimatta olen sitä mieltä, että van-couver Finlandia clubin toiminta on minulle niin tärkeä, että haluan olla aktiivisesti mukana. Kaikkein lähinnä sydäntäni on suomikoulu, jonka toiminnassa olen ollut mukana vuosia (onneksi muut ovat otta-neet tehtävät hoitaakseen) ja kirjasto josta olen lai-nannut monta hyvää kirjaa ja joskus jopa tuonut niitä suomesta asti lomilta tulessani. varsinkin kirjasto on
jäsenistön kovassa käytössä. olen itse nähnyt kun sieltä on lainattu kassikaupalla kirjoja. Länsirannikon Uutiset on aina kiva lukea ja olen tilannut sen suomessa asuville vanhemmil-leni ja appi vanhemmilleni, jotta hekin näkevät mitä täällä lännessa tapahtuu.
tulevaisuus tulee varmaan olemaan klubille haas-teellinen, varsinkin kun ns. Bingorahoitus on meidan kohdaltamme näillä näkymin ohi. toivottavasti kult-turille lähi tulevaisuudessa löytyy lisärahoitusta. Joh-tokunnan täytyy paneutua rahoituksen hoitamiseen tosissaan ja kukkaron nyörejä varmasti kiristää. Mutta siita huolimatta toivomme, etta klubissa toiminnat voisivat jatkua lähes ennallan ja vielä jotain uuttakin pitäisi kehitellä, että saataisiin klubista taas aktiivinen paikka johon halutaan kuulua.
Hyvät ehdotukset otetaan aina huomioon. syksyn aikana aloitamme taas klubi illat joihin toivoisimme enemmänkin osallistujia.
Mutta tässä vain muutamia ajatuksia näin syksyn kynnyksellä. Kaikille hyvää syksyn alkua ja toivotto-vasti tavataan vaikka klubi illassa!

Jaakko Noso
JAAKKo Noso syntyi 26. heinäkuuta 1913 Lappeen-rannassa. Hän muutti Lempäälän ja viialan kautta
Järvenpäähän, missä asui sodan aikana. Häntä ei kutsut-tu talvisotaan, vaan hän oli siviilipoliisina. Hän oli iloi-nen siitä, että pääsi lähtemään siviilipoliisin hommista aikaisemmin kuin muut, ennen talvisodan loppua.
AseistakieltäytyjäKun jatkosota alkoi, Nosokin joutui sotaan. Hän oli
tavallisesta poikkeava, sillä uskovaisena hän otti heti sen asenteen, ettei tarvitse asetta. Hänen vakaumuk-sensa oli, että Kaikkivaltias Jumala voi hänet varjella vihollisten käsistä ja hyökkäyksistä, kunhan hän vain elää omatuntonsa ja uskonsa mukaan. sotaanlähtöpäi-vänä hän oli kokoamispaikassa ilman asetta ja ihmeis-sään. Muut miehet kun olivat kaikki siinä kun-nossa, että olivat valmiina lähtemään sotaan. Noso seisoi rivissä yhtenä, ja tuli tarkastus. Majuri ei Noson kohdalla huomannut ollen-kaan, ettei tällä ollut asetta. Näin ollen Noso lastattiin autoon muiden muassa. sotaa oli ollut jo jokunen viikko, ja suomen armeija oli edennyt kymmenisen kilometriä rajajoesta Lenin-gradiin päin.
Perillä ihmeteltiin, että mitäs täällä semmoisella miehellä kuin Noso oikein tehdään, kun hänellä ei ole asetta. Noso kieltäytyi edelleen aseesta, eikä häntä vastustettu. sen sijaan hän joutui hevosmieheksi etu-linjassa olevaan komppaniaan. se oli tavallaan vaaral-lisempaakin kuin tavallisena sotamiehenä oleminen. Hän joutui liikkumaan hevosen kanssa linjalla ja joutui monta kertaa tykistötulen alaiseksi. Hän muistelee kuinka kerran rajajoen toisella puolella joutui purka-maan tiilirakennusta keskellä päivää. Noson mielestä
se ei ollut keskipäivän työ, mutta se oli määräys, joten mentävä oli. Heitä oli kolme hevosmiestä, ja he pääsi-vät purettavan rakennuksen viereen. tiilet tarvittiin korsuihin, ja Noso sai muutaman tiilen kärryyn. silloin alkoi tykistötulitus. Hevonen pelästyi niin, että Noso hädin tuskin sai ohjakset käsiinsä. sitten mentiin, hevonen meni tietysti niin lujaa kuin pääsi. Noso pelkäsi kaatuvansa kovassa menossa. rotkopaikastakin mentiin yli ja sen toisella puolella ylös noustessa iso tykin kranaatti tuli aivan viereen, muttei räjähtänyt. Noso katsoi, että se oli Jumalan varjelusta. tämmöisiä tapauksia oli useita. Kranaatteja tuli paljon, pitkin ja ympärille.
Läheltä piti ja monta kertaasodassa Noson tuntemukset olivat suuria juuri lä-
heltä piti -kokemusten kautta. Hän uskoo, että Jumala varjelee, kun häneen luo-tetaan. Kerran peräänty-misvaiheessa Kuparsaaressa lähellä saimaan kanavaa Nosolla oli hevonen ja kärryissä muonakuorma. Hänen mukaansa lähti toi-nen mies hevosen kanssa, ilman kärryjä. Kärryt kun olivat jääneet rintamalinjan taakse, koska kärryjä vetä-nyt hevonen oli kaatunut. Nyt oltiin menossa hake-maan näitä kärryjä kolmen miehen ryhmässä. Kolmas
miehistä oli oppaana, Nosohan ei tiennyt missä linja kulkee. Miehet menivät maantietä pitkin, tie laskeu-tui ja tuli mäki. Eräs luutnantti seisoi keskellä tietä ja sanoi, että nyt tästä ei saa enää mennä, vihollinen on peltoaukion toisella puolella. Noso kiersi metsäalueen kautta, eikä hän huomannut, kuinka hänen kaverinsa, se joka oli ilman kärryjä hevosen kanssa, hävisi. Myö-hemmin selvisi, että kaveri oli saanut kiväärinluodin käteensä ja hänen oli täytynyt kääntyä takaisin.
Noso jatkoi matkaa oppaan kanssa ja ryssä ampui
kranaatteja. sitten linjassa olevia miehiä tuli hakemaan muonaansa. Miehiä tuli vain muutama, ja he sanoivat, ettei sieltä enää ketään tule, voit kyllä lähteä. Noso lähti menemään maantietä pitkin. Hän huomasi, että ryssän pommikone tuli ihan tien kohdalla ja suoraan häntä kohden! Noso tarkasteli asiaa ja ajatteli, että tuskin he nyt pommikoneella sentään alkavat häntä jahtaamaan. Mutta annapas olla, kun kone ehti kohdal-le, luukut aukesivat ja pommeja tuli. Mutta pommit menivät sen verran ohitse, etteivät saaneet aikaan mitään vahinkoa.
Noso jatkoi matkaa edelleen ja vastaan tuli kaksi miestä, joilla oli puolapaareilla kaksi haavoittunutta. He pyysivät Nosoa ottamaan haavoittuneet kärryyn-sä. Miehet nostivat haavoittuneet kärryihin, mutta Noso ei päässyt pitkällekään kun tykistötulitus alkoi. tulitusta kesti, ja hevonen pelkäsi ja riuhtoi niin, että ohjas katkesi. Noso mietti, että nythän hän ei voi enää edes hillitä hevostaan, mitä ihmettä hän nyt tekee? Noso päätti rukoilla siinä, ja hevonen seisahtui heti ihan paikalleen. silloin Noso sai tilaisuuden heittäytyä maahan, ojaan jossa oli vettä. Hän kastui, mutta tykis-tötulitus alkoi loppua, tuli enää vain muutama. Noso nousi ylös, solmi ohjakset ja nosti haavoittuneet takai-sin kärryille. He olivat vetäneet itsensä maahan he-vosen rimpuillessa, kärryt olivat kiven takana. Matka jatkui taas, Noso ohjasti hevosta maantiellä ja hevonen juoksi kovaa. Kranaatteja tuli molemmin puolin, mutta ne eivät tehneet vahinkoa. tuli mäki vastaan ja se kat-kaisi näkyvyyden. tulitus lakkasi, ja Noso ajeli rauhalli-semmin kanavan rannalle, missä oli parakki haavoittu-neiden kokoamispaikkana. sieltä tuli heti kaksi miestä, jotka veivät haavoittuneet parakkiin. Noso jatkoi mat-kaa lähtöpaikkaansa. siellä oli hänen kaverinsa, toinen hevosmies, joka oli haavoittunut käteen.
sitten tuli määräys, että komppania pääsisi muuta-man päivän rintamalevolle, toiselle puolelle rajajokea. He ehtivät olla vain pari päivää, kun ryssä aloitti suur-hyökkäyksen. Komppanian tilalle oli tuotu miehiä, jotka eivät olleet vielä kokeneet sotaa. ryssä pääsi helposti läpi, koska uusi komppania pakeni. Kaikki he joutuivat sitten pakenemaan, ajamaan pois. Nosolla oli patruunakuorma, mutta hän oli jättänyt sen kauem-maksi. tuli mies, joka oli lähetetty hakemaan Noson jättämä kärry. Mies ehti riisua hevosensa pois tyhjän kärryn edestä ja lähti pois hevosen kanssa. Noso otti tyhjän kärryn ja meni hakemaan omaa kuormaansa. Perillä jonkun matkan päässä hän näki miehiä jo pat-ruunakärryn kimpussa. Hänen ei enää passannut men-nä patruunoja hakemaan, joten hänelle jäi vain tyhjät kärryt. sota-aikana rakennettiin myös puolustuslinjaa. siinä oli teräksestä valettuja ampumakoppeja. Kun Noso joutui seisomaan sellaisen lähellä, hän huomasi kuinka venäläinen pommikone lähestyi. sitten siihen tuli suomalainen hävittäjäkone ja kehkeytyi taistelu. taistelun jälkeen venäläinen pommikone syttyi pala-maan ja putosi ihan lähelle.
Kun oli jo peräännytty ohi Kivennavan kirkon, miehet ja päällystö rupesivat miettimään, että mitähän tästä on seurauksena, kohtahan olemme Pohjanlahdel-la. Noso rukoili itsekseen. Komppanian päällikkö tuli sanomaan, että nyt on tilanne sellainen, että Nosonkin on otettava ase. Päällikkö antaisi luvan, että vaikka vain kärryille, asetta ei tarvitse itse kantaa. Noso vas-tasi, että hän ei ota asetta kärryillekään. sen sijaan Noso rukoili, että rauha tulisi. Parin päivän päästä tuli ihan yllättäen ilmoitus, että on tullut rauha. sitä ei meinannut uskoa mitenkään. Kävi niin, että saksalaiset olivat lähestymässä stalingradia, ja tarvittiin enemmän miehiä sinne. venäjän oli tehtävä rauha suomen kans-sa saadakseen miehiä stalingradin rintamalle. rauha tuli ihan kuin huomaamatta. suomalaisia kaatui noin 80.000. Myöhemmin oli lehdessä, että suomen rinta-malta venäjä menetti miehiä yli 200.000. oli suomen pelastus, että rauha tuli niin aikaisin.

JAAKKo Noso was born July 26th in 1913, in Lap-peenranta. First he moved to Lempäälä and to viiala
and finally to Järvenpää, where he lived during the war. He was not drafted for the Winter War, but spent the time as a civilian police. He was glad that he was allowed to leave his civilian police duty earlier than the others, before the Winter War was over.
Conscientious ObjectorWhen the continuation War broke out, even Noso
was drafted. He was different. As a believer, his atti-tude from day one was that he did not need a gun. He believed if he lived following his conscience and faith, then the Almighty God would watch over him and protect him from the enemy and any of their attacks.
the day came when he had to leave to go to war. He was at the gathering place, and he was perplexed. All the other men were ready to go to war. Noso was standing in a row, and it became time to inspect the troops. the Major, who was inspecting the troops, passed by Noso and failed to notice that he did not have a gun. thus Noso was loaded up on the truck with all the other men. At this time the war had last-ed a few weeks, and the Finnish Army had advanced about ten kilometres from the border river rajajoki towards Leningrad.
When the truck arrived in its destination, the people looked at Noso and wondered at what they were supposed to do with a man with no gun. Noso continued to refuse a gun, and met no opposition. instead he was made a horseman for the troops in the front line. in a way it was more dangerous than be-ing a just a regular soldier. He had to manoeuvre the horse on the front line and was often under artillery fire. He remembers how once, on the other side of the rajajoki, he had to dismantle a brick building in the middle of the day. He did not think it was a task suit-able for the middle of the day, but those were his or-ders, so he had to go. they were three men with their horses, and they got to the building that was to be dismantled. the bricks were to be used for the dug-outs in the trenches. Noso got a few bricks into his cart. then the shelling started. the horse was startled, and Noso barely got the reins before the horse bolted.
the horse ran as fast as it could. Noso was afraid that he would fall at high speed. they even crossed a site of a gorge. Ascending on the other side of the gorge, an artillery shell landed right next to him. it did not explode. Noso sees this as God watching over him. this happened many times. the shells were landing here, there and everywhere, and there were plenty of them.
Close Calls and Lots of Themin the war Noso experienced many incredible close
calls. He firmly believes that if you trust in God, he will watch over you. once, towards the end of the war when the troops were retreating in Kuparsaari near the saimaa canal, Noso had a horse and a cart full of food for the troops. With him came another man, also with a horse, but no cart. A cart had been left behind the enemy lines as the horse pull-ing the cart had been killed. Now a group of three was go-ing to go and retrieve that cart. the third man was the guide, as Noso had no idea where the front line was. they proceeded on the road, first downhill, and then there was a hill. A Lieutenant was standing in the middle of the road. He told them that no one was allowed to go through; the enemy was on the other side of the field. Noso made a detour in the for-est, but he did not notice that his friend, the one with a horse and no cart, had disappeared. Later it turned out that a rifle bullet had hit his arm and he had had to turn back.
Noso kept going with the guide, and the russians kept shelling. then the men from the front line came to get their food. there were only a few of them, and they told Noso no one else would come, you can go. Noso started back on the road. He noticed that a russian bomber was approaching, above the road and straight towards him! He looked at the plane, thought for a moment, and came to the conclusion that the rus-sians would certainly not chase him with a bomber. But lo and behold, as the plane was above him, the hatches opened and the bombs started dropping. But the bombs missed him and there was no damage whatsoever.
Noso kept going and met two men. they were carrying two wounded men on a stretcher. they asked Noso to take the wounded men on his cart. the men lifted the wounded on the cart. Noso kept go-ing, but did not get far until the shelling started. the shelling kept going and the horse was so scared and kept pulling away, breaking the reins. Noso was at his wits end: he was not even able to rein in the horse, what should he do now? He decided to pray, then and there. the horse calmed down instantly. that gave Noso the opportunity to throw himself on the ground, into the ditch full of water. He got wet, but the shelling came to its end, there were only a few stray ones now. He got up, tied the reins, and lifted the wounded back onto the cart. they had pulled themselves on the ground as the horse was thrashing around. the cart was behind a rock. Again Noso kept going, he was steering the horse on the road and the horse ran hard. Grenades fell on both sides, but they did no harm. When he got to a hill, the enemy lost sight of him. the shelling ended and he was able to drive to the saimaa canal at a much more leisurely pace. By the canal there was a gathering place for the wounded. two men came right away to take the wounded inside the building. Noso kept going to his point of origin. there, waiting for him was his friend, the horseman who was shot in the arm.
then an order was given that the troops were al-lowed a few days rest from the front, on the other side of the border river rajajoki. they only had two days of rest before the russians launched a massive offence. the Finnish troops had been replaced by men with no experience of war. the russians got thorough easily as the new men beat a hasty retreat. they all had to retreat, to drive away. Noso had his cart loaded
with cartridges, but the cart was not close by. A man who was supposed to pick up the cart came by. All he had time for was to leave his empty cart, before he left with his horse. Noso took this empty cart to retrieve the load of cartridges. Before he got there he saw the enemy by the cart full of cartridges. He knew he could not retrieve them any more. He was left with an empty cart. During the war the Finns were also building a line of defense. it included shoot-ing booths cast out of steel. once when Noso had to stand by one of them, he noticed a russian bomber approaching. A Finnish fighter plane intercepted it, and a battle ensued. After the battle the russian plane caught fire and went down close by.
At the end of the war the Finns kept retreating. once they retreated by the church in Kivennapa, the men and the officers started to think of the conse-
quences - soon they would be in the Gulf of Bothnia. Noso prayed by himself. the com-mander of the troops came to tell Noso that the situation demanded he take a gun. the commander would give Noso a special permit to have the gun in the cart; he would not even have to carry it himself. Noso replied that he would not take a gun, not even in the cart. instead he kept praying for peace. in a couple of days, totally out of the blue, there was an announcement that peace had been concluded. it was impossible to believe. it turned out that the Germans were approaching stalingrad, and more men were needed there. russia had to conclude peace with Finland to free men for the front in stalingrad. Peace came unawares. 80,000 Finns had died. Later, in the newspaper, it said that 200,000
russians had died on the Finnish front. the peace, concluded earlier than expected, saved Finland.
Taxed out of the Countryrussia demanded huge reparations from Finland.
After the war Noso had some unskilled jobs, but he also built a guitar or two. He took a guitar he had made himself to a musical instrument store in Hel-sinki. they greeted him enthusiastically: “We need more of these and quickly!” Noso founded a bigger workshop in a hurry, and his new occupation was to build instruments. He had a good start and a good name. However, in a few years he had to pay 250,000 marks in back taxes. He appealed to the sales tax office, and he wanted to know why he had to pay so much tax. After the appeal the back tax was halved to 125,000 marks.
Noso thought of leaving the country. However, he had a plan to build a chapel for the congregation. Maybe he could still try, and maybe he would be able to pay the tax in the future? But at christmas, a few months later, he received another back tax: 750,000 marks. then he knew that he could not handle it, that he would have to leave. He was desperate enough to apply to immigrate to canada. the tax office sold his machinery and tools at a tax sale. then Noso informed the tax office that he had laid off all his workers and his wish is to be free. He would work alone so that he does not need to pay the 20 % sales tax. the tax office agreed. Noso worked by himself for over a year. suddenly he received a new sales tax provision, over four million marks! He was informed that the tax of-fice had deemed that he needed to pay the sales tax after all - retroactively.
Noso considered leaving the country. He had to organize everything so that he was allowed to leave. that four million mark back sales tax went to the District court. At the court the Judge looked at the papers, confused about such heavy demands with no assets to match them. the matter was allowed to lapse, there was no other option. thus Noso dared to make another application to immigrate to canada. When canada accepted him, he quickly got ready to leave and left. He wondered then, and he still does, why he was taxed the way he was.
Verot ajavat pois Suomestavenäjä vaati suomelta suuret sotakorvaukset. Noso
teki sodan jälkeen erilaisia hanttitöitä, mutta myös jonkin kitaran. Hän vei tekemänsä kitaran nähtäväksi musiikkikauppaan Helsinkiin, ja sai innostuneen kom-mentin: ”Näitähän pitää tulla pian ja lisää!” Nosolle tuli kiire perustaa oikein suurempi verstasrakennus, ja hän alkoi ammatikseen tehdä soittimia. Hänellä oli hyvä alku ja hyvä nimi, mutta ihan muutaman vuoden päästä hän sai jälkiveroja 250.000 markkaa. Noso valitti liikevaihtoverotoimistoon ja kysyi miksi verot olivat niin suuret. valituksen jälkeen mätkyt tippuivat puo-leen eli 125.000 markkaan.
Noso mietti, olisiko parasta lähetä kokonaan pois suomesta, mutta hänellä oli suunnitelma rakentaa seu-rakunnalle rukoushuone. Ehkä hän voisi vielä yrittää ja maksaa veron tulevaisuudessa? Mutta jouluna, muu-taman kuukauden päästä, tuli uusi jälkivero: 750.000 markkaa. silloin Noso totesi, ettei tästä tule mitään, hänen on lähdettävä pois. Hän oli jo niin epätoivoinen, että laittoi anomuksen päästä siirtolaiseksi Kanadaan. verovirasto myi häneltä pakkohuutokaupalla koneet ja työkalut. sitten Noso ilmoitti verovirastolle, että nyt hän on laittanut työväen pois ja toivoo, että pääsee vapaaksi. Hän tekee töitä yksin, niin ettei hänen tarvit-se maksaa 20 %:n liikevaihtoveroa. verovirastolta tuli myönnytys, ja Noso teki töitä yksin toista vuotta. Yht-äkkiä tuli uusi liikevaihtoveromääräys, yli neljä miljoo-naa! Hänelle ilmoitettiin, että verovirasto oli uudestaan laittanut hänet verovelvolliseksi - ja takautuvasti.
Noso rupesi ajattelemaan poislähtöä ja hänen piti jär-jestää asiansa niin, että pystyi lähtemään pois. viimei-nen neljän miljoonan määräys meni käräjille. Käräjillä tuomari katseli papereita ja ihmetteli, miten vaatimuk-set ovat niin mahdottoman suuret, eikä varoja mitään. Asian annettiin raueta, ei ollut muuta mahdollisuutta. Näin Noso uskalsi alkaa tekemään uutta anomusta Kanadaan. Kun Noso sai luvan lähteä Kanadaan, hän kiireesti valmistautui sitä varten ja lähti. Hän ihmetteli ja ihmettelee edelleen, mitä varten hänen kohdallaan veroasiat menivät niin kuin menivät.

Esko Kajander toivotti kaikki tervetulleeksi ja ottamaan osaa peleihin, joista oli sai hyvät palkinnot. Leena Kelly oli lahjoittanut neljä kirja palkintoa viinipullojen lisäksi. FiNLAND had just survived its life and death struggle of the
Winter War of 1939-1940. in an effort to provide aid to the people of our war-ravaged country an idea was born in sudbury, in the sauna
of Lempi Johnson, to have a Finnish song, sports and co-operative summer festival with the proceeds from it going to Finland. the first festival in 1940 ob-viously was a success since it was repeated six times in sudbury. By this time it was becoming a summer tradition in the Finnish canadian community which continued in timmins in 1946 and then moved to other ontario Finnish communities and Montreal in 1956 when the original purpose for having the festi-vals became obsolete.
A steering committee to guarantee the continuation of these festivals was formed in 1961 in sault ste. Marie, two years after the name of the event was changed to Finnish canadian Grand Festival. As the 1970’s was ap-proaching there appeared signs of weariness among the organizing groups, usually very small in numbers alter-nating between sudbury, toronto, Port Arthur, tim-mins and sault ste. Marie. it was even proposed to have the festival every second year only, but fortunately this did not happen. As a result of this it became apparent than an organization was needed, that would guarantee the continuation of the Grand Festivals. At the same time it became necessary to create a Finnish canad-ian central organization to represent canada’s Finnish community under the new multicultural policy of Pier Elliott trudeau`s Liberal government in 1971.
Mauri Jalava, who had acted as the chairman of the steering committee for three years, had been talking about the necessity of a central organization for many years. An article was also written in vapaa sana, very convincingly, about the same by a bookstore owner named Paavo Lehtonen in Port Arthur. At the Windsor Grand Festival in 1971 foundation of the Finnish can-adian cultural Federation took place and the steering committee ceased to exist. the first chairman of the newly formed organization was Mauri Jalava.
the aim of the cultural Federation was to expand the festivals beyond the boarders of ontario and only two years later vancouver hosted the Finnish canad-ian Grand Festival in 1973. At a special meeting on June 21.1973 the Federation was incorporated to make it a registered federal organization. the objects of the corporation were to act as a non-political co-ordinator between associations, congregations, clubs and other
groups of Finnish ethnic background in canada and to promote Finnish culture and ethnic customs in canada, to promote canada in Finland, to arrange cultural visits, to represent Finnish canadians within other ethnic groups and to actively support the Finnish canadian Grand Festivals.
Full membership with voting rights is open to all canadian non-political organizations, clubs and other groups of Finnish ethnic origin. the present board of directors, at their meeting last october, made a motion to be presented at the annual general meeting here in vancouver to open the membership to individuals also.
in the 1980s the cultural Federation organized and sponsored seminars to promote teaching the Finnish language and keeping up with the constant develop-ment of the language. After three seminars the Finnish language teachers formed an organization of their own in 1984 and took over the responsibility of running these events. there were several similar short seminars including the theatre seminar in 1977 directed by pro-fessor and dramaturg ritva Heikkila from the University of Helsinki and hosted by the cultural Federation and the Finnish social club Actors of toronto. training sessions were also held for activity directors of Finnish clubs, sports associations and youth leaders.
Not to forget its social responsibilities, the cul-tural Federation formed a social committee to study the special needs and issues of the Finnish canadian pensioners. the executive committee initiated the meeting that led into signing of the reciprocal social security Agreement between Finland and canada on February 1, 1988. the basic old age pension from Finland was stopped, but hundreds if not thousands Finnish canadians received a small additional pension in 1980s to 1990s.
the cultural Federation, over the years, has rewarded Finnish groups, choirs, artists and other deserving individuals with a variety of trophies. the first rotating award was a donation from the scandinavian Airlines, a bronze bust of young Jean sibelius sculpted by Kaij tapper and now on display in toronto’s Suomi-Koti.
Jorma sarkijarvi, a long time board member and organizer of Grand Festivals in thunder Bay, with his wife Elma donated a large wooden plaque, which for the first time was awarded in toronto in 1987. the plaque was returned to thunder Bay after it was filled with the nameplates of close to twenty recipients.
A baton, originally belonging to the University of Helsinki student Union male choir and used in their concerts in the 1940s was another cultural Federation
trophy for a male choir deemed to be most deserving by a three member jury. the latest award is a personal keepsake, a plaque donated by vapaa sana Press Ltd. and presented to an individual who has been instru-mental in advancing Finnish cultural activities in his lifetime or has made his or her mark in the field of art in general.
After the Finnish American clubs and associations started to plan their nation-wide annual celebrations in early 1980s under the name of FinnFestUsA, the first one was held in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1983. it did not take long before the organizers on both sides of the border started talking about getting together for a continental Finnish gathering. Mauri Jalava, the first chairman of the Finnish canadian cultural Federation and robert W (Bob) selvala, first chairman of FinnFes-tUsA, sat down, in earnest, at the timmins Grand Festival in 1996 to start planning for the first com-bined event. the idea, proposed by Jalava, was to have the first joint festival – later named FinnGrandFest - at Niagara Falls in order to celebrate the 250th anniver-sary of the Finnish botanist Pehr Kalm`s visit to Ni-agara and also to start the new millennium in a grand style. Niagara Falls, logistically was not feasible, so the festival ended up in toronto with Hans Myrskog, the current chair of the cultural Federation, heading the organizing committee. Unfortunately Bob selvala did not see this magnificent accomplishment. He died of brain cancer 14 weeks before the opening ceremonies of FinnGrandFest 2000.
the joint festival was relived in Marquette, Mich-igan in 2005 and once more in 2010 in sault ste. Marie, ontario with raimo viitala chairing the organ-izing committee.
these are just a few glimpses into the history of the Finnish canadian Grand Festivals and the activities of the Finnish canadian cultural Federation. You may read more in this book written by Lauri toiviainen, once a member of the board of the cultural Federa-tion and a former editor of our Finnish newspaper Vapaa Sana.
We have a very challenging future ahead of us. the first generation is aging and it is getting increasingly difficult to find communities to host the Grand Fes-tivals. ideas have been tossed around what to do and how to do, but no definite solutions have been found as yet. All ideas are welcome and more importantly everyone`s involvement in our future is critical. only together shall we stand strong. only together shall we succeed. — Leena Petäjä

Based on his most famous 1952 novel of the same name by Veikko Huovinen, Kari Väänänen directed this humorous film about the eccentric story teller and backwoods philosopher Konsta Pylkkänen and the time he spent as a guide to two university biologists doing research in
eastern Finland. Konsta Pylkkänen (Kai Lehtinen), is a rascal who lives by his wits and wiles - preferring to spend his time thinking deep thoughts rather than doing heavy labour. These men develop a relationship that transcends differences in geography, class and education. Kari Väänänen has assembled a stellar supporting cast including Kati Outinen, and an excellent cinematographer, Timo Salminen, who makes the most of the glorious rural landscape near Kuhmo.

myself and the republic of Finland, i warmly salute all those taking part in the Finnish-canadian Grand Fest here in Burnaby, British columbia. to organize an event such as this takes an enormous amount of preparation, and this work has been done tirelessly in the spirit of Finnish volunteerism. i cannot but admire the results of all the hard work. During the next three days, we are all fortunate enough to enjoy the fruits of that labor. the festival program is very impressing indeed. i wish to congratulate all those who have had a part in making this event a reality.
Year after year, you, the Finnish-canadians, gather to celebrate your heritage at these annual grand fests. this year the event is held for the 72nd time. Decades have passed since Finns migrated in large numbers to canada, but Finnish cultural heritage is still cherished here with great enthusiasm. it is great indeed to see that you wish to honor and be proud of your past. From Finnish schools to veteran’s associations, and from offices of canadian-Finnish newspapers to fami-lies that cherish the Finnish language; throughout the year in canada, activism with regards to promoting Finnish culture is present in a wide variety of places.
An active network of expatriates favors in many ways the industrial, cultural and political ambitions of Finland. this is in an aspect that one often forgets. And for this activism the state wishes to thank you all. the government of Finland respects Finnish exp-atriates and strives in its dealings to take into account your interests. it is of course clear that the strong cultural identity of the Finnish people living here also makes you active participants in your new native country, canada.

in 2006, Eric Enno Tamm, author of The Horse that Leaps through Clouds retraced the journey of Baron Gustav Mannerheim from st. Petersburg to Peking (now Beijing). Mannerheim was gathering intelligence for the russians on china’s expansion into the border areas and other aspects that would be of interest to the tsar.
it would seem there are similarities between the events of 1906 and those of today. tamm’s account gives an interesting picture of what is currently happening with some of the minority groups in that area.
tamm also draws an interesting parallel to historic events in china around 1906 to present day politics in china. His book is well worth reading.
Sointula, Island Utopia and The Horse that Leaps through Clouds lectures took place at the Finnish Manor. Both Paula Wild and Eric Enno tamm are members of the Writers Union of canada and have won numerous awards for their work.

to benefit you. the goal of the parliament, as well as of the Finnish government, is among other things to make it possible for expatriates to vote by mail. the Finnish parliamentary elections of last spring attracted a great number of people to cast their votes either at the embassy in ottawa or at one of the honorary con-sulates. Were it possible to vote either by letter or in the internet, the number of votes cast by Finnish-ca-nadians would surely rise. Next January you will have a new chance to flock to the polls as Finland elects for itself a new president. the Embassy of Finland st-rives to make it possible for you to vote in advance in a larger number of honorary consulates than has been the case in the past.
Dear Finnish-Canadiansthe Finnish Nationality Act will change on the first
of september, 2011. As the new law enters into force, a former Finnish citizen can get back the citizenship he or she once lost. this will be done through a noti-fication procedure, and citizenship will be granted to an ex-Finn living either abroad or in Finland. in the new law, procedures that relate to a person retaining citizenship at the age of 22 will become clearer. in the future, it will be enough for a person to have applied for a passport between the ages of 18 and 21.

reading books in Kenya, tanzania and Uganda, history inspired him to a new height.
the native city beckoned and in 2006 at U.B.c. Jesse embarked on an academic flight.
University graduation in May 2011 confirmed that Jesse’s intelligence was not light.
With distinguished grades in history Jesse knew, that wisdom had only kindled a light.

Many outdoor clubs have expressed envy for us having this lakeside retreat. Although Heikki loved canada and Bc especially he was always proud of being Finnish and doing things the Finn way with hard work and sisu. it was important to have Finnish club functions like church sunday, annual picnics so members could enjoy each others company and of course Pikku Joulu, a free event for the Finnish community at large so all could join us for a authen-tic Finn christmas experience. it has been because of Heikki’s passion, vision and plain hard work why our club has survived and thrived. He has left quite a legacy and we have big shoes ,no, big boots to fill. the best way to honour him is to continue his vision. thank you Heikki. We will miss you.

Heikki oli reilu suomalainen mies, jonka kanssa oli helppo työskennellä, hänen johtamat kokoukset sujui-vat mutkattomasti, hän oli oikeudenmukainen, rehti ja päättäväinen. opin häneltä paljon. Aina myös löytyi aikaa mukavalle juttutuokiolle, kuten Heikkiä, tulen myös kaipaamaan hänen tarinoitaan.
Kerran mainitsin Heikille pojastani roopesta, joka oli innokas kalamies, ja jota myös metsästys kiinnos-taisi, siihen hän hyvin ‘heikkimäiseen’ tapaan tokaisi: Pane se poika tuleen Paukun ja Koukun kokoukseen, kyllä me se opetetaan. siitä alkoi kiinteä ystävyys vanhemman ja nuoremman miehen välille, olivat jopa facebook kaverit keskenään.
viimeksi tapasin Heikin toukokuussa puutarhamyy-jäisissä scandinavian centerillä, Heikki valitsi ruukul-lisen päivänkakkaroita kainaloonsa, raija vähän yritti estellä, kun sinne pihalle tuskin enää mitään mahtuu, mutta siihen Heikki vain totesi, että kyllä minä nämä otan! Heikki oli tienraivaaja monella eri alueella, näitä teitä meidän jäljessä tulevien on hyvä kulkea, niin suomalaisuuden kuin suuren luonnon parissa.

stories of fishing and hunting always gave me the drive to head out to the wilderness and see what he’s seen. i can only hope that i will have the opportu-nity to pass that same enthusiasm and knowledge to upcoming outdoor enthusiasts. i believe that Heikki brought people together and gave the Finnish cana-dian Fish & Game club a sense of togetherness that will be missed by all. ko, all the performers in the “History of Finnish Pop Music,” and the Kauhava Big Band. i know we missed some others. i also thoroughly enjoyed hearing Ernest Kekkanen’s readings and meeting him.
the scandinavian community centre is beautiful as are the grounds. it was easy for us to find everyt-hing and all the volunteers were so warm and friend-ly. thanks to all of you for your many, many hours of work.
We stayed at the Accent and were pleased with the accommodations as well as the convenience of the restaurant. travel to and from the FinnWest venue was easy either by freeway or side streets.
